  1. Two dead after shooting incident in Somerset village A Somerset village was in shock today in the aftermath of an incident which left two men shot dead. The alarm was raised last night after reports of gunfire at a house in Westbury-sub-Mendip, near Cheddar. Police raced to the scene to find a man had been shot. The victim died shortly afterwards. An operation was launched to discover his identify, only for police to find the body of another man in the churchyard of the nearby St Lawrence Church . He had also been shot and a shotgun was recovered nearby. The first victim has been named locally as Ray Masters. Today, St Lawrence Church and the neighbouring Westbury House remain cordoned off as forensic teams carry out an investigation. Police are talking to the community in an effort to discover what sparked the tragic incident. Locals said Mr Masters, a businessman, was shot in his home, a large, detached property with its own security gates, next door to the church. People in the quiet Somerset village near the Mendip hills are still coming to terms with the shock. Ros Wyke, chairman of the parish council, told the BBC: "We are all deeply shocked and saddened by it. It's not something you wake up to every day." The BBC reported that a neighbour had said he heard six to eights being fired just after 10.30pm last night. An Avon and Somerset Police spokeswoman said: "At 10.39pm on Sunday a call was received by police from someone reporting that a man had been shot at a house in the village. "Police attended the scene but the man died shortly after the incident. "An investigation was immediately launched to identify the person responsible and inquiries led to the discovery of a man’s body in a nearby churchyard. "At this stage police are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident." Anyone who was in the area at the time or may have information that could help the investigation is asked to call Avon and Somerset Police on 0845 456 7000 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111. Something doesnt smell right about this.
