In that case, you don't need a deep lying playmaker also shielding the defence when you've got a destroyer like Mascherano. That style also requires a defence that plays much higher up the pitch and some of Alonso's range of passing would be pointless. It's probably also why we will see Carra rotated out more, i.e. a requirement for the entire defensive line to be more mibile and the CBs to have a little pace. Is that footballing enough for you?
