Transfer watch: Five targets for Jurgen Klopp this summer

After a few near misses in recent years, Liverpool are on the verge of securing their spot in next season’s Champions League. Jurgen Klopp’s men are currently third in the table, five points clear of fifth place and in control of their own destiny.

If Liverpool are to continue building and competing against some of the strongest teams on the planet next year, they must invest heavily this summer. With that in mind, here are five potential transfer targets for Klopp ahead of the 2017/18 campaign.

Ryan Sessegnon

At 16 years old, Sessegnon probably isn’t the man to take Liverpool to the next level but his potential and upside has no boundaries. You only need to look at his highlights reel to see just how talented he is, and his ability to pop up with a crucial goal (he's had seven goals in 27 appearances) is handy.

The Fulham star has been sublime for the most part of the current campaign and Klopp would get the most out of his talent. Left-back has to be an area of priority for the Reds this summer; Sessegnon certainly fits the bill in terms of a long-term option at the position...

Kasper Schmeichel

The Leicester City shot-stopper is one of the best goalkeepers in England’s top flight and it wouldn’t be a huge surprise to see Liverpool move for his signature before the end of the summer. He hasn't received as much media attention this year but he remains a supreme talent.

Simon Mignolet has failed to inspire confidence again this year and Schmeichel, son of Manchester United legend Peter, would be an excellent addition to a squad in dire need of consistency between the goalposts.

Kieran Tierney

Another young star; another left back. Celtic's 19-year-old Kieran Tierney has been a revelation this campaign, playing a key role in their title triumph.

With a bit of luck, he might even end the season as a treble winner – the Bhoys are priced at 3/4 in bet365's football betting odds to beat Aberdeen in the Scottish FA Cup at the end of the month. The Young Player of the Year in Scotland’s top flight looks the part and he would be a fantastic asset; his arrival would go down a treat with Reds fans.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain

If Arsenal miss out on the top four this season, Gunners fans should expect a mass exodus at the Emirates Stadium before the end of August. The England international is still young at just 23 years old and he has yet to extend his contract in north London.

With that in mind, the Reds could push for a transfer, although it may end up being costly. Oxlade-Chamberlain is a real asset and his influence in midfield could give Liverpool the edge next season.

Alexandre Lacazette

The Lyon striker has followed up his superb 2015/16 campaign with another incredible year of scoring. In 41 appearances, Lacazette has scored 30 goals – an amazing feat. On paper, it is hard to knock Lacazette.

Some have criticised him in the media, claiming that scoring on a regular basis in the French top flight isn’t overly difficult but it is time to take Lacazette seriously. Given the chance to prove his worth on the big stage, the 25-year-old can show that he is the real deal.
