  1. Interesting how much better Allen looked once we upped the tempo. Glad to see Sturridge & Suarez looking like a lively combination, as well as how much more dangerous Suarez looks playing with another striker.

It would be nice if we could find the right midfield balance, whether that is bringing in someone big who can play in the slower, more muddled games, or another attacker.

But fairly happy with the performance in the second half. Frustrating that we seem to either play wonderfully or totally hopelessly. It looks like it will take a long time and a lot of patience, but signs are that we can kick on if the owners and the management team add to the squad. Will be very worrying if we are done in the transfer market.

  2. Looked a lot like a team hungover both mentally & physically from a disappointing Europa result. Not to mention players like Allen looking like all the minutes logged have taken their toll.

Downing can see out his contract training with the reserves as far as I'm concerned. Pepe Reina takes a shot in the face because Downing can't hold off the physically-imposing Nathan Dyer. Says it all for me. Beyond shameful.

Beyond that infuriating moment, it looked to be tired legs & minds, especially in the 2nd half. The movement in & around the box we saw Thursday was absent, the urgency wasn't there, the sharpness wasn't. Frustrating to watch, yes, but you can see the same frustration on the players' faces.

It looks a lot like we'll need an impeccable performance in the January window to bring a few different dimensions to midfield, as well as up front. In short, we need a miracle window, which is unlikely under ideal conditions. There will be better days than this during the season, regardless of our performance in the transfer market, but it looks like the current squad is finally stretched as far as it can go. The onus is on the owners & the scouting team now.

  3. 1. Johnson

    2. Suarez

    3. Allen

Thought Skrtel was excellent on balance. Sterling was bright. Borini & Coates were something of a question mark for me to start with--they both look like they will come good with time. Kelly also unlucky. For me, Glen Johnson was steady in defense, brought a great deal of energy in attack--must admit, I didn't think he would ever be such a stable part of the side. He makes great strides each season, and I thought his energy, composure and class shined at both ends of the pitch. Enrique coming on also had the (pleasantly) surprising effect of taking away a lot of space and joy for Tevez. Good substitution that.

Worryingly, another week where we seemed not to be able to get a call in the attacking third. Absolutely comedic when K. Toure dragged back little Sterling & got the benefit of the call. Kompany also receives a talking to for blatant obstruction on Suarez (as in: no doubt the ref saw it). Laughable. Better refs, faster clearances in defense & no underhit back passes next week.

  4. Right. Transfers.

Are we really committed to not signing anyone?

Suarez is (soon) back in the team, but we certainly seem to be lacking something that even he doesn't bring. What're the [vaguely] realistic options for changing our approach as a team? Do they involve Sterling & Suso, as we've heard rumblings of? Do they involve a player from the lower leagues brought in at the last minute (with or without a helicopter, the Sky Sports Understand fanfare, etc...). Particularly curious what will happen over the coming months.

  5. STRIKER

I'd enquire about Asamoah Gyan now. Politely, but sternly.

I'd enquire about Samuel Etoo in the Summer, from that weirdo club. Yes, he's making a packet there but I'm sure he won't last 3 years in Siberia, and he only signed a 3 year deal. 'Go home Sambo', that's the banner I'd use to urge him to return to europe proper.

I'd ask about Artem Milevski from Dynamo Kiev, at 6'3" he'd be able to handle himself, but also good on the deck. Also great with a rifle, and trustworthy to a fault. I once borrowed £40 off him at an airport and said I'd pay him back. I then jetted off to Miami for 9 days. Lo and behold, Artem was at the foot of my bed, at 3.40am, with a shiv pressed into my back just 48 hours later. He requested the money back.

I'd then phone Lyon about Lisandro Lopez, and ask them to describe Lopez to me in one sentence or less.

And then I'd try to baffle Sevilla by demanding £33m in installments for Negredo, or I'll sell him elsewhere.

    WINGER

I'd ask Lille about Hazard, and then when they tell me the price, I'll spit in their faces and tell them to fuck off back to their rustic farmhouses, the cunts.

I'd then politely ask Ajax about Christian Eriksson.

I'd also pick up the phone and speak at length with anyone from Sporting Lisbon about any of their wingers, regardless of whether I've heard of them or not, they just fucking grow them.

I'd also fax Lyon and say to them, "That Gourcuff lad, he cost you a fair whack didn't he? How many titles have you won since then? Exactly, give us a go on him for £14m", and I'd send another one saying "Michel Bastos eleven mill" two minutes later.

