I wish we would use that strong position to not only tell them we won't do business with them but also to send our support to all of those their country is wrongly imprisoning and killing. It's a shame everyone seems to think the only response to sportswashing is standing by and letting it happen. If they want publicity, give it to them.

In principle I agree. If we’ve learnt anything in the recent past though it’s don’t poke the bear. We’ve got the Mancunian referee mafia on our case, if we said that to the Saudis I’d just expect them to up the ante and bud more, for more players.

just say no thanks and be done with it

We wanted to sign that Aussie right back from Blackburn at one point, the angry one who tried to kick or elbow anything that moved, was it him?

Catching up a bit here, so apologies if someone else has mentioned this but wasn’t that Lucas Neil ? Didn’t he break Carra leg after after he turned us down ?

You don't want to sound conspiratorial, but for a ref who was so quick to book Trent for throwing the ball back into play, you have to wonder.

Those incidents plus the clear kick away by Gordon just after Trent get his yellow, as mentioned above, it does make you wonder. I’m sure it’s all subconscious bias …. If they’re in Red book em, if in zebra stripes don’t worry about it.

If we are continuing with the current tactics then a left sided centre back who is comfortable in the left back position would I think be the priority. Don't think the way we are currently playing is helping Robbo much.

Yep, that’s Funky cold Medina, can also play an inverted CB role similar to Trent but from the left.

I think we're all agreed that we need another centre back. But we need to be honest about what kind of player we're likely to get.

Virge, we're surely agreed, will play most of the games. Konate, the consensus seems to be, is first choice to partner him, but needs some rest, so he's likely to play, what - 75 per cent of games, at best?

So who do we need? Again, the consensus seems to be that Matip is no longer good enough, and neither, often enough, is Gomez. So presumably we should be aiming for an affordable and available CB - ideally under 28 - who is better than Matip or Gomez, but who'll not resent too much being limited to, barring an injury crisis, about twenty-five per cent of all games.

That's a pretty limited market as far as I can see. Is there a realistic target?

Funky cold Medina, how many times …

Got to be honest, the more I hear about Endo, the more excited I get. He seems a very good player.

The Bundesliga has had a few flops, but it's a very good league. Celebrated players like Veron and Schevchenko have been flops over here so let's see what this lad can do.

    2 more players please though.

Let’s see how Endo gets on. What I’ve not understood since Ibiza Jorge started was if his area of expertise is the bundesliga, why weren’t we looking at their players ?

So if Endo turns out to be worth a first team DM role, well played Jorge, now get out of Pacha, leave the Gary Abletts for a couple of days and get some more players in.

Bring out simple rules. Clubs can only own no more than 20 senior players or 23 if playing in Europe. Scrap the loan system for players aged over 21 or similar age based on evidence.

Didn’t the Super league want to do this, for all it’s problems a max roster and salary cap are great ideas from US sport, keeping things competitive etc but when his English or European football been run to be competitive and balanced ?

Head of I think , not the whole team.

There’s a lot of cross pollination amongst some of the teams on this. The head of recruitment at Brighton went to Chelsea. I also read the other day, that one of the reasons Lavia decided Chelsea, bar our fuck ups, was that he was recruited at City, by someone who then went to Southampton and took Lavia there. The same guy has just this summer, in turn moved to Chelsea, so Lavia was recruited by the same guy for a third time.

someone commented about our seeming inability to deal with the other teams successfully in transfers and I wonder if this lack of cross pollination hinders us. Jorg on his sun lounger in ibiza is a bit isolated

Trent had 2 players there for their goal, the lad behind him and the lad who scored. Who wouldn't have scored had konate just stepped out and played the offside. There's about 5 different things you can question on that goal and Trent is about the bottom of them.

I think he probably could have done better, but he’s just not defensive minded is he ? In the same way a great striker is tuned to attack the ball, so a great defender has that same instinct. He hasn’t got that instinct. With Trent as RB his attacking positives far outweigh his defensive negatives and once we get the right players in, it will be masked as it used to be, by a better overall team understanding.

"He told us that on Friday". That's literally the point. The fact that we had no idea whether he wanted to play for us or not until Friday AFTER we had a bid accepted is absolute amateur work. Clubs make contact with potential transfers targets WAY before making their first official bids, much less have bids accepted, that's pretty widely known, numerous managers have mentioned as much before, Postecoglu literally said it in his press conference just over the weekend.

