  1. The mad thing is, the purported reason they won’t release the OBR forecast until November is to give them a chance to announce their supply side reforms that are supposed to show the market that they have a serious plan and everything will work out ok.

But look at what areas they are looking to reform and they’ve got no chance of getting them all through parliament. Johnson briefed multiple times he was going to change planning rules to make it easier to build and had to back down every time after it became clear a load of his MPs would vote it down. And he had (initially) a lot more goodwill with his party than Truss has.

Immigration she won’t get through since she wants to make it easier for struggling sectors to recruit from abroad. ERG will vote that down. Even stuff like moving the working time directive and the limits on the amount of children childcare workers can look after will be controversial and put pressure on Tories not to pass it.

No chance the Tories vote all these things through and also vote through the 45pc tax  rate cut and the cut to benefits. Enough of them know it’ll be absolutely suicidal to be associated with this when they come to campaign to be elected again.

  2. Some right fucking nutters out there. Great review of the new Stephen King book this, even without the weirdness about the Queen, the fucker hasn’t even read it.

Thought it was Stringy reviewing it for a minute before I realised this guy is only 75 years old.

  3. I’m naming more than five as all handsome young men are entitled to.

    Under the Banner of Heaven

    Godless

    Unbelievable

    Watchmen

    Defending Jacob

    The Outsider

    Good Omens

I think The Outsider is my favourite from recent years. Honourable mention to Fargo too, multiple seasons but each one is a self contained story.

All time O.G. Miniseries is definitely Band of Brothers. That’ll never be beaten.

Kananga had been living in Florida when, in 1969, he left the country for Jamaica.Kananga established a crocodile farm in two acres of virgin mangrove territory in Falmouth, Trelawny. By late 1970, with the help of locals whom he befriended, Kananga opened the Jamaica Swamp Safari. It featured hundreds of American crocodiles, three American alligators, a python, a pair of lions and a chimpanzee. Kananga had a particularly close relationship with a pair of black leopards whom he named Angel and Satan

Kananga oversaw daily shows where locals and tourists would watch him play with the leopards and lions and wrestle the crocodiles and alligators.

In 1972, whilst searching for a suitable location for the James Bond movie Live and Let Die, location scouts were intrigued by a sign which read, ‘Trespassers Will Be Eaten’. After meeting with Kananga they were convinced the Swamp Safari should be used as part of the fictional San Monique. The charismatic Kananga inspired screenplay writer Tom Mankiewicz to name the film's villain Dr. Kananga. In the movie he is played by Yaphet Kotto.

Kananga suggested the stunt of Bond (played by Roger Moore) jumping on crocodiles, and was enlisted by the producers to perform it.The scene required five takes to complete, including one in which the last crocodile snapped at Kananga's heel, tearing his trousers and causing him a number of injuries. One required 193 stitches. Kananga was paid $60,000 for his contribution.

Kananga returned to live in South Florida in 1976. He trained wild animals at the Seminole Indian Village in Broward County. The same year, various news reports described Kananga being attacked by his male leopard Satan, and how he was saved by 19-year-old Brenda Surles, who was forced to shoot the animal on Kananga’s orders. Surles only wounded the animal. Kananga killed the animal before collapsing. Surles was also required to shoot and kill Satan's partner, Angel, who had escaped into the Seminole Village tourist park. Kananga was taken to a hospital and treated for many wounds in his neck and back.

Kananga died of a cardiac arrest while spearfishing in Collier County in the Everglades in 1978, aged 32.

  5. First two episodes out on Friday, in the UK anyway. Reviews are in and seem mostly positive (they’re all based on the first two episodes only). The Mail gave it one star which I’m taking as a good sign.

I’ve been looking forward to this more than House of the Dragon so be interesting to see which one is acknowledged as coming out on top.

The visual splendour of this rich, gorgeous Tolkien drama will make you gawp throughout it makes House of Dragon look amateur.

I love Galadriel (Morfydd Clark) the fighter. She is valiant, flawed and haughty, as bloody-minded as she is brilliant, scarred by the horrors of war.

