  1. Our first team is now as good as it has probably been since we last won the title. Plus I'd like to hope that Rafa is banking on a couple of top drawer players, and thats what they are, like Keane and Barry each year. Its what we were all calling for, he's doing it and for the first time I think we can compete with United and Chelsea in terms of big name/big money quality on the pitch. We have a front six of five 20 million pound footballers, which is what we've been saying we need for years. Barry Mascherano Gerrard Keane Babel(potential but who has yet to do it) Torres I understand Rafa is going to play this down but the time is surely now.
  2. Time to roll this baby out. I know there are ownership issues and that ultimately that is the top priority, but this is a footballing question. I think its safe to assume that Barry is in and Alonso probably is out whatever the rights or wrongs of the situation. For me, that strengthens our challenge. So we know our squad and i think its a huge improvement on last year. Keane will add goals, Gerrad can solve our problems on the right and play the Ronaldo role. That leaves us in a very strong position squad wise and first team wise. Rafa is in year 5, he has all his own players, playing his way. We have to challenge for the title this year.
  3. Only really caught the tail end of Sounesses career, but defensive midfielder?? I always thought of him as the perfect all rounder, so I guess he could do either, and maybe the roll of defensive midfielder has changed to a specialist position these days but Souness for me wouldn't be that. Anyhow, Souness himself said the best attacking midfielder of his generation was Terry Mac.
  4. To be fair lads the only thing I'd hold against him is that he's actually not the best reader of a game, he trades a little too much on clichés for my own liking. I don't think he's that hard on us. Nor is Souness, both men have confessed to being LFC fans on many occasions, Souness even started crying on RTE this year during YNWA, but its still not enough for most people. Its easy for Thommo who is employed to be biased AND to be a focal point for windups of this club by stelling and the boys, something which is just as bad IMO. Same with Aldo as he's on local radio. We've got bigger things to worry about
  5. I know what you are saying, but Keane isn't British.
  6. Straight from the horses mouth, 10 years ago. He got very bad advice too WHY I SNUBBED LIVERPOOL, By ROBBIE KEANE | Sunday Mirror | Find Articles at BNET "I was over at Anfield for a week and got to meet all the players I had worshipped on the telly, people like Ian Rush and Robbie Fowler. "Everybody at the club was nice to me but I still didn't accept when they asked me to sign. Somehow I had this feeling that it would be better to build my career elsewhere. "That's not to say that I wouldn't go back to Liverpool at some point in the future if I got the chance and I thought it was a good career move. "But Anfield just wasn't for me at that particular time. I reckoned I could do better elsewhere and I think I've been proved right! If I'd taken Liverpool up on their offer I don't think I'd be as far forward as I am now."
  7. Fair enough, but I supppose at least he was willing to play for his country. :ermm:
  8. Come on Gav, I've seen you defend Stephen Ireland and the scumbag other Keane, what gives?
  9. Some food for thought. Overall, outside of Ronaldo, no other player has outscored Keane in the league in the last 3 years. Keane has also outscored Drobga in the league in his time at Cheslea(4 years). He has also outscored Rooney in Rooneys time as a pro, in the league(6 years). I actually didn't think he was that consistent. He'd do a job for us alright.
  10. If they wind you up, turn them off. They are paid to give their opinions. I'd rather them than Shearer and Hansen any day of the week. The John Cleese stuff was below the belt alright.
  11. Just check you tube for Dunphy's attack on Terry Venables Or the night Souness and Dunphy double teamed Brady when we beat Arsenal or the week Roy Keane packed it in. Electric stuff
  12. the lads havin a laugh on bradys going away night, dunph with a twinkle in his eye
  13. Pretty obvious then that Aiden McGeady is the missing link. A jock-paddy who plays both our problem positions. Get him in and watch no19 happen.
  14. Doubt he'll go for anything like 20 million, but i think it would be an ok move. He has come on a lot in the last couple of years in terms of consistency and would certainly offer us another spark of creativity in the forward line. As has been said, he can fill 3 of the attacking positions and generally is not phased by big games. He never had much pace though and his finishing can go awry at times Here are his stats for the last 3 seasons Games Goals 54 23 44 22 38 16 Included in that are 42 league goals. Its very impressive scoring by anyones standards and if we could get that return from him, then its a no-brainer
  15. We can only base this on what both players have done and are doing*. Silva looks like a far better player, and I would like far better players at the club. * I've probably only seen Silva play 10 times
  16. We are all only guessing regarding what is and isn't available and who is available and for what price. I think its fair enough to be disappointed with the prospect of getting Downing when Silva and Villa are some names being touted (not by Rafa I know). If we are on a tight budget I would have sacrified everything for one top top notch attacker and as has been said, we've got plenty of players ready to be offloaded in the sales. I really think we'll have some money to spend, certainly enough to get someone of that quality. As regards proven premiership, I'd refute that argument, I think its a bit of a misnomer. No signing is guaranteed to be a hit but I'd argue for proven quality instead. Off the top of my head here are some proven premiership players who came to us on the back of decent seasons, Nigel Clough, Zenden, Bennayoun, Leonardson, John Scales, Ziege, Phil Babb. The list could go on and on. All that said if Downing came, I think he would do a job.
  17. I think he would certainly do a job for us and would be a significant improvment on Babel, but if Sivla is avilable for 4 or 5 million more it would be madness not to go for him.
  18. Nice sentiments Rashid. After watching Silva last night, I'd be pissed off if we settled for someone like Downing. If last season taught us anything, its that buying in top quality makes sense both on the field and financially. Our two main buys are both worth considerably more than what they were purchased for, especially in the case of Torres. Ask yourself this, could downing put in a display like what Silva did last night. I don't think he could and that should be our benchmark.
  19. True, but I think he could improve it significantly. Quinn was pure and utter shite until he was about 26/27 I mean he was awful, could hardly run without falling over. He hit his peak between about about 30 and 33 when he was unplayable in some ways.
  20. Here is what Wenger said about Niall Quinn, when I hear this I can see why he might be interested in Crouch. "It is one of my biggest regrets that he was not here during my time," Wenger said, to a slightly startled group of journalists when asked about Quinn on Friday. Wenger, whose young side are unbeaten going into today's game and producing the style of football for which he is renowned, said Quinn, often unfairly written off as a cumbersome target man during his time at Arsenal, was an intelligent team player who was so precise with his aerial distribution it was as if he had " a hand for a head". "I felt he was an intelligent player. It would have been a good combination with Thierry Henry. What I like with Niall Quinn is if you look at the player who played next to him, he always scored 40 goals because he had a hand for his head and he just put the ball where you were. He was a team player. A top-class player makes other players look good and he had that quality."
