    Munich

Today, 50 years ago. BBC ON THIS DAY | 6 | 1958: United players killed in air disaster 1958: United players killed in air disaster Seven Manchester United footballers are among 21 dead after an air crash in Munich. The British European Airways (BEA) plane caught fire shortly after take off this afternoon with 38 passengers and six crew on board. The footballing world is reeling from the loss of some of its most talented young players - known as the Busby Babes. Their average age was 24 and they included Roger Byrne - the captain - Mark Jones, Eddie Colman, Tommy Taylor, Liam Whelan, David Pegg and Geoff Bent. Queen 'deeply shocked' Eight British sports journalists and several club officials have also been killed. The Queen has said she is "deeply shocked" and has sent a message of condolence to the Lord Mayor of Manchester and Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation. The chartered aircraft was bringing the Manchester United entourage back from a European Cup match against Red Star Belgrade in Yugoslavia and had stopped at Munich's Riem Airport to refuel. On the third attempt to take off the plane over-shot the runway, hit a house with its port wing, veered to the right, hit another building and burst into flames. The fuselage did not catch fire and several crew and passengers went back into the wreckage to rescue the injured. Team manager Matt Busby was described as being the most seriously hurt and is being given blood transfusions in hospital. Star striker Bobby Charlton has been treated for slight head injuries. According to the Chief Executive of BEA, A. H. Milward, there was a heavy snowstorm in Munich and the pilot delayed departure because he was dissatisfied with one of the plane's engines. This was the first fatal accident for this type of BEA aeroplane, which has carried 2,340,000 passengers on 86,000 flights since it began service in 1952. The same plane - called Lord Burghley - took the Manchester United entourage out to Belgrade on Monday.
  2. Can anyone give me one reason why this horrible cunt doesn't deserve to have his scum head chopped off for murdering 6 of his children? I hope he gets raped to within an inch of his life every single night he spends in prison.
  3. After a humiliating FA Cup exit Arsenal provide the perfect opportunity to get our season back on track. Coincidentally, like last season a game against arsenal can make or break our league campaign, last year we all know what happened, we battered Arsenal from pillar to post literally hitting the woodwork 3 times, missing penalties and martin kelly missing from under the crossbar only for Van Rapist to score 2 from half chances. Our record against arsenal is quite poor but this arsenal side are very fragile both physically and mentally so it is important we remain solid for the first 45 minutes and then hope suarez and sturridge can cause them a few problems. Arsenals two main treats are wilshire and Cazorla, definitely a game for henderson and lucas and no allen. ----------------Reina-------------------- Wisdom----Skrtel---Agger----Johnson -----------Gerrard-----Lucas------------ Downing--------------Henderson--------- ----------------Suarez-------------------- ---------------Sturridge-------------------
  4. We are treading water and slowly sinking. The top 4 improve and it seems we are shopping at NETTO again. If this your the plan please sell up now because we will not accept mediocrity. We are a fucking joke. This isn't fucking American football or baseball were you get first pick of drafts if you are shit. We don't want a sugar daddy but if your not prepared to put your money in your pocket the club will fall further behind. Thats they way football works unfortunately. Their comment saying the manager will get time basically tells us were not signing anyone whatsoever of any significance. I have been on side with NESV but they don't seem to know what they are doing.
  5. Great player, great guy, I'd take him here. Hard luck lad. My (our) thoughts go out to you.
  6. May as well start it because it's doing my nut in not seeing a match thread on the day of the game. Three points to hopefully finish the season above Everton, but I'm off the boozer later to watch the Manc games and I'll have to catch up on this on MOTD later.
  7. Was that performance by Andy Carroll on Tuesday the best individual performance we’ve seen this season? I reckon so, with perhaps Steven Gerrard against Everton and Luis Suarez at Norwich running it close. But they both scored hattricks whereas Carroll didn’t get a goal against Chelsea at Anfield. He didn’t need to. Everything about his play on this occasion was just awesome. Did I mention it was awesome? Right from the start you could see him wanting to build on Saturday. The belief and self confidence was etched in his face even before kick-off. He won every ball in the air against John Terry and Branislav Ivanovic, and as much as Chelsea would like to dismiss this as loss for their reserve side I’m sure they’d prefer to have had those two playing in Munich next week. [insert joke about Bayern wanting to appeal Terry’s ban here] But it wasn’t just that. He was fantastic along the ground too. He kept getting himself in front of the defenders and even when the ball appeared lost, he’d somehow wrap his legs around the defender and tackle it to a team mate. His movement was superb as well, he looks so much more mobile now and you don’t expect him to fall over at every step. Basically, he was just unplayable and he was the catalyst for everything that happened. When the rest of the team sees that kind of defending from the front it gives them confidence. And when they see him bring down balls and flick balls on to Suarez or the wingers from difficult passes whilst under pressure from big centre backs we build from it. We keep possession and we keep momentum in attack. With so much attention having to be paid to Carroll, that other forward of ours is free to roam. That’s what Carroll can do for us. That’s what we paid so much money for. That’s what we thought we were getting. That’s what we’ve been getting for the past couple of months. And that’s what we hope to be getting next season. I don’t care if he only scores 8-10 next year if he delivers like he has done recently, because it will mean others should get many more than they have this season. You compare the current Andy Carroll to the unfit and overweight version of last season and it really has been an amazing transformation. By all accounts he’s found out or been told what it means to play for Liverpool and what it takes to be successful here. And fair play to the lad for taking action on that and getting his head down. Keep working hard and hopefully we should see a string of performances at this level in the future. I was excited when we signed him because having seen him impress at 16 against our youth team this was the kind of player I thought we’d signed. I think most of us had given up on that but now it looks like it is after all. Pete Schulz
  8. I'm not sure if I even want to watch this. I will though, obviously. We have an opportunity to wipe out their top four dreams if they fail to win. It's out of their hands anyway but it would be nice to be the ones to drive the final nail home. We also need a home win to close the gap on the bitters and not least to restore some pride following an utterly abysmal few weeks. I expect starts from the usual fucking clowns and if we scrape a draw I'll be surprised.
