  1. The Cardiff cup tie presented an opportunity for the players to shake off some of the cobwebs from the 2-week break. I don’t know if the game is too soon for Mo and Sadio after their exploits in Cameroon, but we have some options in the squad now compared to a month ago. Neither covered themselves in glory at the King Power back in December, with Mo missing a penalty and Sadio ballooning a great chance over the bar with the score still goalless. Hopefully, there will be more cohesiveness and tempo about us with the return of Premier League action. On a Thursday. Again. Anyway: Ruthlessness. Energy. Accuracy. Drive. Yer ma. Skill. Audacity. Link-up play. Tenacity. Effervescence. Determination. I don’t ask for much. Last season’s game was a comfortable 3-0 win for the Reds, with Jonny Evans heading into his own net (and predictably cry-arsing about a non-existent foul) before Diogo gave us a 2-0 cushion before half time. Bobby made the game safe late on in the second half, and we were looking pretty good even though we had a few out injured or missing through Covid. The game also saw the team set a new record of 64 home league games unbeaten. During our ultra-successful 1976/77 season, we came up against Leicester at Anfield in early November. Like pretty much everyone else that faced the reigning league and UEFA Cup champions (and future champions of Europe) that year, they were no match for Paisley’s red machine. Frank Worthington, whom Shankly nearly signed for us 4 years earlier, scored for the Foxes but they were dismantled 5-1 thanks to goals from Heighway, Toshack, full backs Neal and Jones, and Keegan. The win gave us a 5-point lead at the top of the table. Again no footage so here's a Guardian match report. The big box office draw in early November 1976 was Charlton Heston-starring thriller Two-Minute Warning. I’d never heard of this film so obviously I haven’t seen it, but the premise seems familiar. A sniper intent on indiscriminate killing during a football (gridiron) game at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. It’s not the Super Bowl but the game in the film is meant to be the same sort of high-profile sporting event. It sounds odd in that the sniper is spotted very early by a camera blimp and even confronted by stadium maintenance staff, but he still manages to stick to his plan. From a quick read-up, the film sounds like it divided opinion hugely, not least because of the subject matter, but also because they never gave the sniper a motivation. Add the fact that he actually managed to unload on the crowd to cause mayhem and you have a film that is a short sharp shock to the system. If any of you have seen it, what did you think? As I said before, it’s unlikely that Mo or Sadio will be involved against Leicester. Mo in particular has played every minute for Egypt at the AFCON as they’ve bored their way to penalties during the knockout stage, and surely he will need a breather. He didn’t get to take a penalty in Yaoundé as Sadio won it for Senegal in the shoot-out having had his penalty saved in the first few minutes of the match. Sadio also needs a breather and time to celebrate Senegal's maiden international trophy. Still, we have options, we should have shaken off some of the rust thanks to the Cardiff match, and it’s all about the right attitude and application. Leicester are there for the taking. Let’s show exactly why that is.
