  1. Not really too fussed about getting into the royal/republican debate, but just wondered what people thought of the recent and quite rapid upsurge in support for all this type of fanfair? I genuinely can't remember the golden jubilee in 2002, I know the silver one was a big thing and I'm sure we've all got family photos of it, but did anyone even do anything for the golden jubilee? I'm all for people having a day off work, and I genuinely love the idea of street parties, I think anything that gets neighbours chatting to each other is great, the stronger communities are the less susceptible they are to crime etc. But where has it all come from? Is it somehow linked to the 'war on terror', similar the way there's been a massive upsurge in support for Poppy Day (a different thread that, perhaps), is it nationalism plain and simple?
