In our recent games, since Madrid, we have been scoring for fun, and although no small part of the credit goes to Gerrard and Torres, Benayoun and Kuyt have played major roles in our continued excellent play (Alonso and Mascherano too).
No doubt, most of us will give players like Benayoun and Kuyt their props and we all agree they are very good players, but not many will argue that they are world class, and even this transfer season, wingers/wide players will no doubt be the top of nearly everyone's list of priorities (besides maybe Rafa)
I wonder, will a supposed world class player or potential world class player bring as much to the table? Kuyt and Benayoun (and arguably Babel) are exactly the 10+ goal a season midfielders that Rafa has been talking about for years. They contribute quite a bit in creating chances too. And with a fully fit Torres and Gerrard contributing probably 20+ goals a season, thats a title winning attacking force.
No doubt there are some "wingers" that you could put safe money on betting that they will equal or surpass 10+ goals a season, ie Messi, Henry (both arguably don't play as "main striker"), Ronaldo, Ribery and Robben. But besides them, if we go for a lesser proven winger, but supposedly world class, would it be too much of a risk? I am talking about Joaquin, Queresma or the like.
But doing so, are we killing the dynamics of the team? I dare say when both Gerrard and Torres aren't on form, Kuyt and Benayoun have taken up the slack in scoring and creating, and both arguably are leaders and lead from the front. Their willingness to battle for every ball, and be available for every attack to is invaluable, and is not something easy to replace. I can see Rafa's reason for chasing Tevez, because he is of the same ilk.
