Anyone sum this up for me?

    Man on internet says something.

Other man on internet says something else.

Another man on internet likes what man says but not what the other man says.

Yet another man, who likes the man but not the other man, says that another man should not be saying such things about the man.

    Repeat the above ad infinitum.

    Stronts gets negged.

  2. The most liklely cause is unauthorised or insufficiently engineered alterations. If they were in or around the core, it would not take a great deal of change of loading to dramatically alter the stresses on the structure. Once one component fails, it trasfers the load to adjacent components and if these have not been engineered for such a load it also fails until such times as it reaches the catastrophic failure point which is when the whole lot comes down.

There is a phrase oft used in modern building structures "add lightness". This is what happens when you get it wrong.

As with the majority of these disasters, the people making wrong decisions are never the victims of these poor chioces.

  3. I am not from Liverpool so can only comment on what I see as an outsider.

I remember the last time I visited the city with @Jennings. I bored him shitless wittering on about the architecture of the buildings in the city centre. There are some truly stunning buildings there and the whole of the city has an air of industry and purpose about it.

Some cities have a feel of claustrophobia and an unwelcome aura (Manchester is one, Peterborough another) but I never feel anything other than relaxed and a little bit in awe of the scale of the docks when I am in Liverpool.

There is a serious danger of the city going the way of Glasgow Clydeside in that it could be swallowed up by spreadsheet developers trading industrial heritage for Brise Soleil bedecked, glazed and powder coated aluminium clad monstrosities. I do hope it doesn't as I Love the city.

  4. Have they accepted liability in terms that are unambiguous Dave? Might sound a silly question but they can be very slippery.

If so I would collate the series of events with timelines and send them in the form of a letter (include all your evidence including their offer).  Inform them of any hardships or inconvenience the delay is causing you (be specific and factual) and send it to them stating that they have 7 days from the date of the letter to provide a satisfactory resolution or you will refer it to the FOS. (https://www.financial-ombudsman.org.uk/businesses/complaints-deal/insurance/home-buildings-insurance/accidental-damage).

I cannot guarantee this will work mate as I do not know the wording of your policy but it might prompt a response to move it forward.

    Good luck.

    Thanks for the reply.

Yeah three times I've asked but basically they're refusing or extremely reluctant to quote specifics, adamant that everything they have quoted for will need doing including some level of wall repair or re-plastering, despite earlier suggesting it was just a maybe.  Not impressed as this was not my experience with them last time.

They're currently very in demand, as are many trades at the moment, so starting to feel like the job is not big enough for them.  Real shame when you lose faith in someone you've used before.

(I need to learn how to multi-quote)

That's disappointing if they have done work for you before.

It is a sellers market at the moment and most tradesmen have very full order books ( working from home has led a lot of homeowners wanting alterations). Add that to the usual spring renewal frenzy and it's the perfect storm for anyone looking for building work to be done.

Not helpful I know, but would perhaps explain why a previously reliable and cost effective tradesman is suddenly not as helpful.

Anyone had any bathroom/tiling work done recently?  Or any bathroom fitters on here?

Just wondering what I should expect to pay to have my shower cubicle de-tiled, re-tiled, sealed and a new shower fitted?

The wall area to be tiled is 7 m2.

I've had a quote off a company I've used before for plumbing work and like them so was a bit gutted they've come in much more expensive than I thought they had led me to believe, but it could have been a misunderstanding.

I'd be supplying the shower which they'd fit to the existing connections, and they'd re-fit the existing shower tray and doors.  They'd only be supplying the wet wall (which I understand is more expensive than tiles and there'd be a bit of wastage cos of the inbetweeny size).

So I get the cost for for materials, but £1000 for labour?  Not sure how many days work it would be, and let's just say I've not dealt before with the particular person who's prepared the quote and I've found them to be a bit vague throughout, whereas when I've used them before they were more clear in every respect.  So I've lost a bit of confidence in them unfortunately.

Any advice would be much appreciated, ta.

(edit, just to say by the time I've bought the shower the total cost will be pushing £2k to refurb only the shower cubicle)

Ask them for a detailed breakdown of the costs and the sums involved in each element of the works. It it transpires that there is a contingency for items which may not be required then ask them to agree to them being deducted from the final bill. Get it in writing !!

    Schitts Creek - Netflix

We're just starting the fourth season. Absolutely awesome. Top performances across the cast. Tramples the death rattle of latter AbFab episodes into the dust.

