1. Sorry if this was already posted.... Rafa: I didn't talk to The Sun - Liverpool FC Rafael Benitez today moved quickly to rubbish a report in this morning's Sun claiming he had given an "exclusive" interview to the national newspaper. The Liverpool manager said: "It is important for me to reassure our supporters that I have never spoken exclusively to this newspaper - and never will. "The quotes they used from me are taken from an event I attended yesterday in Spain."
2. The new Milan home one is ace, as is the Barca one. Anyone else know of any other new good ones?
3. Fact. Lucas imrpoved last season with mascherano around the place. Now he is having to work twice as hard with this clown. Meireles looks half decent but how we are gonna miss Mascherano. Poulsen is another example of a 2nd rate player being brought in and it only proves evenm more how much we lack ambition.
4. This post has been bubbling away in my subconscious for ages, and I suppose it was this weekend's England vs Spain game that has finally prodded me into posting it on here. I love defenders. I love defending. There. I've said it. I feel better. Because it appears to have become a dirty word. Being a "good defender". And please, don't see this as a post about Jamie Carragher - who I do think is one of the best defenders to ever play for us, yes, but my all-time favourite Liverpool player (also a defender, coincidentally) was a very different type of beast, Alan Hansen. I read an interview with Xabi in the Sunday Times, and he mentioned his disbelief that acadamy players being interviewed for the programme listed "tackling" as a strength. Now, again, this is one of my favourite Liverpool players, but really? Fuck off. I love tackling. It's fucking brilliant. Watching Didi, Gerrard, Souness, McMahon bashing into players is amazing entertainment. And talking of Spain, I loved seeing Parker diving into Iniesta and Xavi. They looked properly bemused and it was ace. I've had some of best Anfield nights watching Didi Hamann and Sami Hyypia put in some of the greatest defensive displays I've ever seen against Barcelona and Roma. Exhilirating "they shall not pass" defensive masterclasses. And this goes back to my point. Defending. We've all seen on here over the years the usual complaints about certain defensive players not being able to attack. The eulogies for the likes of Rio, Cafu, Maicon, Pique (ignoring his success is partly due to the more agricultural skills of Puyol) and Agger. Ball-playing defenders. Who can "contribute" to the attack. Who "cherish" possession. I blame Barcelona (and to a lesser extent United) for this obssession. And I fucking hate those tippy-tappy tika-taka bellends so much. Because everyone wants to be Barcelona. But unless you have the vast resources, academy system and huge wages that they can afford, nobody can be Barcelona. So don't fucking try. And now onto United. I've read countless posts on here about how United have proved that you don't need to defend, or even have a midfield, to win trophies, because United have shown that all you need is wingers and goals. They've attempted to become Barca-lite. Which only works if you don't have to play Barca, because then you get your arse kicked. Well, that only goes to show that these things are cyclical, because they aren't going to win the title. And Baconface knows that his lack of quality in the middle of the park (even playing his best striker in there to shore up the gaps) is going to cost him. The best team in the Premiership is Man Shitty. A team with a superlative defensive basis, built upon last seasons efforts (when everyone mocked Manicini's efforts to be hard to beat) and hard-working, quality players - who know how to make them a tough team to play against - like Kompany, De Jong, Barry, Toure, Milner. Because great sides always have a good defense, and a quality CM. It's a general rule. It's what you need: a solid platform that allows you to build on that, and then win games. I fucking hate high-scoring draws. I didn't enjoy the 4-4 draw with Arsenal any more than I enjoyed the 4-4 draw with Everton the night before Kenny resigned. That's not football. As Mourinho said once, it's a basketball score. Give me a hard-won 1-0 any day. The best teams in the Premiership have been those teams who can grind out wins when they have to. Who have grit and steel throughout the team. Mourinho's Chelsea. Wenger's early Arsenal teams. What all great teams need is a blend. A mixture of the sublime and the "Row Z". And defenders who can defend are critical. Tackling midfielders who can bark and shout and brutalise opponents are vital. Yes, mix in the fantasy. Give me Luis Garcia, Luis Suarez, Robbie Fowler and Fernando Torres. But also give me Didi Hamann, Steve McMahon and Jamie Carragher. Give me defenders.
