  7. OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE OFFIZIELLEN PRESSEMITTEILUNG LIVERPOOL FC & BORUSSIA MG - EINE GANZ BESONDERE FREUNDSCHAFT LIVERPOOL FC & BORUSSIA MG - A VERY SPECIAL FRIENDSHIP 2014 & 8th ANNUAL LIVERPOOL FC SUPPORTERS FRIENDSHIP VISIT TO MOENCHENGLADBACH Friday 2nd May to Monday 5th May 2014 OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE OFFIZIELLEN PRESSEMITTEILUNG A party of Liverpool FC supporters recently returned from Germany after their 8th consecutive annual Friendship visit since 2007 to Moenchengladbach to yet again consolidate and enhance even further a very special friendship that goes back nearly 40 years to the 1970’s decade. Liverpool FC & Borussia Moenchengladbach met in the UEFA Cup final in May 1973, Liverpool winning 3-2 on aggregate and they also met in the1977 European cup final in the eternal city of Rome where Liverpool FC won their first ever of their five European cups, the Reds running out 3-1 winners. The two European giants met again the following season 1977/78 in the semi-final of the European Cup, Liverpool winning 4-2 on aggregate. Since these famous clashes there has been a very special friendship between the two sets of supporters which has resulted in Borussia MG supporters travelling to Liverpool every year since 1992 during the Bundesliga winter break to support the Reds at Anfield, and Liverpool FC supporters led by annual friendship visit organiser Graham Agg, have travelled to Gladbach annually since 2007. In 1991, a delegation of Borussia Moenchengladbach supporters presented a cheque for 21,000 Deutsch Marks (approximately £7000) to ex-LFC captain Ron Yeats for the Hillsborough families, an amazing gesture that has NEVER been forgotten on Merseyside. This year’s LFC supporters Friendship visit to Moenchengladbach took place from Friday 2nd May to Monday 5th May 2014. The trip involved a stadium tour of the impressive 54,000 capacity Borussia Park, Borussia’s new home since 2004, which even has a corporate hospitality suite called the “Liverpool” suite! Also on the agenda was an all day Fan Party and highlight of the visit was guaranteed match tickets to watch Borussia in Bundesliga action versus FSV Mainz 05. LFC supporters were amongst the completely sold out attendance at the Borussia Park stadium to support Borussia in their quest to bring European football back to Moenchengladbach. The Liverpool supporters saw Gladbach secure a 3-1 victory. The LFC supporters were once again invited to an all day fan party in the Borussia official “Fanhaus” situated near the stadium with amazing scenes of friendship between the Borussia & Liverpool supporters. Liverpool supporters this year unveiled a flag in honour of Tom Smith who sadly passed away in February this year. He was a great friend of Liverpool Football Club – and this year’s friendship visit to Gladbach was made in his memory. In 2005, when Liverpool FC won the Champions League in the "Miracle of Istanbul", Liverpool finished fifth in the league table and UEFA declared that LFC would not be allowed to defend their trophy because of their league position. Warrington based Tom Smith, born in Motherwell, Scotland and a member of the Tartan Army & Manchester City season ticket holder of many years standing thought this was an injustice and decided to do something about it. Tom set up immediately an Online petition to lobby UEFA to reverse this decision and in a matter of days the petition had over 100,000 signatures which Tom then forwarded on to Sepp Blatter & UEFA. The rest, as they say is history..... Sadly Tom passed away in February this year at the relatively young age of just 61. This flag was especially commissioned by organiser Graham Agg in his honour and was unveiled in Gladbach as a Scottish Bag Pipe player played "The Flower of Scotland". The 2014 LFC Supporters annual Moenchengladbach Friendship visit was once again fully endorsed by Liverpool Football Club. For the 8th consecutive year, LFC presented the organiser of the friendship visit with a gift before departure to Germany. The gift of a framed letter with the LFC club crest with a special message from Liverpool FC Managing Director Ian Ayre. This was read out to the assembled audience on Friday evening by Graham Agg. In the message, Ian Ayre stated how unique this special friendship is, and thanked the Borussia supporters for their recent gift of over 250 scarves for the 25th anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster. He also wished the LFC supporters a successful 8th annual friendship visit. Special guest Chris Shaw – author of the Liverpool FC book “Our Liverpool” about Liverpool FC’s worldwide support (published in 2010), also addressed the audience and he spoke of the importance of the LFC/BMG friendship. Also Thomas Jonny Polcher from the official