    10/10

The characters are brilliantly written. One of the most enjoyable series i have seen on Netflix.

Anyone who has not seen it or has just started watching it I implore you to schtick with it as the gradual unravelling of the casts characters and the challenges they each face will pay off.

Jocelyn is the dictionary definition of a MILF.

Schitts Creek has a huge following and has become a cult classic with conventions all over the place (not recently obviously).

If you don't want to vote Lib Dem, that's your business, but it should be for a real reason. PR was never, ever on the table during coalition discussions. It was always a non-starter, and even getting the halfway house of alternative vote took a major effort.

Arguably they should have walked away unless they got PR, but it would have looked like putting party concerns/obsessions over the "national interest". A no-win situation, essentially.

My apologies for not having a reason which you find acceptable. Must try harder!

I cannot be the only one who was first drawn to the Lib Dems in the belief that PR was a real thing and was achievable in my lifetime. The continued rise in Lib Dem numbers must surely have been partly as a consequence of this belief?

It seems irrelevant given the decimation inflicted on a party I used to believe in, but, the "no win situation" argument holds little water with me, and for the party to delude themselves that they had no choice but to agree to a referendum on something people barely understood in exchange for austerity light explains why there is little likelihood of a revival in fortunes soon.

Which would you have preferred Stronts - austerity light or PR and which would have benefited the nation more?

Really they should be two separate parties, and under a PR system they would be, and we probably wouldn't have a Tory government. But FPTP forces everyone into big tents, and this tent is bursting at the seams.

Could not agree more which is the single biggest reason I will never vote Lib Dem again (having done so in the past).

Clegg had the ideal opportunity to change politics and representation of the ordinary working man when he agreed to a coalition with the Tories by insisting on PR as part of his agreement. He sold out and agreed to a pathetic compromise of the alternative vote fiasco.

Having listened to and admired a lot of what Paddy Ashdown had to say regarding electoral reform, I genuinely thought Clegg would take his chance. He bottled it and destroyed his party doing so.

I live in a Tory stronghold (John Major ex MP) and felt genuinely dejected voting yesterday as I knew nothing would change no matter who I voted for. They could put a blue Rosette on a bin bag down here and sell it to the electorate on the on a manifesto of clearing up the rubbish and it would still get elected.

    Nah I disagree.

The British public have had over ten years to see and understand what the Tory party are all about. They've seen the library closures, the layoffs, the food banks, they saw and hear the lies of Johnson, yet they doubled down and gave him a massive majority, they'd do the same again tomorrow.

Johnson isn't a trickster who's slithered his way into high office, he's a known quantity and people embrace him anyway.

Why? Who knows, decades of celebrity television and exalting ignorance as something to be proud of, social media, dwindling attention spans, no longer valuing people for what they bring to the table morally and ethically, only financially, a whole slew of things.

The tyranny of a prince in an oligarchy is not so dangerous to the public welfare as the apathy of a citizen in a democracy.

  11. Used to eat loads of these as a kid. Local shop did them 3 for 5p when I was a nipper. Stopped eating them when I got barred for stuffing 3 packs of custard creams up my jumper and thinking no one would notice. Got a double kicking for that from Bob the shop owner and me mum.

Occasionally you would get a packet which had loads of the "gammon" seasoning on them which actually made them resemble the colour on the front of the packet. Eating a pack of them made you glow in the dark and cause radio noise.

    Happy days!

Transitioning over to vegan again and been getting into finding ways to use barely as I love the stuff.

For anyone who misses the taste of meat try cooking some barley up in these stock cubes. Veggie/vegan friendly and there is definitely a strong meaty(lamb) taste. Really nice stock, add some other bits and cook it up as a broth for Soba noodles aswell. If you can't be arsed to marinade any tofu just cook up some Shitake mushroom, throw in the cauldron marinaded tofu for a few second and slice some spring onion to go on top of the broth and soba

Don't think about adding any extra stock cube for a more intense flavour the salt will ruin it. Just add dried mushrooms to stock

Try these. Vegan Oxo Cubes. Game changers.

Yes it is. We need to already start learning lessons for the next one. We've had 5 in two decades, so we'll be having more. We need an organised, funded and coordinated global response.

Whhhooooaaa steady on there lad, bit much to ask is it not.

Lets continue to do what we have done to date: organise, properly fund and coordinate. You can have any 2 of those 3 but not all.
