1) Southampton played football. Our philosophy this season has been all about getting the ball down, playing short passes and playing the game in a certain way. Southampton didn't play the long ball, bullying tactics, that have out done is in the past for which we've used excuses. They beat us at our our game.
2) European Football. In recent years we may have travelled back from European locations or at best, played midweek matches at home on a Wednesday or Thursday. After watching a poor away performance we could at least say 'ahhh.. We looked leggy or had little time to prepare'. We had all week to prepare for this match.
3) First XI. Looking at that team when we lined up, 3 selections (forced or unforced) stood out and concerned me. Brad Jones, Martin Skrtel and Joe Allen. Brad Jones didn't have a bad game but I'll discuss him in below in point 4. Skrtel had a nightmare and it unfortunately it wasn't a suprise. I think his days are numbered at the club and I won't be sad to see him go. He just doesn't have the ability to be good enough. Allen also had a nightmare, whether that was letting players past too easily or giving away possession too easily (when he wasn't even under pressure). I don't know whether this shoulder injury is taking it's toll but he shouldn't be in the side ahead of Henderson, and deffo not ahead of Lucas!
4) When Brad Jones plays we clearly don't have the confidence to build from the back. I'm talking clear instructions from the manager not to play in a way that we've been so used to all season. Goal kicks and deep free kicks go long and we don't play pass backs as often
5) Daniel Sturridge plays like he just got out of bed. The lad got off to a flying start and he clearly has the ability to make a difference in games. But I hope we don't see too many performances like he's had in the past 2 games. He seems to be lacking in match fitness and I hope that's all it is. But I fear he's lacking in match intelligence.
Few discussion points there. Thoughts?