5. Liverpool defeated one of their great rivals in their last Barclays Premier League game. Liverpool covered 107.6km in the game against Everton compared to the Toffees 106.4km. Martin Kelly covered more ground than any other Liverpool player with 11.6km while Leiva Lucas had the highest average speed with 5.47mph Jose Enrique is Liverpool’s top ranked player in the EA SPORTS Player Performance Index in 21st place followed by Luis Suarez in 21st place Suarez has now hit 4 goals in the Barclays Premier League, joint 4th in the goal scoring rankings with a shots on target percentage of 57% Leiva Lucas has been anchoring the Liverpool midfield this season and has won 96% of tackles he has attempted so far. With 23 tackles won he is ranked 6th in the category in the EA SPORTS Player Performance Index Manchester United made it 6 wins out of 7 games with a 2-0 victory over Norwich in the last round of games United have 4 players in the top 10 in the EA SPORTS Player Performance Index. Wayne Rooney remains in top spot with midfield duo Oliveira Anderson and Ashley Young in 3rd and 4th place respectively United covered 122.9km in the game against Norwich with Darren Fletcher once again covering the most ground with 12.2km, while Ji-Sung Park showed typical industry in a rare Premier League start by covering the second highest amount of ground with 11.98km Wayne Rooney remains the Premier League’s top goal scorer with 9 goals this season. Rooney has had an incredible 32 attempts at goal this season, one every 18 minutes, getting 59% on target Nani has been a revelation for Manchester United this season. He is their top passer with 185 passes, one every 3 minutes 22 seconds and also the EA SPORTS Player Performance Index’s top dribbler having completed 32 dribbles. He is also ranked second in the Index for delivering crosses with 29 this season, just 1 behind Damien Duff who has 30 Ashley Young’s stats are another great example of United’s delightful attacking football this season, completing a pass in his opponent’s half every 4 minutes 24 seconds, completing 30 dribbles, and delivering 25 crosses Rooney has gone on the record recently as saying that United are now defending from the front like Barcelona, and the stats show he is right. Rooney, Nani, and Young have won 6, 9 and 5 tackles respectively this season. This is especially impressive when you compare it to cross city rivals Aguero and Dzeko who have each won just one tackle.
6. Penciled in at the bottom of this article: Let's be more attacking now, says Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard | Football | guardian.co.uk Steven Gerrard has called on Liverpool to show more adventure in their quest for a top-four finish and Europa League triumph that would, according to manager Rafael Benítez, erase the disappointments of this campaign. Liverpool advanced into the last 16 of the Europa League on Thursday night with a 3-1 win over Unirea Urziceni in Bucharest and set up a meeting with the French side Lille. It was the first time in five months that Benítez's team have scored more than two goals in a game and was also notable for the 33rd European goal of Gerrard's Liverpool career, taking him clear of Alan Shearer in the list of all-time British goalscorers in continental competition. Victory in Romania came at a price for Liverpool, who yesterday confirmed Martin Skrtel suffered a broken metatarsal against Unirea and will also be without his fellow central defender, Sotirios Kyrgiakos, due to suspension against Blackburn Rovers tomorrow. The length of Skrtel's absence is still to be determined. But Gerrard believes the improvement in Liverpool's attacking edge at the Steaua Stadium has set a standard the team must continue to meet to secure qualification for next season's Champions League. "It was slightly worrying that we were not creating enough chances in recent matches," admitted the Liverpool captain. "But that's what made the performance against Unirea so pleasing. Now we've got to get the balance right between now and the end of the season. We've got to be good defensively but have a bit of bottle and be a bit risky in the final third as well. You have got to keep making chances." Gerrard said he is gradually returning to form after an injury-plagued campaign. "I've suffered injuries at bad times and when I have been coming back from injuries, my form hasn't clicked straight away. But I can see signs that it is coming back," said the midfielder, who will captain England in the friendly against Egypt next week. "The target now is to try and win the Europa League and finish fourth. That would be a bit of a nice way to finish a disappointing season." On paper Liverpool have an inviting Premier League run-in and with Fernando Torres returning from injury, albeit expected to