BMG Fan Projekt spoke about the special friendship which is unique in world football. This year, 78 Liverpool FC supporters made the trek to Moenchengladbach, the vast majority from the Merseyside region but also LFC fans from all parts of the UK. Ireland was represented this year by the Donegal Branch (Irish Reds) of the official LFC supporters Club(AIB), there was also a group of German Reds from different parts of Germany, also 9 members of the Holland official LFC supporters Club(Alsin). Belgium was also represented on the friendship visit. Organiser Agg stated that he wishes “to thank Jonny Thomas Polcher & Thomas "Tower" Weinmann from the BMG Fan Projekt for their help in organising the friendship visit, also the fans of Borussia Moenchengladbach & the citizens of the town of Moenchengladbach for their unbelievable hospitality and friendship shown to the Liverpool fans during their stay” and he also stated that he would like “to thank all the travelling Liverpool FC supporters for being superb ambassadors for Liverpool Football Club and the City of Liverpool, and that this weekend has proven yet again that the Borussia Moenchengladbach & Liverpool FC friendship is absolutely unique in world football”.

  12. What's funny here is, there are people backing Rodgers to the hilt and yet were calling for Rafa & Kenny to be sacked. Rafa, a world class manager who took us to two Champions league finals, 2nd in the league, won the FA Cup, European Super cup, etc. Kenny a Liverpool FC legend, five times League winner as manager (LFC & Blackburn)who after 10 years out of the game, in his first full season back, won at Arsenal, Chelsea and were the only team to beat City at the Etihad and yet Rodgers can't even muster a single solitary victory versus any top club this season, was sacked by that European giant READING and is clearly out of his depth in the hot seat at Anfield. Yes, he talks a good game and knows the great history of the club....so do I, but I am not qualified to manage a european giant, alas now in name only, like Liverpool Football Club. He never had the CV or experience to become an LFC manager. Things will not improve until Rodgers is shown the door and we get a world class manager at the helm. Alas, with the penny pinching current owners of LFC, that is pie in the sky. Rodgers earns a reputed £1.7M a year, a great salary compared to the man in the street, however, in the world of present day football, £1.7M gets you a manager of the standing of.....BRENDAN RODGERS. if you want a top top manager you have to pay the going rate, £5M per year or even more. Even an average manager like Moyes earns a reputed £4M a year for Christs sake! I fear under the current ownership of LFC (Messrs Henry & Werner) and their strict financial controls ....we are a club on the road to nowhere.......

  18. It appears Tony Evans from THE TIMES has the same opinion as myself, please read Tony Evan's article below: Liverpool's lack of firepower is a cock-up by committee TONY EVANS, FOOTBALL EDITOR It is now a week since the great Liverpool deadline day fiasco. Yet again, infighting and absurdity reign in L4. Take down ‘This is Anfield.’ Replace with ‘This is chaos.’ The worst thing is that it was so easily avoidable. Until January, Brendan Rodgers will have to cope with only two seasoned strikers, Luis Suarez and Fabio Borini. Neither looks like a 20-goals-a-season man. Andy Carroll was sent to West Ham United with the belief that Clint Dempsey would sign. It didn’t happen so Liverpool are very light up front. Unless, that is, a free agent can be found. The names that have been bandied round make Dempsey, at 29, look like a whippersnapper. Michael Owen, Emile Heskey and Alessandro Del Piero were all suggested as stopgaps. That they struggled to find clubs was for a reason. The angst at Anfield was mirrored by mirth elsewhere. Most of the supporters’ anger has been aimed at Fenway Sports Group. There is a presumption that the American owners did not want to spend money, leaving Rodgers short of manpower and firepower. The sad truth is different. Even FSG’s fiercest critics can seethat it was not simply a money problem. Liverpool entered September with unspent cash in the transfer kitty. It will be a long four months before that war chest can be invested in players. How did this happen? Who is to blame? It is hard to point the finger at an individual. This was cock-up by committee. Once Rodgers was appointed in early summer, it was always going to be a window of transition. Dirk Kuyt, Maxi Rodriguez and Craig Bellamy all left the club, their fading talents making it sensible to move them on. But with them left goals. It was crucial to add more. Rodgers, like all managers, wanted to reshape the squad in his own image. It is only right that he feels that way. He will take responsibility