  1. I remember this game and it was one that springs to mind that helped me form the opinion that Jennings was the best goalie ever to play against us. Played on an early kick off on Grand National day I think.
  2. This is why I'm against it even for goal line tech (even though I earlier said, and with hindsight now probably wish I hadn't, I'd be in favour if it removes mistakes as bad as Dowds.) The two points you make above sometimes overlap. Remember Ukraine V England during the Euros? Ukraine "scored" a goal but it wasn't given as neither the ref nor linesman thought it had crossed the line. Goal line tech would have meant the goal would have been awarded after all but, what about the fact a Ukraine player was miles offside earlier in the move? So if it had existed for that game, it would actually have helped a goal to be awarded that shouldn't have stood for a different reason, because judging offsides wasn't part of the technology remit at the time. This scenario, had it happened, is one example of why, after it has been introduced, it will spread to other aspects of the game and won't stop at identifying whether a ball has crossed the goal line or not. I also think the game has managed well enough without it for nearly a century and a half and, it's only the advent of endless televised games that has turned it in to such a big issue. So in a way the introduction of any technology is pandering to the wishes of the Sky generation. I know full well not everyone will agree with that but, that's the way I see it.
  3. I agree with what Dave says in his final paragraph. I too have never been in favour of the use of technology and, I'm probably still not if we are talking about the sort of things most seem to want it for. But if it can remove refereeing mistakes so bad they will have people wondering about corruption, then sadly I'd have to say I'm now in favour of it. I don't actually think there's any corruption like but, in situations like that, you can see why some might be asking questions along those lines. The game doesn't just have to be straight, it has to be seen to be straight.
  4. Twas ever thus. They used to chant "What's our name?" Then some others would reassuringly respond with "Everton!"
  5. Errr, I believe the expression is.....arf! :D It's only the last few weeks we've even had the central heating on, going all the way back to about early May. And we STILL owe them!
  6. This time last year we were so much in credit they sent us a cheque for nearly £200 which obviously came in handy just before Christmas. About 3 weeks ago we got a statement off them telling us we were nearly £300 in credit, no offer of a refund this time cos we pay a fixed amount each month and you're supposed to be in credit at the start of winter. Which was fair enough but we were debating if we should ask as that did seem to be a bit too much in credit. Anyway, they told us to send in our own meter readings just to make sure as nobody had been out to do it for a while. The amended statement said we were actually £17 in debt - at the start of winter! So we went from apparently being £300 in credit to being £17 in debt all because they used some set of bollocks stats or other. We are with EDF, the one everyone gets mixed up with a certain racist organisation. We were thinking of changing to that Ovo as several people have said they are cheaper than the other big ones. Looking at their on line site, the figures they show on there suggest there's barely any difference. So they are ALL cunts!
  7. And so began what was to become a Liverpool tradition of signing the only Dutch forwards in history with no first touch and no discernible levels of skill. Oh and no redeeming qualities whatsoever in Babel's case. This from a country where even the goalies have more natural footballing ability than the average English midfielder. ;)
  8. Hitting the first man at corners and advanced set pieces has become like a plague, spreading not just among our players (Coutinho being the latest example at Arsenal) but everywhere else too. You even see it far too often when watching both foreign club football and even international football. At first I said the following to my mate joking but, I'm wondering if we really should fine our players every time they do it. No I don't mean anything punitive, I'm talking about a small token amount of maybe a tenner for first team squad players and a fiver for others, proceeds to be donated to various local charities. Just something to maybe focus minds because there's no excuse for it and, especially when we are chasing the game, it's frustrating as fuck. Or if not fines, maybe a pre-designated fan, let's for arguments sake say - me, be allowed to run on and punch them whenever they do it. Sorted in no time. ;)
  9. It's a long time ago so I could be wrong but, I'm not sure he was a left back when we signed him. What was then called left half maybe? And if so, I think he might have played a handful of games for the reserves in that position. I'm getting distant, but very vague memories of him being a pig farmer at one stage too. Or was that just Evertonian rumours? He bothered them enough that they went to the trouble of making a banner which was displayed in the Anfield Rd End one particular derby day which said "Lindsay Is A Turkey". Had a great left foot anyway.
  10. I thought the curves were put there as some sort of condition of them being allowed to host world cup games in 1966? Though saying that, they still could have applied those conditions for the reason you say.
