  1. Is it just me who thinks he's just one big myth. It's just the fact he's been at United for years that has made this false opinion of him develop. Don't get me wrong though I think he's been a good player. To last at United that long is testament to what Ferguson thinks of him and to reinvent himself as a deep lying midfielder. That's exactly what he has done though - reinvented himself. For the large part of his career he was United's midfielder who broke into the box and scored goals. He was technically brilliant at volleying and shooting. His movement in and around the box was as good as anyone. He was even played up front for a time. However, United were never built around their centre midfield. Apart from Roy Keane they have literally went from mediocre midfielder to mediocre midfielder. It has appeared to have never bothered Ferguson. They have always had the best wingers and forwards in the league and have always paid the big money for them. Combining this with having a pretty solid defence with full backs who get forward and you have what United are made of. As Scholes got older and stopped scoring as many goals he became more and more useless. In the past few seasons he got redeployed as their deep lying centre mid. Defensively he is shite and always has been. This is not some myth and is pretty much accepted by everyone. He has never been blessed with any pace and I don't think I have ever witnessed him dribble past a player in his career. With the Mancs rivalry with us and the fact they have witnessed the career of the most complete centre midfielder in English football history in Gerrard it seems to have developed a need for them to have a comparison. They haven't got one. They have had the better side now for decades but that doesn't mean individually all their players are brilliant or better than some of the best players for other clubs. Even in his new role I don't think he excelled. I seen numerous hollywood balls he hit go straight in the stands. Gerrard is so often criticised for attempting these yet doesn't try them half as much as Scholes and is easily more successful at them. He never dictates games because he doesn't have to. All their play is down to having fast skillful wingers. The myth that he has been some great centre mid over the years is laughable.
  2. Chris Bascombe is to become the new merseyside footie reporter for the telegraph. The move see Rory Smith moving to cover the midlands instead. Here Chris Bascombe, one of the sports desk casualties of the sudden closure of the News of the World, is in line to become Merseyside football reporter for the Daily Telegraph, with incumbent Rory Smith earmarked for a switch to the Midlands. Self-confessed Liverpool fan Bascombe joined the NotW four years ago from the Liverpool Echo, where he had been named north-west sportswriter of the year for five successive years. He also ghost-wrote Jamie Carragher’s autobiography.
  3. I've been a long time lurker on this forum and thoroughly enjoy the banter around here. However, now is the time to experience it live, so me and some of my friends want to visit Liverpool and watch a home game and perhaps one or two other PL fixtures if they can be squeezed in. One of my friends is a bluenose and would like to see Everton as well (I have no problem with that as I have sympathy for them too). I thought asking you guys here at TLW would be a clever thing to do, as many of you are locals or out of towners who visits Merseyside often. So here are some questions some of you may be able to answers: 1: Hotels - which ones are recommended? Luxury is not needed. We are here to enjoy the area, not the hotel. 2: If we were to see another game or too in the same week, or weekend, which areas would be the easiest to travel to? E.g. Liverpool at home, perhaps Blackburn away or something? 3: Do you recommend car, bus or train? 4: Regarding tickets, I'd prefer tickets to the Centenary Stand or Main Stand, how is the best way of obtaining them? 5: Anything else I should know?
  4. Obviously fucking rubbish. On in the background now. Johnson from Peepshow must have been based on John Amaechi.
  5. I've been doing a bit of research into some of Rafa's signings, particularly in the early days and trying to see how much cash we got from sales. So far I've found: Sebastian Leto - £5m Panathaniakos Mark Gonzales - £5m Real Betis Mikel San Jose -£3.5m (I think) Krisztian Nemeth - £1m Olympiakos (+sell on fee!) Can you think of any other bits of business by Rafa that bought in a few bob that have been forgotten about? I was amused to see Utd let Rossi go for £6.5m. Still I won't be laughing if they have a sell on fee!
