  1. Lucas reminds me of the Milan-Juve champions league final about 6 years back. Lot of lads I know tried to convince me that the game was a feast for the tactical connoisseur and those who didn't get the game just couldn't see it. In reality it was shite. Great result last night though, hopefully we can put this to bed early and concentrate on the league.
  2. Nothing in football is objective, it popularity has a lot to do with the emotion and opinion involved. You should know this. The post match stuff is as much a part of the show as the game these days, especially with Dunphy, not so much Giles and Souness, they'll usually try to give serious analysis. Soccer Saturday have taken the concept on further by having people watch people watching the games. If Phil Thompson was objective he wouldn't be in a job. If it upsets you don't watch it, if you like getting worked up then do, or better still, see it for what it is.
  3. A few facts and figures are off, but the general theme regarding the type of manager Rafa is IMO, pretty sound. That said, I'm beginning to think that if he settles on a team then we could win the league this year, regardless of our style of play. It'll be very interesting to see how he approaches a run of games with a fully fit squad, system wise and personnel wise.

  5. This mightn't go down well, but now is the time to settle on a formation and set of players and stick with it. Even though we won, I thought Rafa made a bit of a balls of it last night selection wise. Alonso looked on Saturday to be getting his groove back, he should be given the next 5 games minimum to cement his place. In fact, his ability to control the tempo of the game when on form was sorely missed in the second half. We've got a fully fit squad to choose from, with serious options everywhere(Babel's form and Riera's acquisition has re-invigorated the left side), giving the likes of Benayoon and Lucas a game for the sake of it shouldn't even be a consideration. For the next 5 games, I'd go 4-2-3-1 with Macherano, Alonso, Gerrard, Keane, Riera/Babel, Torres. There is a great great opportunity here to set our stall out for the season and build a bit of momentum.
  6. Obviously ask him if its ok, but that paper is available online also, so they are out there on the ether every Wednesday. As you say, its good advertising for the book.
  7. stop wrecking my thread langers
  8. You need to be more subtle. Ease your way in, get a few lads on side, maybe introduce a catch phrase or two. Thats the way a proper wum would do it.
  9. I'm going to keep a record of the fantastic Terrace Talk article's by Steven Kelly in here for those that can't get to the Irish examiner. Here's this weeks offering. Panto season as Man City lurk behind us IN my youth, school days would pass with the agonising crawl of a John Terry train of thought. You had to make your own fun, since displaying any desire to learn was irrefutable proof of homosexuality and the precursor to a hefty beating. We lesser delinquents were eternally grateful to the biggest class clowns, who occupied the majority of the teacher's attention. It meant we could get away with other stuff while his back was turned. These memories came flooding back as Newcastle and West Ham continued their campaign to make the pantomime season last 12 months. Manchester City also took centre stage, albeit cast in the unlikely role of Cinderella. They all at least ensured that far less press ink was wasted on Liverpool's muddled start to the season and the latest stadium debacle. There was a vain attempt to spin some controversy out of Carragher's England remarks in his new book, but no one cares about that now surely? He's made his choice and that should be the end of the matter. No doubt the Americans were also grateful to Mike Ashley and whoever's running Upton Park this week. I predicted Keegan would be the first managerial casualty of the season, which is unusual, as normally I couldn't even tip rubbish. Curbishley had his flounce though and kept my previously woeful record intact. As the Geordies marched and wailed with their usual insanity and unparalleled talent for aggrandisement up popped the eternal lament: "let the manager manage". That old chestnut again. We've heard that one a lot ourselves in recent years, usually from the same fans that moaned the longest about Houllier's purchase of Diouf, Diao and Cheyrou in one career-crippling spree. If there were a plot to unsettle Rafa all it would take is the appointment of a director of football. It wouldn't even reach the point of resignation; he'd probably spontaneously combust. But a manager can only do his job unfettered if he has proven beyond doubt that he has what it takes to win the ultimate prize – and he hasn't done that yet, or even come close. The stubborn streak which managers need can often be their undoing. For all their faults Babel and El Zhar had made a difference against Liege yet neither had the chance to do likewise to Villa. It's his fifth year and we're still having the same old arguments. That just adds fuel to the flames since it's seen as his final chance. As for the latest multi-million takeover there's a phrase in football which even the true-bluest of Mancunians use; "typical City". Getting your hands on limitless funds on the final day of the transfer window was another great Eastlands comedy moment, but laugh while you can. There's no use pretending not to look over our shoulder or that we're unaware of the possibility of losing our seat at the table. I claimed last week that only a miracle could take our top-four spot away. When will I learn to keep my big mouth shut? You may scoff at the idea of Torres being one of their future targets, but throughout Rafa's winter woes his support for the manager was unequivocal. One of the other foreign sugar daddies almost took Gerrard away when Houllier was sacked and it was obvious we faced a long torturous journey back to the top. Should that befall Benitez it may be too late for the captain to try his luck elsewhere, but not for the current golden boy – and with the Yanks desperate for cash… As O'Neill (Eugene not Martin) said there is no present or future, just the past endlessly repeating itself. I may be taking the usual doom mongering too far. Perhaps it's the thought of you-know-who coming to Anfield Saturday, and our appalling recent record against them, which is weighing so heavily. 18/5 is still the main weapon in our propaganda armoury, but it's become less and less of a consolation as the years go by. There is one thought even more terrifying; that it may soon cease to be a weapon at all.