    DEFENSIVE MIDFIELDER

First off, a swift call to Mrs M'Vila, offering her protection and good luck from evil spirits, and that her husband would earn millions of 'Golds' from us for his work. Once she traced my call and accused me of racism, I'd try to placate her with a new house for her parents.

Undeterred, I'd then dial the number of Porto and demand to speak to the agent of Joao Moutinho, saying that I'm his doctor and that I must tell him something of great importance. The receptionist tells me that he is unavailable. I burst out crying and say "so young, so fucking young...", at which point the phone goes dead.

I feel lucky, nobody gets De Rossi, nobody even bothers to ask him. I phone him, I man up, "Danielle", I say, "sign for Libpool and we'll make a real legend out of you". He whistles loudly down the phone, I whistle back harder, the line scrambles and eventually I receive a fax telling me to fuck off.

I then fax Leroy Fer and Kevin Streetman, sending them a detailed picture of my penis with a question mark being spunked out of the end of it, and a puddle of cum making the dot on the end of a question mark. I rage, "what's the point at the end of a question mark called?". Neither of them know.

Somebody get this man a beer. He's earned it.

  6. a monkey hitting keys at random on a typewriter keyboard for an infinite amount of time will almost surely type a given text, such as the complete works of William Shakespeare.

Actually, that one's the other way around: the chances are 1/infinity, & therefore the odds are always increasing, sort of thing. 1/infinity acts as zero (though, always approaches it & never actually reaches it).

Diame. I'd be happy with bringing him in for Lucas. Spend money on a finisher, or at the very least, someone to help score goals until the summertime when a more proper investment can be made. As Dave's recent match report said, there's not much wrong with the team at all other than scoring goals. Shame they're so important.

  7. I reckon Charlie Adam had a fine game. That final pass was the sort of thing one imagined him coming to Liverpool to do.

I was impressed with Lucas today, which is not to say I think he's not normally impressive. Also Henderson looked more assured than usual. Bellers was utterly mad & inspiring, as he always is. Suarez, of course, was a beautiful menace. Agger & Skrtel looked good.

But above all, all these thousands of miles away & watching via television, the away supporters were all I could hear from kickoff, on. Beautiful thing, that.

  8. As the dust settles. That's probably the best we've played at Stoke and not won. 2 guilt edge chances we should have fucking scored from that we really should have taken. A 50/50 penalty, and them putting 11 men behind the ball. It was always going to be a hard game, and we where pretty much on top for the second half.

We're going to have games like this, it's still a new squad which will frustrate and display phenomenal performances in equal measure. Yes I'm gutted, but it's Stoke we've never won there, and not many teams will go there and win anyway. I'm not too disheartened because we clearly didn't deserve to lose and we will play worse than that and win 3-0.

It's a reality check for some, but although I was hopeful of a win I was never certain you never can be with Stoke. Yes it would have been great to win, and but for a poor penalty decision and 2 players scoring two of the easiest opportunities players will have in this league, well it would have been a different story.

Our problem in the past with this game has been our approach, tactics and mentality. Nothing was wrong with that. At all in any way shape or form so we can take comfort from that. You need to go to places like these and win to achieve plenty of things in the league, we didn't win but we should have. Hopefully we'll compensate for this at other venues this season, based on the performance I don't see why we can't 4th is the aim, not league winners and we really need to remember that.

I fully expect us to twat Spurs though, the players showed the right attitude Bellamy had a good game, Suarez was boss, Henderson is quite obviously a confidence player he'll be feeling like shit so I'd be tempted to rest him if SG is fit.

As Kevin Keegan once said, I'm not disappointed, I'm just disappointed.

Ah, the sweet, sweet taste of sanity. Well said.

  9. Luis-Suarez-1.jpg

He's got a twin!?!? My God, sign him up at once!

(Really though, let's indulge in a moment of childish fantasy: how immense would 2 Suarezes be? One might well try to kill the other on or off the pitch over the course of a season, but it's a risk I'm willing to fantasize about)

  10. Poor Abs. I've got a bit of sympathy for him given he can be a better poster on here than R****d was. Or others. His team (& its manager) are still moaning twats for the most part, mind.

  11. They all have the same hidden objective: find a reason to be upbeat about players that would be joked about at that price if it was anybody other than us doing the buying.

