  1. A Saturday 3pm kick-off? Rarer than hens' teeth. It's our first home game in about a month so there has been plenty of time for the contractors to get cracking on the expanded ARE's foundations as well as fill the lower tier with rail seating. Now we have some home games coming up, the work will now take place around the fixtures much like when the Main Stand was redeveloped. Anyway: Solidity. Tactical nous. Energy. Audacity. Life. Yer ma. Exuberance. Ruthlessness. Control. Heart. Invention. Poise. Strength. I don't ask for much. Last season's fixture came during that period where we were forced to play Fab and/or Hendo at the back, weakening the midfield and blunting the attack. Brighton came away with the points and looked the better side for large parts. Ali was also missing for this one. Stand-in keeper Queef could do little to stop the only goal scored by Steven Alzate. I hadn't heard of him before that game and I had to look up the goalscorer in order to mention it here, because he hasn't figured very much this season either. We met Brighton at Anfield towards the end of September 1980. We were defending league champions and would go on to win our maiden League Cup as well as Big Ears for the third time. In the league though, a combination of injuries and various stalwarts approaching the point where Sir Bob could see they were on the wane meant that we were off the pace. Villa and Ipswich would go on to contest the title, with Ron Saunders' Brummies coming out on top. That same team would win the European Cup the following year even though Saunders had left by then. Anyway, Alan Mullery's Brighton squad contained a few future Liverpool names. Lawro played alongside Steve Foster with Foster's headband making up the central defensive unit. They also had Ireland international Michael Robinson up front, who was an all-rounder forward well capable of getting goals and being a nuisance. The match was a one-sided affair with 2 goals for Souey, one from reigning Footballer Of The Year Terry Mac plus a fourth by Der Ginger Bomber. The two midfielders had been in cracking goalscoring form in 1980/81. Brian Horton got Brighton's sole reply with a late penalty but Liverpool were full value for the points. All 2 of them, as this was the last season where it was 2 points for a win. No video again, so here's a match report. The film atop the box office in late September 1980 is the one that stopped Raging Bull and Martin Scorsese from walking off with the Oscars for Best Picture and Best Director. Ordinary People was the directorial debut of Robert Redford and starred Donald Sutherland and Mary Tyler Moore. It's basically about the fallout following the accidental death of a family's son and the attempted suicide of the other as a consequence. I have never actually seen this film so I don't know if Scorsese's boxing classic was genuinely robbed, but reviews suggest it was at the very least worthy of award nominations. It's still judged to be a top film more than 40 years later. Brighton got 4 points from us last season thanks to that early-2021 slump, as well as a shit VAR decision in the last minute to get a penalty and claim an equaliser at the Amex. We'd been robbed of a goal for Mo earlier in that game thanks to more VAR shenanigans deeming him to be offside after spending an age deciding how they wanted to rule that goal out. They are well organised and are not particularly direct, which makes them hard to beat but means they don't often do enough at the other end either. We have the tools to redress the balance of last season and then some, because we have exceptional people in our squad, not merely ordinary people. Prepare well, have the right focus, do what we know we can do, and get it done.