This is enormously enjoyable TV, a cinematic feast.

Amazon's prequel is kind of a catastrophe.

It takes six or seven things everyone remembers from the famous movie trilogy, adds a water tank, makes nobody fun, teases mysteries that aren't mysteries, and sends the best character on a pointless detour.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power sets out its sprawling epic fantasy credentials right from the off: even its title seems like it could be split into multiple instalments.

While The King Of Power might be a brand new story, it still has plenty of authentic Tolkienesque charm to go along with the best production value money can buy.

    Variety

From this prelude onward, The Rings of Power narrative adopts a solemn and awestruck approach.

The first two episodes are admirably concise and compelling in their introductions.

Lavish and sweeping, The Rings Of Power puts its money where its mouth is.

The immensely fun Dwarves are Scottish-tinged and larger than life, canny and caring all at once.

It might take a second to get accustomed to these new characters, but the signs are that it will be worthwhile.

'Don't the great tales never end?' asks hobbit Samwise Gamgee during a slower moment in The Lord Of The Rings. He's talking about his own journey through J. R. R. Tolkien's epic fantasy world – but he might as well be referring to the franchise itself.

As a start, this is an excellent one.

Despite the inventiveness that the creators have had to deploy to populate Tolkien’s world with fresh, non-canonical characters, the whole thing has the vibe of terrified executives carrying an exceedingly expensive vase across a slippery floor.

Perhaps two episodes aren’t enough to judge, and we are indeed gearing up for the greatest and most gripping fantasy TV series ever made. But I’m certainly not there yet.

I’ve got a pretty good inkling of how Amazon is hoping to make its money back. By flogging thousands of expensive big screen TVs - so viewers can truly appreciate the full cinematic wonder of this J.R.R. Tolkien masterpiece.

The special effects in this prequel could very well blow his Peter Jackson’s pair of Tolkien trilogies out of the water - and that’s before we’ve even seen the most spectacular of the promised battle scenes.

    Verdict

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is telling its own story using the lore of Tolkien as a foundation, and the first two episodes make a solid case for why that story deserves to be told in such extravagance. While the first episode gets a little too caught up in exposition, the second is able to build on the characters and their relationships much more naturally, setting in motion a few intriguing subplots and a respectable amount of action. Through it all, it’s always well-acted by its ensemble cast and gorgeously shot and produced, with cinematography, effects, costumes, and original music that rival the biggest of big-budget movies.

This Laimer played the equivalent of nearly 14 full games in the league for Leipzig last season.

Not because of injury to be fair, he was only injured for 5 games but because he was only selected in their starting 11 15 times.

He came off bench 11 times.

    Unused sub 3 times.

1,241 mins - works out to just under 14 full games worth of mins.

If he hasn't been first choice at that level - is he good enough for us?

Maybe that was down to it being the season after he missed 8 months with that ankle break to be fair - but regardless he has not played a lot of football over last 2 years and we need someone who is sturdy and reliable - not sure he is...especially given how tough it is to play for us.

Now look at Konate the season before we signed him. Available for 24 Bundesliga games, played 692 minutes. Ten games on the bench which he didn’t come on for. Came on as a sub for another half a dozen games. Also didn’t play much the two years before we signed him. Is he good enough for us?

It looks like we’re shopping in the bargain basement relatively speaking. There will be cons as well as pros.

"Not as good technically" are the words I love to hear about our new midfield target.

I’d love De Jong or Barella but it doesn’t look like a signing like that will happen so at the price range we’re browsing you’re going to have to compromise somewhere. Don’t have to like it, it’s just a fact.

And I’d rather have someone who can press and add a physical presence to the midfield than someone who is better on the ball but slow. Just my personal preference.

    Is his ankle ok though?

He had a bad fracture and missed 8 months with it and has since been out with 'ankle problems'

He hasn’t missed too many games apart from the main ankle injury. I’m not too worried about that tbh, sure the medical will pick up if he’s fucked. He’s not like Thiago or Ox before we signed them, he’s just had the one bad injury.
