So the first one is nearly upon us. Unlike some, i can't wait for it. Everton haven't got out of 2nd gear yet, and whilst we are hardly tearing up trees - nothing gets the blood pumping more than a chance to shove it up the bitters in their own wooden hole. So what do we think? Gerrard from the start? Kuyt or Bellamy have to start this as were going to need experienced heads amongst all the young lads. I'd keep Carroll in, he nearly got the monkey off his back yesterday - and he's gonna need a run of games to get full match sharpness and to appease the media and fans who have already made up their minds about him - scoring the winner at Woodison wouldn't be a bad way to kick-start his season. Think we'll have 'em 1-2. Edit : I appreciate it might be a bit early for a match thread... but meh. Its the derby and i dont care

The Manic Street Preachers album, that is. What do you people think of it? It had something indescribably dark and not quite of this world about it that I've never heard anywhere else and don't think I will hear ever again. The kind of thing very few bands ever achieve. Nevertheless, it frustrates me every time I listen to it as some of the songs just sound half-finished and makes me think that, what is IMO a really great album could have been the greatest of all time. Unbelieveable that it's been that long. I was in Forbidden Planet in Bold Street after uni when I first heard Bush on the radio. When I went home and watched the towers fall I just couldn't take it in. We've all seen grim shit in our time what with 24 hour news being the way it is, but I've still never seen anything that sickens and shocks me as much as the sight of people jumping out of the world trade centre, as far as psychologically disturbing shit goes, it was on a whole different scale to what I'd seen before. Was reading the other day though that Steve Buscemi went to volunteer with his old firefighter colleagues in the aftermath, I thought that was ace, and no doubt one of many stories like that dotted around. The sight of the priest Mychal Judge being carried out of the rubble too, never fails to put a lump in my throat. Warning! The following content is NOT WORK SAFE. Click the Show button to reveal. Anyone catch this? Docu on BBC3 and is on Iplayer. Only seen the first one, so im guessing it is a different regiment each week. Tells the story of our guys in Afghanistan with a lot of footage captured on helmet cams. Not to everyone's taste, but well worth a watch. BBC iPlayer - Our War: Ambushed

"It's awful she's been kidnapped, but for me it's been very upsetting and obviously for my family, my friends" Or put another way: "How much money can I get for this?" Fuck off love. Someone pinched your picture from facebook where you placed it on public view and used it in their blog. At least have the guts to say you're going to sue someone rather than plead how terribly upset you are by the unwanted publicity ON FUCKING NEWSNIGHT.

This could be me and a prof of my incompetence, but is the great "Recommend me some music" - thread lost? If so it`s a shame as that is probably the thread that has given me most joy here in the GF. Well anyway as an attempt to remedy I will try to start a new one.. Anything goes; new, old, pop, rock, funk, jazz, blues whatever. As long as you honestly feel that spreading it will cause joy and euphoria for someone else.. I will start of with this and hope you find it to you`re liking, I know I do. From Popbitch: A Newcastle FC insider made an interestingclaim to us. The story goes that while manager Alan Pardew draws a relatively lowbasic salary, he stands to earn much bigger amounts in bonuses based around the profit he makes for the club on player sales. Which would have made Andy Carroll's 35m transfer rather goodbusiness. And Jose Enrique's imminenttransfer to Man Utd or Liverpool morelikely than the "fantastic new contract"said to be on offer.

Prompted by a facebook discussion about Coachella, a thread about your expectations in life and whether you feel you have achieved them or ever will. Ever since my late teens I've had this huge urge to travel and see the world and maybe even try my chances at living in another country but the older I get the more distant it seems. I keep thinking I'm a victim of circumstance (mostly of my own creation) but I start to wonder if I'm just kidding myself. I made a career decision at 16 that meant I was going to be in education/training for the next decade; this was (and still is) absolutely what I want, my determination to be an architect has never been higher and hopefully in 6 months time I'll achieve that. I have a job I enjoy and that has helped me get qualified; with the state of the industry I've been grateful to hold on to a job for so long and with a company that I could have a long term future with. I've been telling myself that I'll get qualified and then go off and travel and try other things before coming back to it but then the world went to shit and I keep telling myself I'm lucky to have a job and when there are so few jobs in the countries I want to move to what am I going to do? Then there's my personal life, I moved in with the girlfriend just under a year ago and it's easily the best thing I ever did. Now we're thinking that whilst we have a bit of money we should do the sensible thing and buy a house and all of a sudden I'm in my mid-twenties and I'm thinking of buying a house and a dog and settling in Sheffield wondering what the hell happened to those travel ambitions. I really want to move to Vancouver and a couple of years ago we both decided that's what we wanted to do when the other half moved from Lincoln to Sheffield she decided she already missed her family too much so moving abroad was out. Now we seem to have both settled for buying a house and then having longer holidays but I'm not sure it'll ever be enough for me, I certainly don't want to regret it in my later years. Anyway, this probably seems like a self-pitying woo is me scenario but it really isn't. Life is pretty rosy, and not everybody can say that. I think I'm impatient as much as anything and I think I set out with inflated expectations of what I should get from the world; it seems so many of my generation thought that their ambition in life should be to go back-packing through the trails of South America. In a very long winded way I guess I'm saying that I had such aspirations and still don't know whether I'll achieve them but if I don't then I don't think I'll be disappointed with the way things turn out. What about everyone else, have you given up on your great expectations?

Right, I'm going on an Amazon spree shortly, and I need some new material. I've pretty much read everything that my favourite authors have written, and since some of them are dead, or take about 100 years to write books, there isn't going to be anything new for a while. So, I thought I'd list (some of) my favourite authors, and the clever clogs of the GF can peruse the list and perhaps recommend me some similar stuff, by different authors. Yeah? Cormac McCarthy, Denis Johnson, Craig Clevenger, Stephen King, Sam Lipsyte, Bret Easton Ellis, James Ellroy, Chuck Palahniuk, JG Ballard, Jim Thompson, Peter Straub, Niall Griffiths, Ryu Murakami, Tim Willocks, Don DeLillo, Jonathan Lethem, Don Winslow. That's a snapshot of the sort of stuff I like. Any ideas?

Ok so the Louis Theroux programme last night had me thinking. A black Chap, dont know his name, lets call him Dave was in Jail for allegedly killing three people. He claims that he was in his house asleep at the time of the killings. It was pretty obvious however that through Louis talking to him that he had killed the 3. Now Dave, if found guilty will be facing the death penalty. A just sentence for the crime? (this however is not my point or would rather it not discussed too much as we have done capital punishment to death already) Now in prison Louis and him spoke and he had applied himself to write 5 novels. He had sent all these to I think his partner to get the copy righted for publishing. He said that he reads the dictionary and learns 5 new words daily. He had educated himself with all that he pretty much knew. Through the interview, Dave advised that he was brought up by his Grandma as his Dad was a gangster and would only turn up to discipline him (by hand) if he had been naughty and his mum was a prostitute hooked on crack. Dave now is 31 and still really has his life ahead of him. But say turn the clock back 25 years and there are many more Dave's just like him all over the world in the same situations. Surely we as human beings have a responsibilty to shape these young people'e lives. All this guy knew was what he saw so thats what was going to be shown in his own actions. Yeah there are hundreds of the same individuals who dont go on to be murderers in the same position, but we have a responsibility for educating the the next generation. Right? Discuss.........

Some of the tackling has been brutal, not the greatest game ever in an attacking sense but thoroughly entertaining still. Munster currently leading Leinster 12-9.
