  1. Another immense performance from Sami Lad. An absolute fucking rock. Yknow whenever you think he's starting slide he just comes in and proves you wrong.

What bargain we got and what a servant. Easily our best Centre Half since Jocky.

  2. 1. Episode of 'The Gentle Touch' where a woman and her son get kidnapped by fellas in balaclavas outside a shopping precenct that looked exactly like Bootle Strand.

    2. The Steadicam shots in 'The Shining' going round the corners.

    3. The Box of Delights

    4. Whenever David Banner changed into The Hulk

    5. The bit in Halloween II where Michael pretends he's dead then jumps up and slits somebodys throat

    6. An episode of Doctor Who (Peter Davidson) where Nyssa gets attacked by a mute dressed as a Harlequin.

    7. David Cronenbergs 'The Brood'.

    8. The jigger that ran at the back of the houses opposite our side in our street.

  3. It's depressing to see people using a Michael Moore interview as the guy's epitaph when he actually did hugely positive things for the Civil Rights Movement at a time when such actions weren't publicity stunts.

Contributed far more good to society than Moore ever will. And Planet Of The Apes remains an astonishing piece of work.

Very true. In his younger Democrat days he was also in favour of gun control (!) and opposed to Vietnam. Like many of the legends of yesteryear he didn't give a fuck and said he wanted. A far cry from today when all movie stars seem to do is kiss each others arses.

He is also responsible for 2 of the best anecdotes in movie history. They are:

    1) That he once attacked Sam Fuller on horseback with a saber for calling him a 'lying prick'.

    2) When overhearing a studio exec bemoaning Sean Connery's refusal to play ball on a film set he retorted 'son Sean's a man with balls and you'd be well advised to keep your opinions to yourself if you want to keep yours.'

  4. I like it at the pics but I need to re-assess. Infernal Affairs is a fantasic film. I think they can both exist alongside each other.

The Departed is Marty's best film since Casino but its still a long way from Goodfellas.

  5. I've had mixed feelings about him so far. Sometimes he seems too lightweight, and his passing seems unadventurous and insipid. He just doesn't seem traditionally Brazilian in style, but I'm sure he's playing to instruction.

And to play as big a part as he has this season with Gerrard, Mascherano and Alonso as competition shows how highly he's rated by Rafa.

Above all, it's a world apart from the kind of football and climate he was used to in Brazil so would be grossly unfair to judge him before next season.

I have to agre with every word of that. My opinion on Leiva changes also match by match. I was well impressed when he first broke into the team. He looked very much a Liverpool player. Sometimes though he looks overrawed and frightened to take responsility which could be explained by the above if he is playing to instruction.

He's only what 21? You could argue that there are plenty of 21 year old foreign players who look far better in the Prem but it is only his first season so as our amigo says, its far too early to judge.

  6. After reading his article in The Observer yesterday I've warmed to him. Despite his cocky reputation he just seems honest and straightforward.

He also says he loves a strict, disciplined manager and thats what modern day players need. He said Managers shouldnt want to lark about with you nor sit down for a coffee and a chat, He also referred to Capello as "Mr Capello". Gotta love that. He'd love Rafa.

I think he's good enough for us but then again I thought that about Dirk.

  7. Mancs calling us dippers is hilarious. Isn't there more smack rats in the Manchester area per head of population than anywhere else in the UK?

Oh and they dress like cunts.

I've a strong scouse accent and I've worked up and down the county. Never really had any bother or comments other than in Mancuntia and once in Coventry.

  8. I havent seen it since I saw it on the pics when it finally came out. I didnt like it then but to be fair I went with my 1st bird and her fit younger nubile cousin who got the finger halfway through the film whilst my bird was trying to make sense of Olivers warped direction.

I'm happy to re-asses now without the distraction of trying to flick some1 off without being sussed.

  9. Poor old Derry Matthews - that was grim.

Looks like he'll have to have his car re-sprayed then.

Brave lad but fought completely the wrong fight. Funny though where on the highlights post-Khan (as opposed to the live fight) he says to Georgie Vaughan in the break between rounds "He's shite an all' about his opponent. If he's shite Derry lad then what does that make you?

He'll bounce back Derry but has to be at a higher weight cause he looked drained to fuck.

  10. There's some gorgeous female flesh on display nobody can deny that but by 8 pm Town is full of lads in suits swaggering about like Jimmy Conway in Goodfellas and women (of all accents) complaining that they're feet are killing and they're freezing.

Aintree is great for the city in terms of raking in dollops of cash but its the most annoying time of the year.

If I wanted to share a weekend surrounded by arrogant, boorish twats flashing money in a vain attempt to shag a bird I'd go to Dublin.

  11. Pacino and De Niro have done way to much shit to be the outright great actor, you're allowed make one or two but they've been constantly churning out rubbish the last few years now.

Very very true. The last 2 great performances either of them put in was ironically in Heat - 13 years ago.

Modern day (as in last 20 years) you're probably looking at the likes of Denzel for consistently good performances and the same in terms of career choices.

For all time I really couldn't even begin to hazard a guess. Al/Bobby are up there like with Brando, Olivier and dare I say Newman? Not a classical actor but even in his later years he could still put in a good peformance.

