    Roma fans: 'Anfield security embarrassing'

Some Roma fans who attended the Champions League semi-final against Liverpool claimed the policing was “embarrassing” and they “feared being killed.”

A 53-year-old Liverpool fan was left in an induced coma after an attack by two Roma ultras, members of the notorious Fedayn group, who have been remanded in custody.

Rome-based Il Tempo newspaper gathered statements from various other Giallorossi supporters who made the trip to Anfield for the game and found the approach to security very different to what they were accustomed.

“I’ll never go to an away game in England again, because it’s not worth it if I have to fear being killed,” said Francesco.

“We had to club together in a sort of march towards the nearest taxi rank and the six or seven police officers accompanying us made us walk past the pubs frequented by our rivals.

“At the crossing with Everton Valley, five or six Reds fans jumped out and threw rocks and bottles at us. A couple of ours tried to defend themselves, but rather than block them, the police charged us.

“I found myself crushed up against a wall and thought ‘I’m either getting arrested or killed here.’ Then reinforcements arrived and in the end they took us up to the World Museum, 4.5km from Anfield Road.”

Giulio’s problems occurred even before the semi-final, as he claimed “all the taxis refused to take us on board” to reach the stadium.

“Once we got there, we found no police at all, just a couple of stewards. To reach the away section, we necessarily had to go under the Kop, so right in the middle of their fans. It was an incredible crush, there were a thousand of us in one little corner.”

Another fan, named Luca, said that at the entrance he “saw a supporter with blood coming down his face after a clash with other fans. It was just chaos and the security measures were bland at best. Contact between the sets of fans was inevitable.”

The Stadio Olimpico has two levels of security checks before anyone can enter the arena.

“The security checks in Liverpool were embarrassing,” Antonio was quoted as saying in the newspaper.

“There’s no filtering system, people with backpacks went in without anyone checking the contents, even the frisking was perfunctory. Compared to other stadiums in Europe, it’s all very relaxed – too relaxed, unfortunately.”

Stefano claimed he was “charged by police on horseback after accidentally going down the wrong road.”

A supporter called Marco felt trouble was inevitable with the lack of police presence in the city.

“During the day in the streets of Liverpool, I didn’t see a single policeman, which is crazy when the game is so high-risk. A friend of mine was punched and kicked, he ran off and asked a policeman to intervene, but was told to ‘go away.’

“So he got in a taxi, gave the driver £50 and convinced him to take him away from that hell-hole.”

Embarassing piece by Football Italia. People had to go under the Kop to get to the ARE. Even allowing for shit translation everyone knows you cannot go under the Kop.

I have no problem with Italian people but this is just downright lies and disinformation.

  2. I was just having a discussion with myself over a coffee and ginger snap so thought I’d check in with you good people to settle a difference of opinion.

Rob Jones would make my all time Liverpool XI all day long v Poppycock, it’s obviously Phil Neal.

I’m old enough to have seen Phil Neal but couldn’t add anyone before him to the debate. How good was Chris Lawler? Steve Nicol was just too good in other positions, Marcus Babel didn’t play long enough. Carragher was better as a CB and Steve Finnan was just not quite at their level.

    Who’s right! Me or Me?

Chris Lawler was great. I think Neal eventually overtook him as the best scoring fullback although Chris did not take pens. I do not generally compare players from one era against another. They were great in their time and that is all you can ask.

  3. When we went in 84 we stayed about 20 miles outside Rome. First morning there we found our coaches trashed. That is the equivalent to visiting fans coaches parked up in Warrington being attacked the night before a game in Liverpool. We were then told there was a public transport strike on in Rome so could not get into the city until time to travel to the game. I have never experienced such hostility travelling to an oppos ground. Louts on scooters were kicking the coach on the way to the stadium. Near the ground we had to slow to a crawl going along crowded streets. apart from the verbal volleys we got there were kids and adults lobbing anything not tied down at the coach. And we were just fans not the official Liverpool team bus. I hope people going to Rome stay safe and urge them not to get separated or go off piste by themselves. Do not expect the police to protect you as they were worse than the ultras. Stay safe.

    Dear Express newspapers,

I am writing to you to protest the article you posted on behalf of your employee, Colin Mafham, on the Express's LFC online page.  The level of inaccuracy and misrepresentation of past events would appear to suggest some level of agenda-driven malice.

It is shocking that it managed to pass your editorial process. Although this article was taken down on line, why did it get to that point in the first instance? Did your Sports Editor review this article and believe it was accurate? If so, that is a worrying level of incompetence, and would suggest failures in your quality control process.

I attach a link here that counters Mafham's fallacious article:

Would you please consider balancing Mafham's deceptive narrative with the right-to-reply? The Anfield Wrap has acclaimed journalists. How about providing them with the same platform you provided to your hateful troll of an employee?

Mafham perpetuates the continued hatred and baiting by some people that the horrific attack on Sean Cox was a case of Liverpool fans receiving some sort of 'rightful retribution' for (Mafham's fabricated) past wrongs. Apparently, the narrative runs that Roma fans attacked Liverpool fans because of the disgraceful treatment of the Manchester City bus a few weeks ago. Mafham conveniently fails to mention the unprovoked attacks by Roma supporters on Liverpool fans in 1984 (and their subsequent attacks on supporters of clubs such as Chelsea, Tottenham and Middlesborough), because that would undermine his agenda.

According to Mafham, any counter to his spurious argument is proof of our 'victims' mentality (as someone involved in football, Mafham would be well aware of the 'Always the victims' chant). Was he inviting trolls, and more of his type of hatred, with his abhorrent click-bait claims? Please ask him.

Liverpool Football Club and its fans (especially Mr Cox and his family) deserve an apology from the Express, and your Sports Editor. I doubt Mafham would ever consider doing this, so I ask that you act with the integrity Mafham evidently lacks.

I would also suggest the Express reconsiders its relationship with Mafham. Are you happy to allow him to continue his agenda against my club and fellow supporters? An agenda that probably was formed during his time with a disgusting newspaper that was proved to have lied about fans at Hillsborough. Are you happy to pay him whilst he gleefully persists with his prejudices?

    Thank you.

    Thank you.

  5. Funny they missed the 3 fellas getting charged in the lower gwladys recently. Funny they gloss over the 12 year old lad shouting racist comments at a game and his Dad just laughing and looking smug. As to how those Roma lads were charged so quickly one there was filmed evidence of them doing the attack they were quickly caught by the police three they were foreign nationals so were held to stop them skipping back to Italy.

  6. I see teflon gobshite Mourinho is saying he could not play Mo at Chelsea more often because there were other better players in front of him and anyway it was Chelsea who forced the decision to loan him out then sell him. Yeah right. Makes you wonder why Mourinho personally phoned mo and said he wanted him in his team when he had all these better players in front of him and gazump the fee we were prepared to pay. As for the club forcing the loan and sale on Mourinho that is just more bollocks to deflect criticism away from him. We all know Mourinho had no real desire for Mo he just wanted to prevent another team in this case us from potentially getting a good player and being more competitive.

He will be on a contract to write articles for them in return for payment. It is quite common place.

Thing is I saw that original article and it already had loads of anti Liverpool comments about Hillsbrough victims getting English clubs banned etc etc. Mafham knew he was stirring shit with it and got the response he wanted. It is a disgrace the Express every published it.

  8. Italian press just stirring up shit for when their ultras kick off and say it was Liverpool fans who started it. They clearly do not know that most of the official 5000 going have to have been to a couple if not most European aways to get tickets for this. If there is a 1000 known trouble makers in this lot how come there has been no trouble reported in our away games beyond rough house policing away to Seville.
