  1. New York Scotland - the Highlands Honourable mentions: Krakow Paris
  2. It wouldn't be an election without Scottish golf-hater Trump chiming in....nice to see Obama's reposte on the Leno show. That Trump really is a cunt. I remember going to New York in '09 and our tour guide said "yep, ladies and gentlemen...Donald Trump is a New Yorker. And he's also a complete douche who is hated by pretty much all of the people in this fair city". Quality. Anyways, back to the election - any nation that decides to elect its president based on a flimsy debate because the incumbent was a bit lethargic deserves the world's contempt/pity/scorn. Don't get me wrong: Obama isn't perfect. But Romney just comes across as dangerous and wildly incompetent, but without Dubya's buffoonery. The ridiculous comments his party members have made on abortion and rape alone should be enough for the nation to issue a great big "fuck off". Unfortunately I cannot escape the nagging feeling that there are some people over in the States who don't want Obama simply because of the colour of his skin.
  3. Shocking news - only dipped in and out of the forums of late so only just clocked this. So sorry mate I truly hope you manage to have as lovely a wedding day as possible. My deepest sympathy to you mate. Best wishes to you and your fiance.
  4. Haha, sorry Lurtz.... I just meant that Connery is limited. It's already mentioned here that he's just a moody Scotsman in everything he's done!
  5. My favourite Bond films are Goldeneye, Live and Let Die and You Only Live Twice....but my favourite Bond is Craig. He's fucking boss. Suave, always ready with a quip (but not to the point of parody like Moore) and he could actually kick the shit out of you. And just as importantly he can take a beating as well. Admittedly Brosnan started out getting a beating off Sean Bean (of course, Bean is solid) but even he ended up going down the "I'll kill everyone and not get a mark on me" road. Craig is the only Bond who can actually act as well. He's capable of taking Bond into the dark places that the character was written to do. I do love Connery (he's my second choice) but it's Craig for me. I reckon Skyfall will cement his place. Craig Connery Moore Brosnan Dalton Lazenby
  6. Good stuff, that. Seamus Milne had a good piece in the Guardian today on it.
  7. Met Champ for the semi final while I was in Edinburgh, she's sound. Great day too, one of the Scottish semi finals was on in the same pub, cracking atmosphere.
  8. Yep. Let's not forget he penned Eleanor Rigby. And Helter Skelter. And Penny Lane.
  9. "I was only born here because you people brought my people here" Just one of the wild innaccuracies in that intriguing monologue.
  10. Superb commentator; football could do with somebody like him, proper character rather than the likes of Beglin and Alan fucking Smith.
  11. I think "lowest of the low despicable cunt" award would be far more appropriate.
  12. I recall feeling the same way about the LOTR trilogy when they announced it as well. "Elijah Wood? Isn't he about three years old??" "Dominic Monaghan - that dopey kid from Hetty Wainthropp??" I was quite underwhelmed, with the exceptions of Tyler, Lee and of course, McKellen. Thank fuck it all turned out well in the end though. I hope this is the same for the Hobbit. Slightly alarmed by the inclusion of Baker and Nesbitt like, but still. We can but hope!
  13. You're right Skaro mate, this what makes this place interesting! I never missed Bombadil to be honest. When quizzed, Jackson said he had to focus the story on the main character to prevent the film being too long. He called FOTR "Frodo-centric", and focused on his journey. He said "what does Bombadil contribute to the progression of the ring?" I have to agree - they've set the films up to show how terrible and terrifying the ring is, and here's one character who it has zero effect on. It kind of undercuts the peril somewhat. In a book, it's fine, but on screen it diverts from the main thread of the film. There is a nice little homage to old Tom though, in the Two Towers, when Treebeard sings a song of his (to stop Old Man Willow devouring the hobbits in Fellowship) to stop the same thing happening to Merry and Pippin. There are lots of things omitted though, like the fact that in the book the ring has no effect on Faramir whatsoever, and the Scouring of the Shire. Actually, it's this that I was most unhappy with, if I had to be picky; the fact that this excellent ending was left out. I appreciate that this would have made ROTK about three years long but it would have been great to see Wormtongue taken down by Merry. I don't think anybody could have done a better job though. This is an awesome adaptation. Hopefully the Hobbit films will follow suit.
  14. Ted - that is an ace shout. Hardy is boss. Not to mention Nolan, who is also boss! Again, like that aspect of Craig's Bond, Hardy has the physicality (Bronson, TDKR) to continue this new approach to the character. He's also smooth and - unlike Dalton, Brosnan, Moore - a bloody good actor. Sec - you're right about the lack of development in Bond in QoS, but it was set straight after CR so perhaps it was a conscious decision. Hopefully this one will see some development to stop Craig becoming a parody. Fingers crossed.
  15. He's the only Bond I've ever seen who looks like he could rip your arms off. And then beat you to death with them. He's intense - a much more believable attribute in an agent required to kill up close than the flippant approach by Moore and Connery. The old Bonds have their place in a pre-Bourne era I feel. After Damon travelled across Europe kicking several shades of shit out of anybody and everybody but - crucially - was embroiled in anguish and mental torment, Bond had to do the same. It just didn't fit that he cold be a perfect killing machine. So the 'origins' approach of Casino Royale and the subsequent "loose cannon" Bond (which looks like continuing here, breaking into M's house AGAIN, by the looks of the trailer) fit much more nicely.
  16. I suspect - and I could be wrong here, but I'm going out on a limb - that Unrighteous is not a fan of the LOTR films, the Hobbit films, or Peter Jackson's oscar-winning approach to filmmaking here. Ah well. They're getting made, and made into three, which for fans of the books and of the film adaptations, is superb news. I wouldn't trust any other director to take this task on. He lovingly made the LOTR films and I think he will have done the same here. I can understand - to an extent - where you're coming from mate with the missing characters and convoluted plot lines etc etc but I feel they were made with great care and lovingly crafted. I was worried when the announcement was made way back in 1998 that they would be making the trilogy that they would balls it all up but i was astounded by the results. Easily my favourite films of all time. Nobody will spoil this for me!
  17. Can't wait for this. Craig is my favourite Bond. QoS was not as bad as was made out and Casino Royale was fucking ace. Looks like this one is in fine hands with Mendes. Agree with the above; the way he sorts his cuffs out when jumping onto that train is pure Bond. Brilliant. This year keeps improving with the films on offer. This, along with Ted (yet to see it, looks hilarious), the Bourne Legacy and the Hobbit pt 1 to go alongside TDKR makes 2012 a cracker.
  18. Agreed. The source material is the entire life's work of the great man. Eight more films wouldn't be enough to cover it all. I can't wait.
  19. Gobshites who wear their hoods half on their heads. Either wear it properly, or, as it ISN'T EVEN FUCKING RAINING, don't wear it at all, you little fuckwit.
  20. Nice use of the Moria coda from Fellowship of the Ring there as well.