start only on the bench against Blackburn, plus Yossi Benayoun fit again, Benítez is confident of delivering another strong finale to achieve fourth place. The Liverpool manager said: "We are normally strong towards the end of the season. If we can finish in the top four and do well in the Europa League then maybe things earlier in the season will be forgotten easier." Benítez reiterated his belief that pre-season expectations on Liverpool bore no relation to the financial reality of a club that spent only what it raised through player sales last summer. He said: "We know it has not been the best season but that is because the expectations from some people were too high anyway. That's the main difference for me. But if we can improve now, and end up in the top four, it will have been a very good achievement – even more so if we stay in the Europa League to the end. "People do have short memories and if we can finish well, it can all change. People think of one game, or maybe just two or three and no more, but that is normal in football now. When you have been in Europe for a long while, like we have, we know you just have to keep going and working hard." Liverpool have appointed Manchester City's former head of communications, Paul Tyrrell, as their new head of press
7. who in your opinion is liverpools best player this season you can only pick one
8. Remember not too long ago when we used to groan whenever these two names popped up on the teamsheet together? It was mostly the odd Europa league game and it was taken as a guarantee of a lifeless, boring match. What the hell has happened to basically make these two guys our first choice deep midfield pair (Gerrard arguably aside)? Is it Spearing's drastic personal improvement- especially his range of passing? Is it Lucas' increasing dependability? Or is it the shift in our style to an aggressive pressing game with a fluid midfield and an emphasis on pass and move? Tactics? Form? Kenny's motivational talents? Whatever the cause it's amazing how solid this pairing has become. Even a month or two ago, it seemed clear that CM was a priority position for summer reinforcement. I no longer think that it is.
9. I fucking hate him. Anyone who thinks he is even a decent squad player knows fuck all about football IMHO. And that includes Dalglish. I am sick to high heaven of paying money to watch this lazy cunt. Pass and move... my fucking arse. Stands still all fucking game, gets caught in possession nearly every time time he has it cos he is so fucking slow both physically and mentally. I here people say he's doing exactly what he's being told, well if being told is Standing next to the defence sometimes behind them.... Spend to long with the ball mixed up detween his feet then getting caught in possession.. Passing the ball and then standing still Never ever being creative Giving free kicks away Offerering nothing what so ever to a winner team Then I say he is doing exactly what he is being told... but some how I don't think he is being told to do this. Last week against Chelsea, he got caught in possession by Drogba (I think) that could have led to a goal He could not move his hand away from an on coming ball that if H. Webb was ref would have been a pen. Thats how slow his reactions are. Yesterday, first half he got caught in possession that could have led to a goal. He is worse that Phil fucking Babb How much longer do we have to put up with utter shite like lucas?
10. He was like that, then Rafa happened. Fucks sakes..
11. The two must incompetent players I've seen play for this club in recent memory although rivalled by djimi traore. I think Roy took comfort in these two inferior beings, they could be scapegoated. Obviously we need to get rid as soon as possible along with a good few others. Realistically we won't even get half of what we payed for these clowns. What do you think Kenny will do with these two
12. He's been class the past 2 games. Very positive in his play and looks very determined. He was loving it at the end of the match yesterday.

15. Poulsen got 0 out of 6 after his performance against Portugal yesterday. That translates to "find another sport". The second worst player got 2. Morten Olsen, the Denmark boss, wont rule out taking the captancy away from him either. Thank you Roy.
16. First home game under new ownership, will hopefully bring the first win in the league for 2 months. Any score will do. AGENDA: League Game 9/38: v Blackburn (h) KO: 14:00 GMT/15:00 Local 24 October Host Broadcaster: BBC Sport TV/Web: Satellites/Streams A win takes us out of the drop zone and on the road to recovery.
17. Released today. Are my eyes deceiving me or have they actually had this photo taken at Anfield rather than the usual photo shop job? Bigger version What a bunch of miserable fuckers though!
