Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Liverpool FC preview, team news, tickets & prediction

The Molineux will be the stage that hosts Wolverhampton Wanderers match against Liverpool on matchweek 5 of the new 2023/24 Premier League season.

Both teams will look to start the stretch of games before the next international break on a good note and keep their season trajectory on the uptrend they feel they deserve.

Wolverhampton Wanderers will not be very appreciative of the start to the season they have gotten off to and it is a further indication of why it is never good to have backroom drama to start the season.

With only a few weeks before the start of the season, Julen Lopeteui left his position as manager of the club and Gary O’Neil was brought in. Speaking at the start of the season about squad preparation, he said:

“Not nervous. It is not ideal to come in three or four days before the first Premier League game. The group have been working in a certain way under different leadership for the last six weeks and we have a game coming in three or four days against a very good side.

“So, not loads of time to get them exactly where I would want to be. (I am) just trying to assess exactly where they are and what it feels like at this moment. Then obviously as time goes on and we progress, I am very confident we can get the group to where we need them.”

They will need a swift turnaround in fortunes and a win against Liverpool will provide one of those. The visitors on the other hand are looking to continue building positive momentum. The Reds cannot stop in their pursuit to get back to the top of the League and a revenge win against a side that humiliated them last season will be a positive step in the right direction.

After the comeback win against Newcastle, Jurgen Klopp revealed the things that were the keys to their success in that game and maybe the keys to success in the games to come this season.

“We don’t concede, stay calm, defend with passion, play with an idea, and we have a chance to get a point here.”

It is a simple enough quote but Liverpool didn't show enough of the passion Klopp mentioned last season. Now they have to prove their credentials with better performances and Wolves gives them that opportunity.

With tricky matches against West Ham, Brighton and Tottenham after that, another three points are important for building confidence before those major challenges come.

Team news

Wolves do have some injuries but they are far from being in an injury crisis. Currently sidelined through injury are striker Hwang Hee-Chan and central defender Santiago Bueno. Both players have hamstring injuries.

It has been a summer of massive squad turnaround for Wolves with some of their key players like Matheus Nunes, Ruben Neves, Raul Jimenez, Adama Traore and iconic club captain Conor Coady going out the exit door this summer.

Matheus Cunha, Santiago Bueno, Enso Gonzalez, Boubacar Traore and most recently, Tommy Doyle and Jean-Rincer Bellegrade arrived. It remains to be seen whether these players will be worthy replacements for the talents that left the club but the club will be happy they were able to replace the talent they lost.

Liverpool and its fans can be happy with their current injury status as they have a clean bill of health. It was a summer window that indicated the change of the old guard somewhat with Roberto Firmino, Fabinho, Champions League winning captain Jordan Henderson, Naby Keita and James Milner leaving.

Out with the old and in with the new. Liverpool brought in Dominik Szoboszlai, Alexis Mac Allister, Wataru Endo and most recently Ryan Gravenberch. They have reduced the average age of the squad and bought quality replacements in crucial positions.

Lineups

Wolves will be looking for a good home result against their opponents and they will try to play a team that would be solid defensively as well as strong in the attack.

Wolves: Sa, Killman, Dawson, Semedo; Aiit Nouri, Lemina, Bellegrade, Neto; Podence, Cunha, Silva.

Liverpool will have a variety of options to choose from on their team and Ryan Gravenberch will be in contention to start.

Liverpool: Allison; Alexander-Arnold, Matip, Gomez, Robertson; Mac Allister, Szoboszlai, Jones; Salah, Nunez; Diaz.

Prediction

Liverpool will travel to the Molineux with a massive chip on their shoulders and revenge on their minds. The 3-0 humiliation at the hands of this team last season was one of the many embarrassing results they suffered last season.

A big win for the reds this season will help prove that last season is a thing of the past. Wolves on the other hand will try as much as they can to come away with a positive result. It will be a very hard fixture but a win against this team may kick their season into high gear.
