How have Liverpool fared? What you should know!

After a not-so-Jurgen-like opening weeks in the Premier League, Liverpool are looking to settle in the next few games with the youngsters gearing up to deliver for the side. A rather average transfer window meant that Liverpool didn't have the expected squad depth they had over the last few seasons.

But the intentions haven't changed - they are here to bring back the Premier League. After losing the Premier League to City on the final match day, Liverpool want to set things right this year. They were also unfortunate in the UEFA Champions League final, with the side losing to Real Madrid.

So how do Liverpool approach this season? Here's what the Reds have been doing and what they need to fix if they want to challenge City for the Premier League title.

Youngsters delivering for the Reds

Faith is on the youngsters as Jurgen Klopp is now entrusting critical roles to the development players. Fabio Carvalho, who celebrated his 20th birthday recently, was in the headlines as he brought in a late winner against Newcastle United.

Carvalho, who came from Fulham, was an instant Liverpool wildcard and made an impact every time he had the ball. It was wholesome content for everyone present with Liverpool tickets to watch as the Reds' recorded a late comeback to win 2-1.

The aftermath of the win saw heated movements in the stands and the technical area where the angst had been building all night, with Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp in a state of almost permanent fury over how the visitors played.

The fans were ecstatic when Carvalho scored via the bar, leaving Newcastle United devastated. The goal in the dying seconds left the visitors helpless with nothing left to do.

While Liverpool's world-class talents such as Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk are always highlighted, the game against Newcastle saw two young Fulham acquisitions providing the future signposts.

Alongside Carvalho was Harvey Elliott, the 19-year-old who was having the best day. Fans who purchased Liverpool tickets and players were frustrated seeing Newcastle United wasting time to push for a draw. It got to the players, and Newcastle looked like they were in control.

But nothing of this touched Elliott, the side's stand-out performer, covering the ground with ease and demanding the ball on every given occasion. He was seen shrugging off any challenge posed to him by Newcastle quite easily.

Elliott's progress was cut short by a severe injury sustained at Leeds United last season. It is now clear that Klopp has faith in these two youngsters and is demanding their positions in the midfield from the established players.

Liverpool scrambled over the line, but for Klopp and his players it will give them satisfaction seeing that it was his young brigade who pulled his team to victory.

Darwin Nunez and Salah have yet to click!

Liverpool are currently paying the price for letting go of Sadio Mane as their star striker Mo Salah is yet to click with new signing Darwin Nunez.

When Sadio Mane left for Bayern Munich, the Salah-Mane duo had more than 20 goals each per season, and it was Premier League's most productive strike partnership.

Mané and Mohamed Salah were a constant for the previous five seasons in Jürgen Klopp's team. At least one featured in every Premier League game since Salah signed until the Africa Cup of Nations was shifted to be played mid-campaign earlier this year.

The pair saw 22 Premier League assists for each other during the last season, bettered only by Harry Kane and Heung-min Son from Spurs. The Mane-Salah partnership was what drove Liverpool to the levels that we see them today.

Mane's replacement, Darwin Nunez, came to Liverpool from Benfica for £64m but has yet to make a statement for himself. He will need to build a formidable understanding with Mo Salah to take his team back to the goal-scoring rhythm to make it back to the top of the table.

The Uruguay international striker pointed to the areas where he wanted the ball passed. When his teammates got him behind Everton's backline, he forced Jordan Pickford to tip onto the woodwork. There could be comparisons with Mané with his work rate, as Klopp's new signing found himself in the left-back position on a couple of occasions when he got involved in tussles for possession.

But there will need to be an understanding with Salah for Liverpool's season to kick start. They were too far from each other to combine regularly, and that will surely come in time as Nunez learns the ways of his new team. After Núñez was substituted, Salah was involved in a flurry of late chances for Liverpool to snatch victory.

Liverpool missed out on a midfielder

Jurgen Klopp revealed that they attempted to sign a midfielder during the summer window but lost the race to another club. The German confirmed that the Reds were looking to bring in a new midfielder before Thursday's deadline but could not finalise the deal.

The side's main target was Aurelien Tchouameni, who has since joined Real Madrid for a fee that could rise to €90m. Speaking to the media, Klopp alluded to this failed deal.

"We were going for a midfielder, but that midfielder decided to sign up for another club. These things happen," he said.

"Some players are right now not available for us is interesting. That's how it is," he added.

Klopp believes Liverpool will need to spend more money in the following transfer windows and is open to taking risks. Liverpool is one of the most economical spenders in the league, spending just €90.3m. In contrast, Chelsea spent €281.99m, and Manchester City spent €139.5m this summer window.
