We all know the problems we have going forward – whether of personnel or tactics. But I feel that our defence is a major problem at the moment – the reason United win when they play poorly is because they invariably keep clean sheets, which is something we are just not doing this season, or at least not to the extent of previous campaigns. We saw that AGAIN today. So why is this? Is it system (and can we NOT talk about zonal marking here!) or personnel? Pepe still has had the odd shaky game (as against Portsmouth), and my one small criticism of him remains that he just doesn’t make enough saves to shots converted, although overall I still can’t think of many all-round better goalies in the premiership. Dossena is obviously a massive cause of the defensive uncertainty, and clearly cannot be given another game for us, especially with Aurelio AND Insua available (Although of course Dossena was a Macia signing, so you never know). Skrtel to my mind is a decent player but he never quite manages to convince – I always think he’s got an error in him waiting to happen. I’d say the same about Agger, whose got a major weakness in the air and also can be bullied too easily. Arbeloa is sound enough, if a little lacking physically at times. Most worrying for me is that Carra has been some way below his usual impeccable standards this season – he’s been playing more like he did in 2006-7 – and also isn’t giving the calm leadership that we’d expect. I’d go as far as to say that our best defender this season has been Sami hyypia – and that we miss him when he isn’t playing. I’d certainly like to see a new centre-back brought in during the summer, especially as Agger seems to have fallen out of favour (for whatever reason), if only to freshen things up. Any thoughts?
