I'm not sure if the Labour Party realises the court and probation services are at breaking point and the prisons are full. Dragging low level destitute people through the police stations and courts will soon prove counter productive and unworkable.  What the hell Yvette Cooper thinks will be gained by clogging up the justice system with drug addicts who've pinched steak from Asda and young mothers pinching baby formula from boots is anyone's guess.  It certainly won't deter them. It'll simply make the situation worse. 

Putting a stop to DWP benefit sanctions and repeating the £20 a week Universal Credit increase used during Covid  would ease the situation at a stroke. Shoplifting went down during Covid when the crime was made easier because of mandatory masks/social distancing.

Meanwhile. 

I can see Labours honeymoon period being very short lived if they're not prepared to try to eradicate social injustice. The people factor it in with the Conservatives I'm not sure they'll be so forgiving to Labour if they simply continue to protect the wealthy whilst offering little more than scraps and gimmicks to  everyone else.

Which of those two do you prefer? There is no third option, if you want peace.

That's your assumption, I think it's a bit more nuanced than that.

Option 2 does not necessarily mean he gets what he wants but we'll see. Option 1 would be wonderful but unless this new round of American aid is used wisely I think it's doubtful tbh. I believe this aid package is roped in with more aid and weapons for Israel to carry on bombing kids in another occupation so it dampens my enthusiasm. 

Anyway I'll leave this thread for the armchair generals.

Nope. It's not a reasonable inference. 

The facts are the Russian economy has not imploded. The Ukrainian counter offensive was not successful. The war in Gaza has changed focus and perceptions (especially on the difference in American reaction and hypocrisy). The amount of Ukrainians dodging service is high  (a bbc report puts it at 650,000: link futher up if you can wade through the fog of bullshit). War weariness is beginning to set in. The Russians are not as isolated as they were in the months after the invasion. Zelensky has sacked his genera. Western countries have elections this year which will take precedence over Ukraine. Last but not least, most conflicts end in negotiations. It does not in anyway mean "Giving Putin what he wants".