Perhaps it's a bit unfair to quote only this bit, as the rest of your post was really quite reasonable (I'd certainly like to see Turan here as well), but wanted to touch on the optimism bit.

Assuming we have owners who will splash out a little cash with an eye towards the squad as opposed to 'net spend,' etc., and assuming that our good form & the good mood around the club will continue to grow, the team will continue to be as exciting to watch as it was in the last months of the season, I'm feeling very optimistic. I don't think that's naive, or wishful thinking.

Am looking forward to next season. I'd like to see a little shoring up here & there (mostly knowing we have proper defensive cover for a long campaign), and if they brought in a particularly exciting player, it'd be icing on the cake, as they say. The academy has been improving steadily, the first team is looking promising again & the financial situation looks stable for the first time in a long while. Above of all else, the King is back, and it feels like LFC is being run like LFC again. Optimism justified, IMO.

  12. I genuinely reckon Downing will be a much better purchase for us then Young will end up being for Utd. And I'm not just saying that now, I've been saying that since the ITKs were saying the Young deal to us was done. I think Downing is a much smarter player and will suit us a lot more.

Not to mention, how many wingers do the Mancs need? Obertan is supposed to be their next big thing, Nani and Valencia seem fairly well entrenched. That fella with great new hairplugs likes to play in the hole, if that's where they were thinking of Young. Essentially, they've gone and spunked out 20m on a centerback (their strongest position, probably) and will spend another 20 or so on a winger/forward? It smells like sweet, sweet panic to me.

On the other hand, we seem to be spending & spending with purpose, with conviction, for the first time in a long time. Even the Ratface signing from Atletico saw us splash out cash, but with no guarantee of success, it felt like a huge risk. There was a sense that if he flopped and flailed about hopelessly, that there wasn't another 20m to buy someone else. What really excites me about the summer so far is that it doesn't feel like we're totally dependent on any one signing to have to pan out right away.

Also Suarez exists. He delights my heart, brings joy to my loins.

  13. So, Real is parking the bus at home now? Guess thats what you get with Maureen. Not much 'Galactico' about Bolton-tactics.

Does, however, call to mind all those times Fat Sam made the claim he could be managing at Real Madrid...

  14. well you handed man u the league...enjoy that. And a point wont get you anywhere and you will finish 6th at best

Sorry, didn't mean to taunt. As far as posters go, I probably rate your opinion higher than half the self-professed Liverpool supporters on here. But even the Arsenal supporters wouldn't suggest that Wenger is guiltless when it comes to hectoring & posturing. Smart man he might be, and capable. But stoic in the face of bad news he most certainly isn't.

  15. Liverpool were particularly weak up front and Dirk Kuyt and David Ngog were the only recognised back-up for Fernando Torres.

Despite this imbalance, the Reds still had one of the heftiest wage bills in the Premier League and Henry is determined to reshape the squad to deliver better value for money.

Seems he's talking about why we're short strikers, at left back, at centreback, out wide, yet still have one of the highest wage bills. Logically, it follows that if you're spending lots, you have lots--always disappointing to find you haven't got lots once you've spent lots. If we hadn't brought in Carroll and Suarez, we'd be dreadfully short of attacking options right now.

  16. no you underestimate how thick footballers are. They want to be associated with stars.

They really are a thick, vain lot. I'm in agreement that, absurdity of absurdities, LeBron James having any association with us gives us a bit more street cred, if you will. Can't hurt. Perhaps he can even replace Brad Jones? He's got long reach, probably very quick reflexes.

  17. I never said it excused Shrek, I posted it as it came to mind when I seen today's incident. Not everything will get punished, especially when it concerns the mancs.

Seems worth mentioning that Stevie's looked a bit like they were just tangling, and okay, a bit of elbow, but the Mancs was way off the ball, and he went out of his way to throw an elbow into him as he came across. Wrong on both counts, both deserving of some punishment, but still different degrees of aggression, seems like. Also, it seems more culturally ingrained in the Mancs. The self-righteousness, the scheming and the arrogance of slur and his boys seems outdone, to my mind, only by the antics of ashley cole, john terry, drogba et al. (Thinking of the attempted leg-breaking stamp cole dished out on Alan Hutton and the ensuing mobbing of the ref once that little cunt got off with only a yellow, or of moments like it's a fucking disgwace.)

Leaves a bad taste in the mouth, the whole business.