18. The ball has yet to touch the floor at the Brit.... I won't deny though I always watch Stoke if they're on as I get a perverse amusement from watching other teams try and deal with them.
19. Here's how it could have happened. (Actually, apart from the bits in italics, here's how it did happen.) **************************************************** Summer 2007 was a busy transfer season for the Reds. In addition to the "big name" signings of Babel, Benayoun and Torres (and a protracted and unsuccessful pursuit of Gabriel Heinze) Rafa Benitez brought in a host of promising young players, including Nemeth, Leto, Plessis, Gulasci and Pacheco. Perhaps the most intriguing - certainly the most expensive - of the youngsters was the 20 year old Lucas Pezzini Leiva from Gremio. The captain of Brazil's victorious under-20s and the youngest ever winner of the Brazilian league's Player of the Year Award was a mouthwatering prospect. Of course, breaking into "the best midfield in the world" was always going to take time and patience, on behalf of both Lucas and the Liverpool fans. In his first season, he was a useful squad player and his appearances were mainly as a sub or to allow Rafa to "rotate" the senior midfielders. Nevertheless, one match in his debut season cemented his place as an Anfield cult hero. After coming on as a substitute at Goodison, Lucas's goal-bound shot secured the derby victory for the Reds, despite Phil Neville's desperate attempts to stop the ball with his hand. Later that season, the first Brazilian to score for the Reds registered his first Anfield goal, with a 25-yard curler against Havant & Waterlooville. The arrival of Javier Mascherano a month later made Lucas' job even more challenging, as there were now three genuinely world-class central midfielders ahead of him in the Anfield pecking order. Nevertheless, the young Brazilian stayed focused on his task, committed to the club and willing to do anything the manager required of him. In Summer 2008 he travelled to Beijing, where he won an Olympic Bronze medal as a key member of the Brazilian side. 2008/09 was an unforgettable season for Reds fans and a pivotal one in the club's history. Lucas was restricted to just 39 appearances (including substitute appearances), due to the imperious form of Mascherano and Alonso. Highlights included important contributions to the 5-1 demolition of Newcastle and the unforgettable 4-1 victory at Old Trafford. With the unswervingly loyal support of the Kop, the youngster's confidence grew throughout the season. This was reflected in his more adventurous play - shots from distance and runs into the box - which helped the Reds to edge past stubbornly defensive visitors Fulham and Stoke City, en route to a title-winning tally of 90 points. The following season was an anti-climax, as the Reds struggled to repeat their earlier form, largely due to the failure to replace Xabi Alonso (or to adapt to his departure). For Lucas, costly errors against Wigan and Everton frustrated many Reds fans. Nevertheless, he continued his development, racking up more starts than in the previous seasons and being voted the Liverpool fans' Young Player of the Season. The highlight of the otherwise-disappointing year was his goal-scoring Man of the Match performance against Benfica. His improved consistency has been rewarded with a recall to the senior Brazilian squad. This season, the new manager has continued to show faith in Lucas: a faith which was rewarded with a dynamic and goalscoring cameo appearance against Steaua Bucharest. Blessed with tremendous natural talent (and hailed by some of the players as the most technically gifted member of the squad) and an unswerving loyalty to the club, Lucas has all the attributes to develop into an Anfield legend: not least because he enjoys the recognition and support of the best supporters in the world - and he never gets booed, moaned at or written off by bitching shitwits, haters, whingers and cocks.
20. Time to move away from the wave of gloom and doom of Sunday, and back to creature comforts as the European run continues against Steaua. It's the last home game in Europe for 7 weeks, so hopefully we'll get a decent crowd, and a decent send off before the trip to the shithole on Sunday. AGENDA: Europa League Group K Game 1/6: v Steaua Bucharest (h) KO: 19:05 GMT/20:05 Local 16 September Host Broadcaster: Channel 5 Sport UK Yes we're on the reserve channel, but at least not stuck on a flimsy red button, as other teams are in Europe this week. All gifts......
