  1. Lots of obsessive quote part of Torres statement to the effect that perhaps it was best for everyone that Rafa had gone because he had won everything and they asked too much of him last season. Not many are referring to his earlier statement when told of Rafa's going that "I have nothing but the greatest respect for Rafa".
  2. Still jealous that his dedication to the facts earned him a visit to Rafa at Melwood while your dedication to bitchy gossip, pseudo-psychology and slavish devotion to the Board's edicts has never earned you so much as a meeting with Purslow, let alone a player or the manager.
  3. The Taliban are laboriously constructing their 2010-2011 attack on Rafa. If he wins the league or the CL its because he inherited a great team. If he does not then its because he destroyed a great team. Just as well that Rafa could care less what they say. He will manage Inter as best they can be managed. The CL will be the hardest. There is so much luck involved - injuries and the draw.
  4. What if he was caught on video picking up the roll of cash and stuffing it out of sight under a cushion and then later said he only did that to make the briber think he was accepting it? That was Grobbelaar's story.
  5. Sure - just offer him 70% more money, after taxes, than he's getting now.
  6. Another one of your pearl's of ignorance. He has a two-year contract. That is the maximum he can stay. Like Mourihno he will probably want to move on towards the end of his contract, especially if teams like Real Madrid or LFC (under new owners) come calling.
  7. Probably. He was careful not to publish his questions, or suggestions to Yossi, or the other circumstances of the rant. I believe he chased Yossi hoping to exploit his confused feelings after leaving LFC to become a bench-sitter at Chelsea. Then he put a number of leading questions and suggestions to him. He cut and pasted Yossi replies to make them seem like one, long spontaneous outpouring.
  8. My suggestion to the powers-that-be on TLW. How about a permanent Rafa Benitez thread? We could then follow all his matches and (if you like) all his training sessions. We could even track his weight gains and losses. I suspect a lot of us are much more interested in Rafa than we are in Hodgson or Purslow. The majority of us are fond of Rafa and admire him. There is, of course, the vocal minority of obsessives who detest him. But even they must admit that they are fascinated by his every move. Even TLW stalwarts like Bascombe can't get enough of him. Many of us will be following every Inter match on TV and it would be good to have a place to comment on them.
  9. What formation will Purslow use this season? Will it be 1 7 3 or 1 8 2? I've heard he intends to take all the corners and penos himself and he'll play as a sole striker in the big cup games. His new part-time consultant, Roy, favours defence. On the telly he congratulated the Swiss for keeping out the Spanish by a blanket defense and he was very impressed by how the teams from the smaller nations can neutralise the more talented sides of the larger nations. It promises to be very exciting series of back-to-the wall defensive masterpieces this season.
  10. He's not good enough for Real Madrid. There was never an offer for him - just press talk. The only way there would be interest is if he was younger or very cheap and then they could make a profit by selling him on in an year, like they did with Owen. His age and current form means he would not do well there or at any major club.
  11. I wonder if, for the sake of consistency with established practice, Dave Usher and Chris Bascombe will be referring to Roy in their articles as "the Englishman"
  12. I'd swop Lucas's effort last season and his consistency and attitude for Gerrard's.
  13. Roy is waiting to find out if he can talk to Insua and Lucas. Purslow hasn't got back to him yet.
  14. Which Woy? Woy Wodgers or Woy the Wed Squiwwel?
  15. It must be galling for all the anti-Rafa obsessives on here - as well as their representative at the NoW and their soul-mate Purslow - that far from hurting Rafa's reputation, the Yossi rant has increased respect for him. In a nutshell - Rafa acquired Yossi as a decent journeyman squad-player and coaxed better performances from him than Yossi had ever achieved before. He supported him against fan criticism and offered him a pay raise and contract extension last season. When Yossi became too big for his boots, and wanted to become first choice, belittling other players in the process, Rafa reminded him of his role as a squad player and when Yossi started talking to other clubs, told him thanks and goodbye. That's good management. As usual Rafa insisted on making a profit from the sale. But since Rafa has gone Purslow has kept the actual sale price secret. I bet even Hodgson doesn't know it.
  16. Where does Bascombe make these denials and comments? I thought he was a journalist working for the NoW. Surely he should explain himself on there? He seems to have a shadowy parallel existence on this forum - which also happens to have a core of vocal anti-Rafa wallahs, like himself.
  17. I think he managed Yossi very well. He brought him to the club and treated him very well - Yossi said "Benitez loves me". He then played him a lot in the highest point-scoring season, 2008-2009, and coaxed several good performances from him by playing him in positions nobody expected. He tried to reassure him last season by telling him he needed him as part of the squad and by extending his contract to 2013 and paying him more wages. When Yossi started to talk to other clubs and the media he told him "thanks for your three years service""and said he could go if he wanted. What's wrong with that?
  18. Those stating that Bascombe did nothing wrong and even showed journalistic integrity in promoting Yossi's rant don't seem to understand journalism. Its not to give uncritical publicity to anyone with a rant. A journalist is supposed to ask the ranter probing questions - and as this thread makes clear - there were many obvious question he could have asked in this case. If he asked them he did report them. In fact, we don't even know if Yossi's rant was one long splurge or if it was a serious of replies in response to Bascombe leading questions and suggestions. After all we do know Bascombe has an anti-Rafa agenda. Journalists are also supposed to check the ranter's facts and to check with the target of his rant. Bascombe never told us if he tried to get a comment from Rafa. If Bascombe's defence is he just switched on the tape recorder and then transcribed what was said - why does he call himself a journalist? However tacky this latest example of his journalism, the "quotes" from Yossi were an improvement over Bascombe's usual style of citing anonymous "senior sources" or "people close to the club" without any quotes. I cannot see how most of his reports are more journalistic than fatty Oldham's.
  19. Its touching to see your ongoing support for Bascombe but for nobody else. If Purslow takes the credit for the Standard Charter deal and other improvements in the commercial income, why do you not give him the credit for the increase in the season ticket prices?
  20. Yossi Jul 08: "I have very good chemistry with Benitez. He loves me. I really enjoy being with him" Liverpool Echo - Liverpool FC - News - Rafa Benitez loves me so I'm staying put - Yossi Benayoun What happened between the sheets, Yossi? Did Rafa kick you out of bed, love?