  11. Different kind of memory I've got for that match. It was me Dad's works kids Christmas party and I didn't want to go, not that I would have been at that particular match but, I didn't want to be distracted from following it on the radio. But mainly in order to keep my younger brother company, I was more or less forced to attend. Have to say it was fucking brilliant! Tbf, these were good, enjoyable events anyway for kids our age and this one was the best yet. They kept announcing the score as the goals went in and the place was going absolutely berserk, both kids and adults. Mad celebrations from us Reds and gasps of disbelief from the Blues. As said, they had the last laugh, not just with winning the league, but also with a comfortable 2-0 win at Anfield.
  12. Pfft. Feel sorry for him if this is an example of the way his articles MIGHT be received. That piece was more positive and pro Liverpool than I suspect we'd see from many actual Liverpool fans. Can't imagine what would have been said if he'd of slaughtered us.
  13. The most surprising aspect of his Wolves career up to now, is that Mick McCarthy didn't knock the cunt out when he came in to the dressing room and completely undermined his manager's credibility in front of the whole team. And this Morgan/Bettison thing is at the very least, sick. The worst case scenario is that it's actually a bit sinister.
  14. I don't think he was a very nice person away from football, in fact I suppose he wasn't that nice on the pitch either, deffo not to other players anyway. Maybe he just wasn't that bright when you consider some of the dodgy views he quite openly held, though as has been said, the world was a different place then and while it's no excuse, there really is such a thing as generational racism. I personally witnessed him score THAT goal in Rome in 77 and the memory of that tends to take precedence over any other opinions I might have about him. There wasn't one minute of that match when I didn't think we'd go on to win but, with hindsight, thinking back to the reality of the situation, we were in serious danger of losing a game that we weren't favourites for anyway after they equalised. All that changed when Tommy scored and gave me the best moment in my Liverpool supporting career. Another couple of memories I have of him playing in Europe were quite funny, or alternatively, reveal him to be a cheat and a thug, depending on your opinion of him. I think they both came from the same match which was an away game against Ferencvaros in about 74 or 75 after we'd drew the home game 1-1. Not long before this match, or possibly the season before, can't remember for sure, there was an incident where a bottle or other missile was thrown from the crowd, hitting a player and causing him to leave the field injured. This player's team went on to lose the game but on appeal, UEFA ordered the game to be replayed. This was obviously on Tommy's mind when a bottle was thrown from the crowd as he went to take a throw in with the score 0-0 and Liverpool about to be knocked out on the away goal rule. This bottle must have missed him by about 10 yards but Tommy saw it and and took a dive, claiming it had hit him. Can't remember if we actually appealed or not but UEFA took a dim view and fined and/or banned him as it was quite obvious what he was trying to do. Also, as we were pressing hard late in the game looking for the goal that would take us through, a ball was played forward towards Keegan as their goalie ran out towards it. The two came together and the goalie stayed down either genuinely hurt or, more likely faking it a bit. This would have been a nothing incident back home but on the continent keepers were more of a protected species and they took a dim view of such challenges on the goalie. So some of their players started to crowd round Keegan bullying him with some pushing and shoving. Next thing Tommy comes charging in to the picture and suddenly there are 3 Ferencvaros players lying on the ground holding their faces. Not sure how long his ban was for the other incident but he'd have been banned for about 2 years if he'd done that these days. I went to his testimonial too after arriving home at about 5pm on the Friday evening on the first special that left Rome Wednesday night. I sat down on the steps of The Kop and fell asleep. It was that gripping. :)
  15. Saunders was long gone when we played Sion, deffo Kyussi Lahti or however you spell it when he scored 4. That Sion game was one of the most entertaining matches I think I've ever seen btw. Re Saunders. There was a spell when there was no football on telly at all due to some dispute between the TV companies and the authorities over how much should be paid for the deal at the time, or at least I think that was the reason. So all we ever saw was brief goal scoring highlights on the news. This period seemed to coincide with Saunders being at his best, looking a bit, and even playing a bit like Keegan and, scoring loads of goals for Derby. So based on this, I quite stupidly as it turned out, was made up when we bought him. Little did I know that Keegan even now would be better than he was then. A big disappointment who didn't do much to endear himself to me after he left either by scoring 2 against us straight away for Villa. I THINK he might have scored a winning goal against us at Anfield later in the same season too.
  16. 23,000 fans present, at least 123,000 fans claim to have been there. I don't know ANYBODY who didn't go, noses like Pinocchio the fucking lot of them. :D
  17. Does the ESPN site have some sort of direct link to a lunatic asylum? Some of the responses to every one of these articles of Daves defy belief. I can also never figure out if the names of these contributors are deliberately ridiculous or, if they really are called that. Fucking bizarre really.