I honestly dont think anybody with a front bum can touch Meryl Streep for sheer range. Jodie Foster comes close and maybe Katherine Hepburn.

Maria Conchita Alonso I'm afraid only makes the Top 10

  12. I can understand people being into their sound and his voice over the song as thats a musical taste thing but calling Thom Yorke a genius is just plain wrong.

Dylan, Hendrix, Lennon/Mcarthy, Miles Davis are genius's.

That's a strong argument and I see what your saying. Perhaps the word 'genius' is overused.

I concur. All of the above are complete genius'.

  13. Thom Yorke is a genius.

Pablo Honey - Decent debut. Highlight: Creep

The Bends - One of the best albums of the 90's. Highlights: Every fucking bit of it

OK Computer - Vastly overrated, overproduced and Thom's singing at its most whiny but still a very good album. Highlights: Airbag, Paranoid Android & Lucky (although thats cheating as that particular gem was at least 2 years old anyway).

Kid A - Vastly underrated . Innovative, fresh, ahead of its time and Thoms singing at its very best. Highlight: The National Anthem, Everything in its Right Place and Idioteque.

Amnesiac - An almost mirror image of Kid A in its style and content but the songs not quite as good. Still a great album. Highlights: Pyramid Song & You and Whose Army.

Hail to the Thief - Less ecletic, electronic and left of field = not as good. Highlight: We Suck Young Blood & The Gloaming

In Rainbows - A vast improvement on the last album but a Bit of a mixed bag. Probably cos the songs are from varying stages of their career. Highlights: Nude and especially House of Cards, one of their greatest ever songs.

The Eraser - Thom's solo album. Work of art. Electronic masterpiece. Highlights: All of it but the standout is Harrowdown Hill about the suicide of Dr David Kelly.

    There ya go.

  14. To be honest I thought he look very assured and in no way overawed against an aggressive, young and skilful midfield. In fact he looked like he was prepared to take responsibility unlike Lucas has recently (although Leiva did have a decent game today).

Cant help feeling for Spearing though who has ben tearing trees up in the ressies for some time now and is still no way nearer the first team. Shame has Jay has ability.

Well done today though to the youngster.

  15. He's awesome but he's not as talented as dear old Georgie. Cant drink half as much and Best never had a face like somebody had glued cornflakes onto it then scraped them off with a chisel.

Would Ronaldo have nutmegged Johan Neeskens 6 times within the first 30 minute of a game when he past his best(sic), half pissed and playing for a shitty club side? Would he fuck.

  16. Jose Luis Firpo was a huge Argentinian, was known as 'The Pampas Bull' and knocked Dempsey clean out of the ring. Jack got back in and knocked him all over the place...up and down it was...a truly great fight. I've got a still of that fight on a T Shirt.

Esteban De Jesus was an underrated fighter and beat Duran first time out, but Duran was just savage the night of the second fight. I think they fought 3 times in all, Duran winning 2-1. I think its fair to say that his time at Lightweight was just about the best of Duran's career, and when you consider he then won titles at Welter, Light Middle, Middle and SuperMiddle, you can see just how good he was. Probably the best Lightweight of all time.

The Neary Holligan fight was an entertaining fight, I was at that fight in the tent on Stanley Park car park. Neary just looked so much bigger than Andy on the night. Jamie McKeever from Birkenhead made his pro-debut that night.

I've always liked the Leonard-Hagler fight...I was a teenager at the time, I wanted Leonard to win. I must have seen that fight a hundred times or more now, and I could still be persuaded on all outcomes as a result. It wasn't that Sugar Ray was the clear winner, it was that he was so much better than everybody expected him to be.

The talk before the fight was that it was madness him taking it....that Hagler would quickly bring him to his senses. Leonard was coming off a long lay off...a second retirement in fact. He had retina trouble, had a comeback fight vs Kevin Howard when he got put on his arse for the first time in his career, eventually won in 9...retired again, and then after a break of 2 years came back to fight Hagler of all people.

Hagler wasn't used to losing and the loss to Leonard of all people made him give it all up. I think he could have taken defeat better if it had been anybody else...but Hagler only had himself to blame, he virtually gifted the opening 4 rounds to Ray. Leonard was always seen as a pretty boy and a White Collar fighter to Haglers blue collar image, but this was really unfair on Leonard. Just because he was an Olympic Champ and a good looking boy, people thought he had it easy. Ray Charles Leonard was from as much a deprived background as anybody else and just because he was articulate and could box didn't mean he couldn't mix it when necessary. It was a close fight and I think Leonard did just enough to win it. One of the judges had him winning 118-110 which was a different fight to the one I saw. Like I said, I think it was more a case of Leonard exceeding expectations than Hagler being ordinary, although it has to be said that Leonard knew what he was doing and caught Hagler at the right time....he was in decline and the championships were over 12 rounds instead of 15. I think had it been a 15 rounds fight, Hagler may well have caught up with him.

Great post that mate. I was very young but have since watched that fight a number of times. I love Duran. He was like an animal in the ring.

Have you ever read the books 'Dark Trade?' or 'War baby'. Keep meaning to buy them but just aint got round to it yet. Also fancy Micky Vanns book. Read The Shadows of Boxing. Interesting stuff and the interview with Naz at the end is a cracker.
