Gabrielle Marcotti spitting feathers on Twitter because loads of people said they voted for Xabi Alonso in the Balon D'Or but actually meant to vote for Xavi. Columbia's captain, Mario Yepes, insists he voted for Xavi but his vote is down as Xabi. Fucking brilliant. But, anyway, really interesting read to see which people voted for who in the awards. http://karllusbec.files.wordpress.com/2011/01/ballondor_award_men_player_finalx.pdf As wonderful as Messi was, I think Xavi was the heart of the two best teams in 2010, whereas Messi was only in one. For that, I would have voted for Xavi.

This Berbatov dive has really got on my tits. Not just the fact that it cost us the game, but also the response to it in the press. To me it is very simple, Agger touched Berbatov. Berbatov knew it was coming and fell over. The contact Agger made was in no way related to Berbatov falling over. Now, this is not drawing a foul, this is creating a foul. A very real difference. I have seen Agger being criticised for his "challenge" but it really wasn't even a challenge. It wasn't a Skrtel lunge, he merely moved somewhere near Berbatov. The coverage of this is getting worse though. Take the Guardian for example, in the match report they said: There was a pause? Since when has gently brushing against someone become an offence on a football pitch? On the tube, yes, but not in football. Then, in Fergie's lapdog Daniel Taylor's player ratings: Took advantage of the briefest of touches? Now, you could argue that he is being ironic here, but I just don't read it like that. Anyway, the more this sort of behaviour is indulged then the more we risk football becoming a non-contact sport.
