  1. I wouldn't have called it an Aussie pitch either. Lord's was a low, slow track designed to nullify the pace and bounce of the Aussie bowlers and supposedly level the playing field between the bowling units. (They deny this, but that's obviously bullshit. We were trying to take the sting out of Starc and Johnson.) It backfired because they just pitched it right up to keep pace on the ball through the air, while we bowled idiotic half-trackers and good-length balls that the Aussies gobbled up like blobs of vegemite when they came onto the bat at around 70mph. It was a combination of good batting, poor bowling, and one of the dumbest pitch requests ever made. Overall, Harris' absence turned out to be huge. I thought it wouldn't be, but hell was I ever wrong. There was no control in the Aussie attack, no one who could create the conditions for their strike bowlers to come in and be effective, wanging them down in little 3-4 over bursts. They couldn't constrain the batsmen, and the strike bowlers had to keep running in to try to make something happen. I mean, look at some of the run-rates we achieved -- us, fucking England! When the Starcs and the Johnsons of the world are doing the grunt work of a bowling unit, you know you're in a bad place. When you look back at a series and say to yourself, "If only we'd started Peter Siddle", you know something's gone badly wrong. But they should have done.
  2. I've just had a look at the table, and saw we're tenth. Fucking tenth! Well below par. Sack him now and get it over with.
  3. No. You must be either grief-stricken or outraged. It's the British way.
  4. What a fucking player Joe Root is becoming. He's obviously brilliant already, but I still say becoming because you can't help feeling there's more to come.
  5. 50 off a boundary he missed hitting by about the width of two bats! Still, well played. Made up for him. He did everything possible to earn his chance, and he's taking it.
  6. Yeah certainly mate. It comes from a variety of places, the most thorough source tends to come from publications of charities working with the issue although good journalism like Champ mentioned can corroborate the evidence. I'm tapping on my phone in the park right now, buy I'll try to sort you some good sources when I get back.
  7. Couple of points to consider... The reason you see mostly young men in this position is because most families in troubled areas consider the migrant journey too dangerous for women and young girls. Families will pool their resources to pay smuggling gangs to get a young man on his way, in the hope that their son/brother/etc will make it to somewhere better, get settled and either send money back to the family or bring them out after him. The main reason people want to come from France to Britain before making asylum claims is because they've been sold a lie, a fantasy really, about what will happen when they get here. The gangs smuggling people into and around Europe tell their victims that when they get to Britain they'll be handed a nice house, a whack of money, a job, etc., just for turning up in the UK. It's hardly a coincidence they make this story up about Britain -- it's the farthest place on the continent from the migrants' point of entry, so smugglers can keep extorting vulnerable people all the way across. The reality is that the provisions for refugees and asylum seekers are almost identical in France and Britain, and in some cases they're actually better in France, but people who've made the journey are too desperate by this point not to believe what they've been told, so they try to fight their way into the UK by any means possible. Just a bit of context.
  8. 110 deliveries to Nevill, and the number of times he's played and just missed the outside edge without nicking it...
  9. How many times has Finn beat Neville's outside edge?? He's faced eighteen balls, I think about half of them have gone past his bat from Finn. Beautiful, beautiful bowling.
  10. I said before the match this could be a big couple of days for Finns Test career. Not doing to badly with the chance...
