I just read he's gone to Newcastle. That happened quietly.

 

We’ve taken a look at the eight players that left Liverpool permanently in the summer and how they’ve fared since.

 

Note: we’ve only included players that made at least one first-team appearance for the Reds.

Sadio Mane

A Liverpool legend, Mane helped the Reds win every major trophy during a six-year stint at Anfield before deciding to seek a new challenge at the end of the 2021/22 season.

 

He completed a £35million move to Bayern Munich and hit the ground running with five goals in his first six appearances, including a goal against RB Leipzig on his debut in the DFL-Supercup.

 

The Senegal international has failed to maintain that form and has gone four games without a goal, while his performances have also been under scrutiny.

 

“He put in so much for Liverpool,” Bayern boss Julian Nagelsmann said after the 2-0 win over Barcelona.

 

“He’s a new signing. He just needs to adapt. He was trying. I’m certain he will succeed for us.”

 

But he was dropped to the bench in their last Bundesliga game and former Bayern midfielder Didi Hamann believes Mane should be left out of the starting XI for a sustained period.

Takumi Minamino

After impressing for Red Bull Salzburg against Liverpool in the Champions League group stages, Minamino joined the Reds for just £7.25million in January 2020.

 

While he impressed in the cup competitions, the forward could never nail down a first-team place at Anfield due to the form of Mane, Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Diogo Jota.

 

The Japan international joined Ligue 1 side Monaco in the summer in a deal worth £15.5million but has struggled to justify that price tag.

 

He’s made six appearances in all competitions at the time of writing but hasn’t scored for the club and is yet to complete a full 90 minutes.

 

The 27-year-old was replaced at half-time during a 4-2 defeat at home to Troyes and has since been an unused susbtitute in their last three games.

Ben Davies

Davies joined Liverpool in January 2021 but didn’t play a single minute of first-team football for Jurgen Klopp’s side and spent the 2021/22 season on loan at Sheffield United.

 

The centre-back moved north of the border and completed a £3million move to Rangers in the summer but his start to life at Ibrox has been plagued by injury struggles.

 

He’s been restricted to two substitute appearances in their Champions League qualifiers and one start in the Scottish Premiership.

Neco Williams

Despite impressing on loan at Fulham in 2021/22, Williams still found himself behind Trent Alexander-Arnold in the pecking order at Liverpool.

 

The right-back decided to leave Anfield in search of regular first-team football and completed a £17million move to newly-promoted Nottingham Forest.

 

He’s started in all of their Premier League games this season and has played a key role for Forest in both attack and defence, helping fill the void left by Djed Spence’s departure.

 

“It was important to get early deals done. Neco was in high demand and we felt we needed to do it — it was too good an opportunity,” Forest manager Steve Cooper said.

 

“We couldn’t take the risk of losing him. [Spence and Williams] are both attacking players and we are really happy with Neco. He has had an excellent start to playing regular Premier League football.

 

“He got that regular rhythm at Fulham last season which I think was important. The exciting thing about Neco is he loves the growth and the learning and likes to reflect on games. He likes the detail we go into and we have to make sure we provide it as every player is a little different.”

 

But the Wales international now faces competition from Serge Aurier, who has joined Forest on a free transfer after leaving Villarreal.

Lorius Karius

Karius made 49 appearances for Liverpool after joining from Mainz in 2016 – the last of which came in the 2018 Champions League, where he made two costly errors in a 3-1 defeat to Real Madrid.

 

After loan spells at Besiktas and Union Berlin, the 29-year-old served as Liverpool’s fourth-choice goalkeeper in 2021/22 before leaving on a free transfer at the end of the season.

 

He’s now joined Newcastle United on a short-term contract until January 2023 and is expected to play back-up to Nick Pope.

Divock Origi

Despite being a cult hero at Liverpool, Origi was never a first-team regular for the Reds and was allowed to leave on a free transfer at the end of 2021/22.

 

He joined AC Milan on a four-year-deal but has endured a tough start to life in Italy.  The 27-year-old, who has struggled with injury problems, is yet to start a match for Milan and has failed to find the net in four substitute appearances.

 

According to reports in Italy, Milan are already drawing up plans to sign a replacement in the January transfer window.

 

“There is no doubt who the worst signing of the season has been in Serie A: Divock Origi,” journalist Alvise Cagnazzo wrote in the Daily Mail. “The Belgian left Liverpool hoping to finally nail down a starting spot at a top club, but his time at AC Milan has so far been a disaster.”

Ben Woodburn

Woodburn came through Liverpool’s academy and became their youngest-ever goalscorer when he scored against Leeds United in an EFL Cup quarter-final in 2016.

 

But that proved to be his only goal for the club, and he made just nine more first-team appearances before being released at the end of 2021/22.

 

The 22-year-old joined Preston North End following a successful trial but has struggled to break into their starting XI and six of his seven Championship appearances have been from the bench.

 

However, he did start in both of Preston’s Carabao Cup games and scored his first goal for the club in a 2-1 defeat against Wolves.

Sheyi Ojo

Ojo struggled to break into the Liverpool team and became a serial loanee, spending time at Wigan, Wolves, Fulham, Reims, Rangers, Cardiff City and Millwall.

 

After being released by the Reds at the end of the 2021-22 season, the winger decided to return to Cardiff for a second spell. He’s since made nine appearances in the Championship, starting six games and featuring three times from the bench.

 

The 25-year-old has shown glimpses of his talent and produced a brilliant performance in the 0-0 draw with West Brom but is yet to register a goal or assist for the Bluebirds.

He was saying origi was arguably our best finisher, Unreal in training. But simply couldn't get into the team because of injuries and the sheer work rate of salah, mane and firmino. 

 

It's unfortunate for him, because clearly he's a decent footballer

While I wish him well on Sunday I found that article a bit of bollocks to be honest. 'Karius was always a confident,risk taking goalkeeper...' is where I had to roll my eyes. He was a bag of nerves and made some basic errors interspersed with a few great saves. He was shown way more loyalty than he deserved and just didn't seem cut out for a role at a top club. The fact he has failed at so many lesser clubs since would indicate that while there may have been concussion involved the truth is that he was or is a bit shit at his job. I hope it changes for him on Sunday but I just would be surprised that if it does it wont last long.