I mean you can talk to Brighton fans about how critical Caicedo was to them. Most of them weren't particularly concerned about MacAllister leaving, a WC winner, they were all far more concerned about losing Caicedo. He probably hasn't had the body of work to be called transformative, but I think his talent level is right there.

I thought the word on the street was we got agreement from his agent they’d accept our offer and terms, however, when Chelsea found out, they went back and upped the contracts terms. I saw £220k per week ? from our man LifetimeFan. So the agent told him to stay in London. I’m sure the player is getting little input, given he was dead set on Arsenal originally.

So as I understand it you’re correct, teams do get the nod before they bid, we did but got done by the agent.

For what it’s worth this was my mate this morning.

Chelsea knew of our interest but then they  also knew every club in the top half of the league had spoken with his agents, they didn’t think our interest serious and as such have been dragging this out.

Player has got frustrated after he’d given his word at the length of time it’s taken to get done. Especially having done everything he can behind the scenes to hurry this up was feeling let down by promises made not materialising yet.

The big guy (Boehly) is a law unto himself, they expect Chelsea to match our offer knowing they’ve offered the player approx £220k a week and let the player decide.

”If this doesn’t go through I guarantee there’ll be articles in the press trying to blame Pochettino for it not going through.

    I’d still say it’s 50/50”.

You say Caicedo is frustrated, but is he frustrated enough to agree terms with us ? Sky said in the it transfer show that personal terms agreed but not seen that anywhere else ?

Can’t believe there are people going out of their way to put a negative spin on this.

oh we’ll sell him in a few years…

oh why have we waited this long?

oh why didn’t we just get Bellingham then?

    It’s a sickness.

Agreed, if we get him, there is no negativity but but we haven’t seen the lean yet, will he agree terms, Will Chelsea come back and match the offer …

that Jorg is a lad isn’t he Chris …

Klopp just said that Mac Allister will be the "6" tonight. Curtis had a slight knock but he's still on the bench, but he was playing mac there,  "to see how he goes"!. So our 6 cover is now a stretch away from being out and Bajcetic and thiago are nowhere near ready to play.

    Intriguing

And by intriguing I mean a clusterfuck

Mac is comfortable as a 6 he played there a third of the time for Brighton. I think he’s a better fit there than Jones. I like tonight’s team, let’s see how it goes.

ps of course we need more sign8ngs etc

Don't know - if you use golf as an example any Italian team that was thrown that kind of money would sign up. So Juve and both Milans. PSG and City/Newcastle/Chelsea are in. Barca would take the check as well imo. That lot plus the big 4 there is 12 in a breakaway league.

Who else do they need - us, United, Bayern and Real?

So the ESL band is back together then

    Yeah.

Problem is i dare say they won't give a toss who they sell to - especially if it is a race against time to sell a declining in value asset.

They don’t, but we do. I don’t want us state owned, being self sustaining actually fits us, but if it mean’s we can’t be successful, would we accept that ? I’m quite positive about next season and I think we’ll be comfortable back in the top 4, but in 2 or 3 years time, especially when Klopp goes. I don’t know

It is hard to see our value going higher than it is at present - but at same time it is hard to see us getting a buyer at such a price.

I don't think FSG are terrible owners - but they are what they are and will want to maximise the return on their investment - i'd expect a sale within next 12 months, especially if we stay outside the european cup places, they won't want to cough up what it would take to get us back to top and they won't want to lose out on a good return - it will be a sale at a price a bit lower than our peak value, but will still represent a massive profit for FSG. The thing is though who can buy us at what would be a lot of money and be able to invest big money in squad?

That’s exactly it. More venture capitalists, another oil state, some shady Russian, a wealthy scouser ?

the question of who would be suitable/acceptable custodians is worth a thread of its own.

They should have sold 18 months ago, imo they held on only because they thought the ESL would happen - couldn't find an interested buyer and now have missed the boat.

Saudis on their way to building their own super league.

Surely the ESL or something similar is more likely due to the Saudis prescience. Maybe with UEFA involved this time as they need to protect their product. In the same way the Saudis threw money at golf, divided it then got a seat at the table.
