The Echo, especially James Pearce, is the club's mouthpiece.
And the club is not stupid. They are trying to simultaneously improve the team by bringing in good players, but also not to rock the boat with existing players worrying about being replaced. Which means that behind closed doors they are negotiating for players, but in public they have to say "we're happy with what we have."
Alisson was a perfect example - Klopp has admitted we were seriously looking at him going back to February. But knowing that if this came out, it could have a negative impact on Karius (who was playing at the time), they had to deny it. Thus the multiple articles from Pearce saying that we were happy with Karius and we weren't looking at replacements.
This will be a similar situation. It is possible that we are talking with Rabiot and his agent. It is also possible that we aren't. Either way, it is in the club's interest to make it public that we are not. If he comes, he won't be coming until next summer (or maybe January) and in the meantime it doesn't help anyone for our interest to be public.
So they give the Echo a call and have them shut it down. The same way they did with Alisson, and multiple other transfer targets that we ended up buying. It means precisely nothing, it's just to avoid any potential squad disruption in the meantime.
I'm not sure those stories had much to do with protecting Karius. The club was just playing negotiation games with Roma. They achieved nowt.

Other than sentimentality, is there any reason why they shouldn't retire him a test early and blood another batsman?

Great stuff. Solid pro, plus, we need a squad.

Has he left yet?

Will be a great squad option when he relearns the football.

Credit to the visitors. Brighton will know that they've been in a gam...oh what?

Great to see Keegan back managing in the premier league.

I think we'd have won that if we'd stayed one goal ahead on the scoresheet when the final whistle was blown.