  9. EXCLUSIVE: Liverpool FC accounts show £50m loss including £35m on Hicks & Gillett 'new Anfield' John Thompson, Head of SportMay 3 2012Comment (1) Recommend THE cost of clearing up the debt mess left by Tom Hicks and George Gillett at Liverpool FC is fully revealed in today’s Anfield accounts. New owners the Fenway Sports Group pumped in £200m to wipe away most of the club’s debt when they bought it. But £35m has since had to be set aside for the American dream that died. That was the massive amount spent on design fees, legal and administrative costs in regard to the futuristic - but ultimately futile - stadium plan commissioned by Hicks and Gillett from Dallas based architects HKS. And its costly failure is predominantly responsible for an overall annual loss in the accounts at Anfield of £49.4m before tax. The HKS glass and steel design plan or Stanley Park is now on the scrapheap - and the many millions it cost described by the club as ‘significant wasted money’ after being written off. Another stadium design plan - commissioned previously from Manchester based architects AFL - remains live as the Reds ponder whether to redevelop Anfield or build anew. In all, the costs of Anfield stadium planning have so far totalled £49.6m - £35m of it relating to the failed Dallas plan. The cost of that doomed stadium plan, masterminded by Hicks, is listed in today’s accounts as a major ‘exceptional item’. However, the stadium write off costs will not impact upon the club’s ability to comply with new European financial fair play regulations - as they are not included in UEFA break-even calculations. Another exceptional item in the figures - the cost of hiring and then parting company with new England boss Roy Hodgson and his backroom staff 18 months ago - is listed at £8.4m. That ‘termination payments’ figure also includes a settlement with former LFC Managing Director Christian Purslow, who played a key role with current MD Ian Ayre and Sir Martin Broughton in ousting Hicks and Gillett after a titanic courtroom struggle in October 2010. Purslow left the club soon after Boston Red Sox moguls John Henry and Tom Werner stepped in to rescue the Reds. Today, in an interview with the Echo, current MD Ian Ayre said the accounts represented a major cleaning up operation post Hicks and Gillett and said they meant the club was now in a solid and stable position He also stressed they reflected the major commitments made by Fenway Sports Group to consign Liverpool’s dark days to history and move the club forward into a new era under Henry and Werner. Said Anfield MD Ian Ayre: “They key message is that the new ownership has created stability, a long term opportunity for Liverpool and some good foundation work that hopefully we’ll all build upon. “It’s really about everyone being together and shown unity. We have seen in the past what happens when you don’t have everyone working together. “One of the key things of this ownership group is that they do want everyone to work together. “They are very open and collaborative about the way they go about their business. “They don’t create walls between people. “They don’t do that in their own business in the US. “Everybody has got a voice and gets a chance to say what they think. Everybody is involved and that’s the best way for it to be. “We have a great team of people here who just need to build on what we have started. Key highlights in the accounts published today show: Liverpool’s losses rose in the year in question - from £19.9m previously to £49.4m. Debt interest charges as a result of the FSG takeover have reduced from £18m to £3m annually £131m was spent in the period on new players including Luis Suarez, Andy Carroll, Jordan Henderson, Stewart Downing, and Charlie Adam. The net spend on players was £41m - as opposed to just under £17m the year previously. Wage costs went up by £10m during the year - reflecting an ageing squad and an issue since addressed, say the club, when ten players left Anfield during the summer (including Emiliano Insua, Christian Poulsen, Paul Konchesky, Philip Degen and Milan Jovanovic). A 25 per cent growth in commercial revenues - up from £62.1m to £77.4m Total club revenue in 2011 fell by just under a million pounds to £183.6m - reflecting the loss of Champions League football this season. Media revenues dropped from £79.6m to £65.3m - again reflecting the loss of Champions League football from TV sources Matchday revenues dropped £2m to £40.9m - again an impact of no Champions league games.
