During Dave's recent visit to India, some Indians have been demanding we return some diamond we obtained from them a few centuries ago. The Greeks have been badgering us about the Elgin Marbles we legally bought from them and now they want us to give it back to them. Egypt wants the Rosetta Stone, despite the fact it was first found by the French, from whom we took possession. If we returned every treasure we had acquired from former colonies there would be nothing left in the British museum. These ancient artefacts have been preserved and well looked after by the British, the greatest curators on earth. If we gave these objects back the likelihood is that they would be destroyed or eaten by the new would-be owners.
For that reason, I say we keep hold of these treasures. Besides, to the victor goes the spoils, we won much of these objects in war. If the original owners want them back, let them try taking them by force.
