The supply of cheap penalties bought on the back of dives and spineless refereeing has dried up and he's not happy. 

Brendan has been fined for suggesting that Mason is a better ref than he actually is. To be biased he would need to be competent in identifying a foul but not awarding it because he favours one side over the other. Actually he is so poor he doesn't see the foul in the first place. 

If he gets Freddos down to 10p again I may have to give him my support.

Good point (in full..) And that's it in a nutshell I think: Regardless of what the fans want, the maxim 'if it ain't broke, why fix it' will apply unless some budding politician makes it their cause and really pushes for it.

 

I think this sums up Government policy on this issue. They would have to examine the concept of 'safe standing' first and it isn't really on their sport policy agenda at the moment. 

Any change is unlikely. Football grounds which host top-flight matches in the UK must comply with regulations managed by the Football Licencing Authority, which include a requirement that all stadia are seated and seats individually ticketed. Those regulations were implemented in response to the Taylor Report. The Government would need to amend those regulations and would (most likely) only do so in response to a wide-ranging consultation. There is no appetite for such a consultation this side of the General Election in 2015, and given that this is not a party political issue, would not be a priority issue post the Election.

Spot on. The "Arsenal model" is corroding the League and lowering the overall standard. It is perverse that you can finish 16 points off top but still essentially get the same rewards.

Agree also that CL drop-outs shouldn't get anywhere near the EL. That more than anything devalues it. It's the Plate for the CL also-rans who can be arsed with a sprinkling of FC Whothefuck's. No wonder noone wants to pay to watch it.

Yes I agree. A season-season business plan is very expensive. They have had quite a bad blip this year though - even if they win their two remaining games, they'll have 8 points less than last season, but still 10 more than 2 seasons ago. The point made above about the quality of their CL Group, which for a team that had won its League was ridiculously hard, is fair - although not winning a single game was pretty poor by any standards. Overall someone has to decide whether it is a blip or a trend, then act. With the upheaval at their main rivals though, to take away that advantage by removing their own manager is a risky and maybe unnecessary decision to take.

There isn't too much a manager can do when the whistle blows - it's fatuous to say that the loss to Wigan was Mancini's fault for example. A manager's job is to get the best out of his players, develop young talent and transplant in mature talent as and when needed. That's how and where you get judged. That appears to be where he's fallen short of requirements. Unless he can show that he can reverse that, then there is only one course open to the people running a club.

Chelsea started the season like a train, then the wheels came off as league form evaporated and they went out of the CL. Abramovich got rid of RDM and brought in someone who knew what he was doing with a fixed brief, which he fulfilled with a game to spare and has a very winnable European final ahead of him. What is amusing is that Abramovich was criticised (not by Chelsea's craven supporters mind) for ignoring fan opinion over RDM but is now bending to it by not keeping Benitez on. Putting him in charge next season given the turmoil at United and City, the continuing weakness at Arsenal and the flimsiness of Spurs should be a none-decision.

Ultimately who cares, but it would be a bad day if Benitez did get the job, as Chelsea would clean up. If that show-pony with his pre-menstrual hissy fits shows up instead that's no bad thing.

If Everton beat Chelsea they'll have 66 points. That's a big ask for anyone to better next season and Moyes has left a poison chalice there. And a whiff of failure too as the Blueshite will never have a better chance of finishing 4th than they did this year.

On a different tack, is there any more obvious an appointment than Benitez at Chelsea? Comfortably filled the brief to qualify for CL, in a European final and made the semis of the other two competitions. With him in charge they'd walk the PL next year.
