  1. think of a series of events A, B, C lets say event A is you sitting, event B is you standing and event C is you walking we can describe the series of events in one of two ways; tensed and tenseless. tensed: at event A, event A is present, events B and C are future at event B, event A is past, event B is present, event C is future at event C, events A and B are past, event C is future this is our usual way of thinking about time. tenseless at time t1, event A is before event B and event B is before event C at time t2, event A is before event B and event B is before event C at any time tn, event A is before event B and event B is before event C tensed terms have been removed from our account of time, all that is left is tenseless terms and fixed permanent relations. the argument goes that all time can be accounted for in this tenseless way. this means that all tensed statements can be rewritten as tenseless statements. consider: i am hungry (am is tensed here, meaning i am presently hungry) this can be rewritten as: at time t1 person A is hungry (is here is tenseless, like the 'is' in 'is before than') this is the tenseless theory of time, it is designed to be compatitble with JE Mactaggart's famous 'The Unreality of Time' paper in which he claims that tensed time relies on an inconsistency and therefore time is not real.
  2. Questions welcome. I'm here all day (working on two 4,000 word essays, but never mind that). Metaphysics, Ethics, Epistemology, Political Philosophy, Philosophy of Science, Philosophy of History... Fire away.
  3. most likely inconclusive, as Popper said; 'The game of science is, in principle, without end. . . . .'
  4. In a nutshell: Online bookmaker offers you a free bet as an introductory offer if you sign up and bet X amount of your own money first (say, bet £100 to get a £50 free bet). You bet £100 on liverpool to win at the bookmakers at evens, you lay £100 against liverpool to win at a betting exchange again at evens. (laying is betting that something will NOT happen, so laying liverpool to win is betting that liverpool will not win). Two possible outcomes: Liverpool win: You WIN at the bookmaker (+£100 profit) You LOSE at the betting exchange (-£100 loss) net = £0 Liverpool do not win: You LOSE at the bookmaker (-£100 loss) You WIN at the betting exchange (+£100 profit) net = £0 Either way, one of your bets wins, the other loses. The system is designed so that you do not lose anything (or only a very small amount) of your own money in order to qualify for the free bet. Once you've done the 'qualifying bet', you are now entitled to the free bet; repeat the same process with your £50 freebet: Liverpool win: You WIN at the bookmaker (+£100 profit) You LOSE at the betting exchange (-£50 loss) net = £50 Liverpool do not win: You LOSE at the bookmaker (-£0 loss) You WIN at the betting exchange (+£50 profit) net = £50 You make a profit here because in the first case (liverpool win), you get the £50 winnings from your free bet plus the £50 free bet stake back (total = £100) - this gives a profit of £50 after the loss at the betting exchange is taken into account. In the second case, your loss at the bookmaker is £0 because you lose a free bet that did not cost you anything - hence giving a £50 profit either way. NB - This is the first kind of free bets, where the Stake is Returned (SR). Many bookmakers offer free bets that are Stake Non Returned (SNR) - these are more advanced, so when I'm explaining how this works I always start with the easier SR case. Hopefully that's a decent explanation to begin with.
  5. I'm assuming you were aiming at... FOR FUCKS SAKE RISSE! but yeah that's about right. As for the gambling side of things the private forum on raotl is actually open to anyone who asks me by pm or on the main board for access, it's only private to stop it showing up in google (ie so that bookies can't easily find out where their odds are out). Lessons are free, profitable and risk free. Ask the kids on the rattle (or join there)... As for all the welcomes, cheers - should I be worried about being 'negged' - should i even care?
  6. No, but I did study Theoretical Physics for 3 years at the University of Manchester before I did my second degree at Nottingham (Philosophy), now doing my MA which means I've been a poor student for 7 years. Thankfully it's all over in September (I'm on a 12 month course). Nice quote from Mr Marley by the way. If you're interested, Metaphysics is the study of concepts, entities and things in general that lie beyond the scope of conventional physics (Greek 'meta' meaning beyond, although the term is actually derived from the fact that Aristotle wrote a book called the physics, then one after about this kind of thing - hence it was given the name metaphysics, literally beyond or after the physics). So I'm interesting in ontology (what exists), epistemology (issues of justification, truth and such like), normative and metaethics (what you should do in a given situation and why you should do it) and a few other strange areas. Causation is another big metaphysical worry, it's quite a weird area of study to honest.
  7. 34E, 34F depending on womanly factors. And no, there be no pictures here.
  8. Evening all, Given that my usual haunt of RAOTL seems to have disappeared for the evening, I thought it was about time I made use of my registration on here and said hello. To be honest, I don't really know what to put in a first post - I'm 25, kop season ticket holder since I was 6 and currently doing a MA in Metaphysics at the University of Nottingham. Since Easter I have run a 'matched betting' school for raotl forum members on a private section of the site - to cut a long story short it's a way of making money from online bookmakers risk free. The average forum member has turned £150 into over £650 (i.e. £500 profit). I did register with OTK to ask whether anyone would be interested in it there, but they didn't seem overly keen. Anyway, I know a few of the raotl lads post on here too, so they should be able to put a good word in for me. It was a shame to see the fanzine go though - I had every issue from about 94 - 98, and plenty after that date. All good things must end I guess. If this place is anything like the rattle, then I'm expecting questions about man bags, COHT, wool/scouseness and the size of my girlfriend's tits. Fire away. John
