  1. Hi Trucker Paddy, dont think the plater you are remembering is Willie Boland, he went to Coventry from Carew Park in Limerick not Cherry Orchard, and I wouldn't imagine Carew got that much money. He would have gone very early 90's as well.
  2. Always something I would like to know the answer to, Its a common belief that the UK and France declared war on Germany because they Invaded Poland in WW2, why then didn't they both declare war on the Soviet Union when it invaded Poland late in September 1939? Just wondered if anyone knew why. Obvioulsy they made the correct decision, but what else was factored in to it besided the Nazi's being a dodgy sort?
  3. :) Your right, consumer responsibility never thought of that angle. When someone is buying drugs though, for the most part they are making sure that somebody somewhere has been exploited or worse. (I am of course not referring to the genial local drug dealer, that grows everyting himself and dispnses drugs with a carefree manner and a steady line of credit) Not like my Primark white T-shirts (pack of 3) for holidays, me and you are only assuming that someone was exploited in making them. Also - People who suffer from addiction to any substance, I am not including in any perceived flippant replies above, the thread was related to a "casual" user and mine to "casual" users.
  4. Legalizing any drug is a whole other argument, which probably has been done on here before, and a lot better then I would hope to contribute to. On this thread my point was related to people saying he should stop as he has responsibilities or it will effect his health etc, I am just throwing in another reason for stopping that often gets overlooked by people. There are plenty of people who "enjoy" their illegal drugs at the weekend, who will watch the news during the week and call people scumbags or such when they see shootings/stabbings/beatings from less well of estates. They don't see the link between their pleasure and other peoples pain.
  5. He (and probably some others on here) should also consider they type of people you buy cocaine and most other drugs from. It may be okay he is on a good wage and lives in a nice flat in Bratislava (or where-ever) but what the people he buys the shit from are probably making peoples lives a misery in less well off estates around that and any city. He and others may be able to divorce the shootings and intimidation that goes on for thousands of people from his "little" habit, but I don't.
  6. Carra probably was a bit out of line, after all Arbeola recovered to get the block back in. Fair play to Arbeloa for not backing down to Carra either though, nice to see that.
  7. Always get those kinds of memories when listening to "Round are Way" by Oasis, another top notch B side from them.
  8. Well thats wrong for a start, Zidane wasn't great in Frances first game, got sent off in the 2nd one and was supsended until the Semi I think, which France struggled to win relying on their full back to save them. Granted he played well in the Final and got the goals but to say that it was anything like Maradonna in 86 (or indeed 90) is taking the piss. France in 98 was the definition of a team winning the world cup with no outright star.
  9. Yes AK, I agree with you to a point and try to reflect that in the last part of my post. I defy anyone not to admire him when watching or reading about his sprint through the German Lines at Foy. I have heard a story about Rudolph Hess (I think it was him, I could be wrong) about a new commandant in Spandau that tried to put the fear of God in to him. Hess had no worries as he felt he had already met the scariest man around in Speirs, and thats from a Bastard that had met Hitler and probably Stalin.
  10. Section, you may not realise that since he has passed away some of the more serious stories to do with his involment with shooting prisoners and in one instance his own men have started to come out. A number of years ago a man that he ordered to help him kill prisoners came to a point where he couldn't live with himself any longer and needed to get some closure. He decided to meet up with Speirs to see was he suffereing the same emotions and guilt that he suffered. Speirs did not suffer any guilt or emotion on the subject. I will look this up and try and provide a link to the story. Speirs it seems was a physcopath and felt no emotion when it came to sacrificing his men. In the famous D-Day assault on the guns at Brecourt Manor, winters and his men fought for 3 hours clearing 3 of the Guns. They suffered one man dead. Speirs heroically asked Winters could he and his team assault the last position/Gun. As potrayed in the TV series and similar to what happened in real life he jumped up and led a direct assault leading to the death of 3 of his men. He also was supposed to have been involved with the CIA after he finished as Commandant of Spandau Prison in Germany. IMO, he is a hard person to fully admire because of the prisoners he murdered, the reason is that there were so many other men in that company along with the rest of the Allies (& Axis) in WW2 that were as heroic without resorting to what he did.
  11. Eoin hand had a good start to his Ireland career, fair enough. But to say that he would suddenly have qualified us for championships after a mediocre 1986 world cup campaign is a bit ambitious. He had 6 years on the job and never reached the heights of 81 again (which to be fair was a travesty that we didn't qualify for the 82 cup). How did you feel in 88, 90, 94? Hindsight is a wonderful thing.
  12. I would agree with you. Watch our performance against the Soviet Union in 88. We outplayed them all over the park and they made the final. Charlton cut his cloth according to the players (not to mention the surface our home matches were on) he had available and the ones he made available for Ireland. Some of which didn't care, who they played for internationally as long as it got them a cap. It seems to me that it has recently become fashionable to slate charlton, and jump on the bandwagon of Dunphy etc. Its usually happens with the most vociferous supportes of Roy Keane as well.
  13. He will probably say he is not Irish, he is a corkonian. ***whisper it***, Sunderland are probably his second club now. Hermes - Regarding the fact that the Irish PM at the time sent his condolonces to the German ambassodor on the death of Hitler the lawful leader of the country at the time, in hindsight its obvioulsy been shown not to have been his finest hour but at the time Ireland was striving to keep its self out of the war as much as possible. And a lot of what the Nazi regime were up to was not in the public domain at that time either. In fact the government at the time had a very leniant stance on Neutrality for Britian when it came to combatants landing or washing up in Ireland. British combatants were normally sent home through Northern Ireland while German ones were interned until the end of the war. This was quite a big deal for that PM (De Valera) as he was from a Generation that viewed "Britians Difficulties as Irelands Oppurtunity" and had been a participant in the 1916 rising and leader in the war of indepence.
  14. You seem to have an interest in this section 31 (shouldn't everyone), but I would recommend a book by Gordon Corrigan called Blood, Sweat and Arrogance. It really gives an alternative view on some of the sacred cows from WW2. Churchill in particular gets a bit of a roasting, along with Montgomery. His views on Chamberlin are also not what were are used to hearing about him. I agree with what you mentioned earlier on what we all owe that generation. I spent a week in Normandy recently and it is sobering but incredibly enjoyable experiance.
  15. I think someone that has the peoples republic of cork/rebel bullshit so ingrained in his mind that he will change the name of a paper to include Cork, when it hasn't been called that in years, shouldn't be throwing the term twat around.