for results and should build around players he trusts. Even so, it was a big mistake to signal to the rest of football that Andy Carroll was surplus to requirements. Across the game, Liverpool have developed a reputation for buying high, selling low and overpaying players. It predates FSG and is one of the big issues they need to address. Yet everyone knew the £35-million striker had no value to his new manager. It did not place the club in a position of strength in a marketplace where any sign of weakness will cost you millions. There were others that Rodgers did not want: Charlie Adam, Jordan Henderson and Joe Cole among them. It’s hard to blame him. Adam and Henderson, along with Stewart Downing, were last summer’s signings. Their main contribution was helping to get Kenny Dalglish the sack. Cole was bought by an overexcited and inexperienced executive during the tail end of the Gillett and Hicks era and is likely to cost the club more than £25 million over the four years of his contract. It would be easier for a huckster to sell the Brooklyn Bridge than to shift Cole. FSG have struggled to come to terms with football – as John W. Henry, the principal owner, admitted to fans in his letter this week. Yet FSG have always had a clear vision about what sort of business they would like to do in the transfer market. They are keen on young players with potential resale value. This clarity of thought from Boston has been obscured by poor choices in employing the men to implement it. Damien Comolli overpaid for even the young players he bought. Eventually he was found out. But FSG believes it was the person, rather than the policy, that was flawed. It’s hard to disagree. The owners were less keen on Dempsey than the manager. They struggled to accept that the only significant goalscoring target of the summer was the Fulham man. There must be, they believed, younger strikers out there with potential to grow. They also knew that Carroll could not be allowed to leave before he was replaced by at least one forward. Rodgers and Ian Ayre, the managing director, were expressly told that this situation should not happen. Which makes the last-week meltdown even more shocking. Rodgers looked to have won his battle when a deal was agreed with Fulham for Dempsey with Henderson going the other way. It would have been against everything that "Moneyball" logic stands for – an £18 million youngster traded for an ageing striker - but it was sanctioned. It fell apart when Henderson refused to go to London. Then everything collapsed. It looked like Daniel Sturridge was heading for Anfield on an initial loan with a clause to buy after a season. It was a bigger financial commitment than the Dempsey deal. As the transfer neared completion, Carroll went to West Ham. Then, at the last moment, Rodgers vetoed the move. One day was left in the window. Dempsey appeared to be the only option. Unfortunately, Tottenham Hotspur made a bigger bid and Liverpool were left with egg on their face. The owners were even more flabbergasted when Rodgers was quoted as saying that the Carroll deal was “99.9 per cent finance”. It looked like Boston had forced the loan through. The fanbase went into uproar. Rodgers, like all managers, was desperate to get his man. However, he was clearly working to a different agenda to FSG. This is the biggest worry for Liverpool in the future. The lines of communication failed. Which brings everything back to FSG’s biggest mistake. The owners cannot run the club – never mind a transfer window – from Boston. The need for strong leadership at Anfield is shown more starkly with every crisis that occurs. Ayre is not chief executive material. As football administrators go, he is a pygmy, even in an area that has few giants. He should have been the bridge between owners and manager. So why did everyone drown last week? Henry’s response was the letter. The things that stood out from it were the acceptance that FSG have made mistakes in their two years of ownership and the emphasis on the long-term health of the club. Football is a tough business. Lots of things about it do not make sense – especially to someone with a background in American sport. The game here can be ugly and it encourages dishonesty and duplicity. In the States, there are entirely different ethical problems for owners but dealings are much more transparent. FSG have not been hands-on enough. They know that. They need a greater presence on Merseyside, or employ someone they trust to make the ownership work properly. There are signs that they recognise this. Tom Werner, the chairman, was at the Premier League meeting yesterday and is one of the driving forces in trying to bring an extra level of Financial Fair Play to the top flight. Werner has allies in Manchester United and Arsenal – in matters of football politics, it