My first thought was is this motivation by fear. Having thought a bit more I suppose those players who know it'll probably be their last chance to pull on the red shirt will want to go out in a blaze of glory. A related quick question: do people think Chelsea still have the financial clout to prevent Rafa signing his first choices? I get the impression they are interested in Alves and Tevez.

Given that we need a much better start to next season I just don't see us risking a substantial part of whatever transfer kitty is available on someone who will need a season to adapt to the pace of the English game. I know Morientes wasn't that expensive, but I honestly thought he was going to be a fantastic player for us, and I guess many Chelsea fans have been disappointed by Shevchenko. The fact that Tevez has played in the premiership and has performed well makes him a far safer buy, even at £20 milllion, than, say, Villa or Eto'o. Can I also make it clear that I do not want Owen back - I can't see how a player with any integrity would even consider leaving Newcastle under the circumstances. However, I do like puppy dogs, Luis Garcia, and Christmas, which just goes to show you shouldn't believe everything you read on forums.

Ballack has always looked a bit shaky to me.
