By M.McGrath March 1 – 2009 Fifteen year old Cannonvale prodigy Todd Jenkins has recently signed a pre contract deal with European juggernaut Liverpool F.C. Jenkins represented Australia at the U/17 Futsal world championships held in the UK last year. After impressive performances @ the indoor championships Jenkins was identified by the Anfield club’s vast network of scouts. The player was later offered the opportunity to trial with the Merseysider’s. Todd then further impressed during these trials & was then invited to extend his stay so the club could run the rule over the Cannonvale kid as he was invited to feature in a number of reserve team games. Amongst others, Jenkins got to play in the Mini Derby @ Goodison Park against bitter rivals Everton & fulfilled a childhood dream by playing on the hallowed turf of Anfield. Again Todd did enough to impress the powers that be, while the youngster was not overawed even when training with the first team & the likes of Steven Gerrard, Fernando Torres and Xabi Alonso. This then led the five times champions of Europe to offer the gifted young player a pre contract with the club. The deal singed gives Liverpool first right’s to the player should he turn professional of which is expected to eventuate over the next year or so. When questioned about his upbringing in the game Todd offered some genuine insights that can only inspire other young players in the region to aspire in following his footsteps… “I started playing soccer in as a kid, basically just to make friends & I haven't had much high level coaching but I really love futsal and moving through the rep teams in that has given me an opportunity to go to Liverpool”. Regardless of Jenkins future success these achievements further prove that much talent is developing throughout the region & that Ian Ferguson’s future pathway vision for the Fury certainly has merit. A NYL (National Youth league) team for the Fury club is an obvious priority & it may not be long before the Fury has a number of locally bred players competing with Australia’s finest in the Hyundai A-League.
