Apologies if this has been posted elsewhere, but haven't seen it. Liverpool to upgrade Anfield in effort to compete with Manchester United - SportsPro Media Liverpool to upgrade Anfield in effort to compete with Manchester United 25 September 2009 | By Adam Fraser 1,000 seats at Anfield, the home of English soccer club Liverpool, will be converted into a corporate area as the club's owners, Tom Hicks and George Gillett, seek to maximise revenues from the stadium while they remain unable to finance a move to a new ground. The plans, first reported in The Guardian newspaper, would significantly increase the club's matchday revenues, one of the key targets of the club's management. The club's matchday revenues totalled £39.2 million last season, according to Deloitte, while, by comparison, Manchester United earned £101.5 million and Arsenal £94.6 million. Even Chelsea, like Liverpool seeking a move to a new stadium, earned £74.5 million. * Stanley Park stadium and Tom Hicks win praise * Standard Chartered explain backing of club with 'huge following' It is the Manchester United revenues that draw closest comparison since, despite United's greater success over the last two decades, the two clubs are unquestionably England's most famous, and come from similar areas; both Chelsea and Arsenal can take advantage of a generally higher cost of living in London. Liverpool and its owners are keen to move to a new stadium in an effort to up those revenues, but that has been delayed due to financing difficulties. The latest statement from the club refused to put a date on a potential move other than to say it would be completed before the 2018 World Cup. * Liverpool FC: The world's 27th most valuable sports property The club has at least managed to match Manchester United in one area: earlier this month Liverpool signed a shirt sponsorship deal with Standard Chartered on a par with their rivals' contract with Aon. Less and less for those shelling out their £40.
