Peace corps is a pretty old organization, like at least 50 years, and it's part of the US State Department. If you sign up they send you out for 2 years to work in villages all over the third world. I think it is roughly divided between teachers, who work their asses off, and "Health & Environment" volunteers, who basically get to do whatever projects they feel like. They were a jaded bunch after a year but also very close to each other and they had really adopted the African way of time... slow, lots of conversation... it was fun hanging with them.

Just got back! Awesome time, first 3 days of work in Zanzibar, which is pretty touristy but had stunning beaches and loads of giant cargo ships moored just offshore... then a few days with my Peace Corps buddy in Dar Es Salaam- those guys drink a lot- and finally the highlight, 2 days in Morogoro, a mountain region not far from Dar. Moro was really sweet, met some Masai dudes and checked out their village for free, they fed me and everything. Those guys live like lions, spending most of the day lounging in the shade while their kids watch the cattle herd and their wives cook. Ahhh...