is better to be on the same side as United than against them, as the Suarez incident showed. Werner’s involvement - and he was forthright in exchanges with clubs like Manchester City, who are against wide-ranging regulation - backed up Henry’s assertion in his letter that FSG are at Anfield for the long run. Rumours have circulated that the Americans are looking for a buyer for Liverpool and that the cost-cutting of the summer was trimming the fat for a sale. There is no evidence for this and Henry, in particular, is desperate to make a success of the club. If that is to happen, the disconnect between owners and manager needs to be fixed – and quickly. Rodgers is FSG’s appointment and they will back him to the hilt. However, even more than cash, the manager needs someone in the boardroom with the ability to convince Boston to go with his judgement. Equally, Anfield needs someone with the status to say no to the manager when Rodgers wants too much. Henry knows this. They need to find the right man. Yesterday. Anfield has drifted for too long. Henry and FSG are not going anywhere. They will only spend in a manner they believe to be wise and this is no bad thing. The letter, quite rightly, claimed the club is healthier now than when they arrived. They will be prudent. The manager had better get used to it, the fans too. They won’t be pumping huge amounts of cash in but, unlike Hicks and Gillett or the Glazers, they will not take massive amounts out. They should be held to account for their mistakes but last week was about wider issues. The learning phase is over. The next months require action and progression. With strong leadership, comedy and chaos will be a thing of the past. It is time for action and for Henry to prove the letter was not just words. ---------------------------------
  19. It is patently obvious after listening to various interviews that the dealings of bringing in new players is done by committee at Liverpool FC. Therefore we have the absurd situation of a bunch of people deciding on which players are bought, first of all chosen by the manager but then being decided by committee whether it is appropiate. Not since the pre-Shankly days of 1959 have Liverpool Football Club been run in this idiotic chaotic manner. It is for the manager, and ONLY the manager to decide who comes in to the club because the manager is the MOST important person at any football club. It is time for the Fenway Sports Group to do the honourable thing and release their ownership of Liverpool Football Club as they have been shown as both incompetent and inept in their dealings in English professional football and the mismanagement of Liverpool FC is there for all to witness. Enough to make you weep............... .......
  20. The LFC heirarchy of Henry, Werner & Ayre should hang their heads in shame for leaving LFC manager Brendan Rodgers in the lurch. The fact that a small club like QPR can bring in 11 (ELEVEN) new players during the January transfer window and 5 times European Champions LFC, desperate for a goalscorer after releasing Andy Carroll the day before the transfer window closes, refuse to pay just £6M to Fulham for Clint Dempsey is nothing more than incompetence of the highest order. Rodgers stated just a few days ago he expected two players to come in on the last day and is left to look stupid by the incompetence and mismanagement from LFC managing director Ian Ayre, who makes much criticised ex-Chief executive Rick Parry look like a genius in comparison in transfer dealings. Where has the TV money gone? The worldwide LFC support have a right to answers to these questions? I look forward to your explanation Mr Ayre. If Messrs Henry & Werner do not have the necessary funds they should sell up to someone who has. A total shambles.
  21. Thank the lord he never re-signed for Liverpool FC. Feel desperately sorry for the long suffering Stoke City supporters having to suffer the dour personality of this overpaid prima donna 33 year old hasbeen mercenary more interested in money & his race horses than football. Not sure? Just ask any Liverpool, Newcastle & Real Madrid supporters who were all glad to see the back of the self interested arrogant character more obsessed with money than his football profession. I'll give him four weeks and he'll be injured again. A complete & utter waste of space..............

  24. It's clear for everyone to see, not just on this website, but also on numerous LFC website polls, Rafael Benitez is the "People's Choice" to be the next manager of Liverpool Football Club. Let's see who the LFC heirarchy choose. Although with the decision coming from "astute" footballing brains like Ayre, Werner & Henry - who are we, the average punter in the streeet to argue with their decision?!!!!!!!!!!!! You couldn't make it up................:wallbutt:
