I see the sense in a short contract extension for Matip from a point of squad balance and harmony and to give Quansah another season to see how high the ceiling is with him but the danger of that is that at some point Matip has to play and he’s not very good at that anymore. I’d sooner sign a dm who can drop in like Fabinho did.

I think that’s definitely the profile we should be looking at and speculative bids in the summer suggest we’re willing to push the boat out and take somewhat of a risk in attaining the right player for that role. I’d love to see us go balls out in the summer and add Wirtz to the mix. He’d be the guy I’d throw any potential Mo money at. Once Mo goes team will need adapting anyway so a no10 might be fruitful to have in the mix.

As a rule we don’t really sign these players though do we. They’re either a signed a few years younger whilst still cheap enough or a few years later when they’ve had a couple of years of first team football. It’d certainly be a sensible way of adding to what is a fairly balanced yet slightly short on numbers squad though.

If Phillips and Williams aren’t even good enough for the SPL we should probably think about selling them to the dog food factory. Inacio could be one we move early for if he’s a serious target although aren’t Real serious contenders to sign him? Given that Endo is pretty much doing what we bought him to do and Thiago is still on the books I don’t see us signing a midfielder.

Salah only goes if he wants to or the money offered for him lets us have a serious shot at replacing/rebuilding. I say rebuilding because I think without Salah we have a pretty misfit bunch of forwards who don’t particularly look like a unit of forwards of which we’re used to. A bunch of fine individuals. That said, Salah has shown that even as his pace drops off he has way more to his game. That threaded pass with the outside of his foot is a thing of beauty. He’s clearly not motivated by money otherwise he wouldn’t settle for Jadon Sancho money he’d be chasing the Ronaldo/Messi paycheque. So if he wants to stay I say fuck Stacksy and extend!
