Lucas, Kolo Toure & 'Tighter' Liverpool must beat Sunderland (ESPN article)

by Dave Usher for ESPN

Liverpool have bounced back well from an awful performance and defeat at Selhurst Park two weeks ago by securing two Premier League victories as well as an important draw that kept their Europe hopes alive. They still have a long way to go before they can feel good about themselves again but at least they appear to have stopped the rot and are moving in the right direction again. Saturday's home game with Sunderland gives them a great opportunity to take another small step forward on the road to recovery.

The midweek win over Leicester was far from convincing and owed much to a nightmare display from unfortunate Leicester captain Wes Morgan, who laid on Liverpool's opening two goals before getting himself sent off. Liverpool then struggled against the ten men -- perhaps unsurprisingly given they were now lacking the creativity of Morgan -- but eventually killed the game off and in doing so moved back up to the dizzy heights of eighth place.

For Brendan Rodgers and his players it's all about picking up points at the moment. How they do it isn't important; they just need to stay within touching distance of the top four and hope their form eventually improves to make a concerted run at a European place.

In both of Rodgers' previous seasons at Anfield his side came on strong in the second half of the year and he will obviously be hoping that trend continues. Last year it almost took Liverpool to the title but in his first season the Reds were so far off the pace by January that even a good run in the new year was not enough to get them into the Champions League places. That has to be the big fear this time too, so it's vital that they dig in and continue to grind out results as they have done in the past week.