  10. Babel is also stronger than Robben, Ronaldo, Joe Cunt, Robinho and Messi. Second touch is usually a tackle and lacks stamina despite being a horse of a lad and only 21, thats what I'd be concerned about
  11. His mindset for the Villa game would seem to say a lot. I thought he had finally realised that he has to try and win every game and not settle for draws, except for maybe United, Arsenal and Chelsea away. Everything else we should be going for 3 points until the 90 minutes are up. Top of the league doesn't mean shit at the moment, it was 2 points happily conceded against Villa. Its very very disappointing to see this negative approach remain.
  12. I agree but this is the modern game, you either get with the program or you eventually fall behind and in our case possibly disgintegrate because of the pyramid scheme tactics in piling debt which cannot be repaid on the club. Its a joke
  13. But who is calling him a cunt? I'm not his biggest fan, and don't think he is good enough for the team, but I always try to maintain my criticisms to football, he has good points and bad points and IMO his bad ones on the whole outweigh the good. Thats my opinion and the opinion of plenty of people here. For the record I think Benny and Arbeloa are similarly weak links but here's the catch; I think a great deal of the antipathy, if you could even call it that, comes from this anti-hero status that he has been given by lots of people on this board. I know this kind of happens with a lot of players who aren't up to scratch(eg Biscan, Traore), but when you have a signifcant body of people on this website saying his is a legend and a phenomenal player you are bound to get a reaction from those who think otherwise. I think the reason you don't get the same level of debate regarding Yossi is because he doesn't have a fan club routinely proclaiming demi-god status even after poor performances and because he isn't one of the first names on the teamsheet. There are as many Dirk is great threads as there are Dirk is shit ones and as long as people put forward footballing opinions I don't see that as a problem.
  14. He is in my fuck, open your eyes. He's a workhorse with a great attitude. Rafa is always banging on about controlling the game, but how can you do this when we have players who can't control the ball.
  15. Not good enough at inside right, and so bad in a traditional right wing role that its scary. It says a lot about the drop in standards that half this site now laud medicority, maybe its just because we haven't had a decent wide player in years. He routinely gave the ball away last night, made the wrong decisions and generally did nothing much in a creative sense, which is his job. Fair fucks to him for the goal and he ran around a lot, but if we serious about moving to the next level have to look at the bigger picture.
  16. Considering virtually every winner and most of the participants of the Olympics 100 metres finals in the last 25 years have been busted for drugs, I say Phelps.
  17. Barry was outstanding again yesterday, involved in 3 of the goals and was all over the field, I think the comparisons with Alonso are becoming more futile by the day. Barry is just more dynamic and from what I saw yesterday he could do a job on left as well as alongside Mascherano in a two or left and infront of Mascherano alongside Gerrard in a diamond. Alonso in comparison can play one position and even then its debatable if he's better than Barry there, especialy given his form over the last 2 years. He'd be well worth the money.
  18. -----------------------------------Reina--------------------------------- Arbeloa--------------Carragher-------------Agger----------------Dossena ---------------------Alonso----------Spearing---------------------------- ----------Gerrard---------------Keane--------------Benayoun-------------- ---------------------------Torres--------------------------------- It would be nice if we settled on a formation, whatever that may be, pretty early in the season
  19. If I was in the clique it would be hilarious. I think some people are suffering from Rashid withdrawl symptoms. I've seen the signs
  20. Alonso or Molby? And I'm not talking about the skinny Molby that came out of the slammer. I think Molby would win it by a belly If its close I'll add a poll.