  18. Lampard's status is inevitably enhanced by his ability to score goals, always a useful trait to have of course, like David Platt before him and John Wark when playing for us. But it enables the ignorant dickheads who make up most of the football reporting media in this country to either miss, or mask the other deficiencies in his game. He's great against shite, especially for his club who have been better than most for a fair chunk of his career. But against good teams for both club and, especially country, more and more his main function has been to occupy space to basically get in the way of the opposition and help his team defend. Which requires discipline, especially from someone whose natural inclination is to attack. So fair play to him for that, but although he has been a very good player, I've never felt he was quite as good as the press he gets. Scholes has been brilliant for the Mancs but once went about 3 years without doing anything at all for England, and because of who he plays for, it took that full 3 years before anyone started saying anything about it. You only knew he was there when he got frustrated then started diving in with "those" tackles, often ending up with a yellow card and on one occasion a red. He also has had plenty making excuses for him for his sub standard England performances, pointing out how he gets played out of position. But it was only towards the end of his International career when this was the case. He was supposedly at his peak and in his favoured position when he went through that long barren spell. Did really well the way he reinvented himself to prolong his Man U career. The main thing I personally hold against him isn't actually his fault. Well it is really but, it's not just the disgraceful tackles, more the fact he never gets called to account for them, in fact for reasons I don't understand, his career threatening lunges are usually regarded as being funny "ha ha ha, oh what's he like that Scholesy, he just can't tackle". It's not fucking funny. Gerrard for me hasn't been quite as good as Kenny, Souness or Barnes, but if anyone wants to put him top of their list I wouldn't really argue with them. They are very much entitled to their opinion as he really has been that good. I suppose he could have been better for England but, it's telling that the "played out of position" arguments/excuses that were made for Scholes are seldom seen on behalf of Gerrard, except in places like this of course, yet they are far more valid in his case. For me he is way ahead of the other two with Scholes second and Lampard 3rd.
  19. There is to be increased security at Melwood as a result of this apparently. Let's hope it doesn't make it even harder for local kids to interact with their heroes, bearing in mind that for the most part, they can't do so at an actual match. Well not unless it's Notts County in the league cup or Dynamo Nobody in the minor European competition that we haven't qualified for anyway. What an utter cunt this feller must be.
  20. Chelsea City Spurs Man U Liverpool Arsenal Villa Everton Swansea Christ, the others are all so bad it's hard to split them. But the next month/6 weeks or so will determine whether or not Newcastle are in serious danger of going down Signs they are taking last season's awful late form in to this one. Then they sack Pardew. Which should be a good thing, but not f they replace him with Joke Kinnear. If all that comes about I'd say they are doomed.
  21. I THINK that was the last season the Anfield Rd End looked like that before they modernised it. Or if I'm wrong it must have been the penultimate season. My first game was early in the 66/67 season with my older brother in that very end and, it had deffo been modernised by then.
  22. Some of them looked more like they should have been in Westlife rather than running drugs for the Dublin underworld. I take it the Darren character doesn't die then, even though he didn't look too healthy at the end of season one. While he was no angel himself either, it would be hard to have any empathy at all with any of the others, who were basically such a bunch of cunts I'd have been glad to see them all die. Except for the Tommy character.
  23. A poor game between 2 average sides on that showing, although it did improve a bit in the 2nd half. The early challenge wasn't good but, apart from that I thought Everton were physical rather than dirty, though plenty of refs would have interpreted some of their challenges as fouls. It was actually good that this ref let them go. A draw would have been a fair result but for once one of our young sides actually stood up to sustained pressure, especially the aerial onslaught that grew the longer the game went on. Not much there to get excited about today, though I thought our goalie looked more assured than some of his counterparts of recent times, more reliable, and that was even before the penalty save. Can't remember if we've seen him before, if we have I'm assuming he must have improved.
  24. I'm not sure I agree with Dave's take on Kelly's abilities to do the full back job, even though I don't have a strong opinion either way as to whether that or centre half is his best position. I think he can perform the winger aspect of the job pretty well, though he is more the no frills push and run type of winger when attacking, rather than a skilful, tricky one. He can certainly put a good cross in, an ability which for reasons I don't understand, has become increasingly rare. I also think he is a good athlete with bags of stamina, thus enabling him to get up and down the full length of the pitch without suffering for it. Of course it's a fair point that if his body is going to keep creaking with injury after injury, then he is going to have a big problem and, the demands of that position will then be great. But if he keeps breaking down to that extent, nearly always with serious injuries too, then he's going to have this big problem whichever position he plays in. You'd also have to bear in mind he's never played for the 1st team at centre half (as far as I can remember) and it will have been a good while now since he has played there at any level.
