  1. Yesterday had made a massive week for us even harder. I can see both arguments in this. BR clearly played what fans would consider a weakened team, although one that contained 9 full internationals. As much as I believe the team that started should have won the match, if he does rest certain key players and we lose he leaves himself open for criticism. Personally, I've been an advocate of giving Stevie some bench time to ensure he is fit and sharp, so against lower league opposition with Arsenal and City ahead this week I think it makes total sense to use this match as an opportunity to rest him. In BR's defence, FSG have shown that the domestic cup competitions carry little weight with their sacking of Kenny. If he has been told to give the cups bottom billing then he's not going to send out all of the big guns against Oldham. But lets not forget this was hardly a youth side we fielded, there was a £50m strikeforce on the field, £30m worth of midfielders and players who've played in World Cups. A much weaker team went to WBA and won in the league cup. Our problems go beyond selection, it's an inherent shithouseness when faced with physically intimidating opposition. They roughed us up and we couldn't handle it. It's all very well playing your nice passing game against a side like Norwich who'll give you the space to play your game, but you've got to be able to mix it when teams go toe to toe with you. By and large we can't. If I was any manager managing a side facing us the team talk and tactics would be simple. Go long, go direct, get in our faces and rough us up. Too many shithouses in the squad who are happy to put a shift in when we're 3-0 up at Anfield but go missing when we're in a dogfight against a Stoke, a Mansfield, an Oldham, even a Man Utd as the first hour showed us the other week. Unless we add steel to the squad we risk being an Arsenal MK II, looking like Barcelona at home against the dross, but a soft touch when it really matters. I don't think Brendan is stupid, but it's down to him now to right these wrongs. He can start this week by picking up points in the league but the problems that run deeper are going to take longer to address.
  2. You can blame Rodgers all you like but by doing so you take the heat off the shithouses who he entrusted to wear the shirt today. I'm not defending him, he pretty much set us up with a 2 man midfield which is naive to day the least. As much as I think Carra would have been suited today, I've also bemoaned Coates' lack of games so if be a hypocrite to criticise that selection. I wasnt happy with the subs and think Gerrard should have been on at HT.But regardless of that, the team we had on the field should have beat league 1 cannon fodder like Oldham. He can drill them all he wants, give them the finest team talk known to man, but if they go out there and allow themselves to get bullied like that what can he do? What can he do when Jones spills a pea roll cross with no pressure on whatsoever? For too long too many of them didn't fancy it. Until Stevie came on no one took any kind of responsibility of the match. Too many of them hid, bottled it. What I will say is we are frighteningly easy to score against. Be it the midfield or defence, te solid spine we once possessed has vanished. We are a soft touch to any side that adopts a physical approach. To win matches against sides like that you have to win the battle first. We nearly come unstuck at Mansfield and we didn't learn from that today. Disgusted and every one of them should be ashamed of themselves.
  3. @JNorthcroft: Coutinho to Liverpool with medical on Monday but initial fee much less than the €13m being reported - €10m.

  5. That's a lie,Newcastle and Villa loved how we conducted business.
  6. @tancredipalmeri: Huge news re Coutinho. I will report it live in studio at 11.15pm on @talkSPORT
  7. Looked very promising as a youngster but as we've seen with our young lads this year there comes a time when they need pulling out the team. Insua never got that break and it broke him really. Glad he seems to be recapturing some form and building on his early promise.
  8. "Big Dunc" played a fucking blinder. Sat on his arse 'injured' pocketing 50k a week all season but always made sure he was available for the derbys. In for a week and out for a month, Duncan is a tampon
  9. I totally agree with the notion of setting our value and not overpaying, and RiS and others are right to point out that overpaying for players has massively stung us in the recent past. However, in a case such as this I think the notion falls down slightly. If we rate the lad in the £8m category, would we really see ourselves miss out on his signature for the sake of £1-2m? If we don't feel he is worth the extra (relatively minuscule) fee then is he worth targeting at all? Liverpool and Ayre may be playing a blinder here, setting our stall out and ensuring that we drive a hard deal, all the time confident that we will sign the player eventually. We may have waited intentionally until the last few days of the window to make our move, knowing Inter's reported financial troubles, presumably having sounded out the player before making our approach and realising that our negotiating position is stronger because of these factors. The problem is that we have seen the club conduct so much disastrous business over the past few years and subsequently its now very hard to give them the benefit of the doubt. I'm going to try, let's see what happens over the coming days.
  10. Blue bird in work collared me before totally out of the blue, demanding I have a bet with her that they finish above us in the league this season. She wanted a tenner on it , I suggested 40. She was having none of it then.
  11. Totally agree. If we've been scouting him for so long and now made our move, he must be a number 1 target. He fits the bullshit 'profile' Ayre and co have been spouting on about for months. If this doesn't happen and he goes to Southampton for a couple of million more then alarm bells should ring. They'll make out its about value, when in reality we probably can't afford the extra couple of million. Hoping the club prove us wrong on this, but at this stage we will look like a right joke if we don't pull this off.
  12. 7? Probably 12m with add ons. Then Ayre will declare how shrewd we are and how he fits the "profile of player" for the 'project', and how we won't overpay for anyone.
  13. He is their Merseyside reporter I think so one of the better ones.
  14. LFC have held more talks with Inter, but yet to make a significant breakthrough. Inter have informed Liverpool that they want €12m for Coutinho. (Tony Barrett) Found that browsing a RAWK thread, presumably it's in tomorrow's paper because its not off his twitter.

  16. Sorry, thought I posted the link. It's Andy Hunter in the Guardian.
  17. Liverpool hope to agree the transfer of Philippe Coutinho on Wednesday despite the midfielder's claim that he wants to stay and fight for his place at Internazionale. The Anfield club had a bid of around £8m rejected for the 20-year-old Brazilian last week but negotiations have continued and Liverpool are confident an improved offer will be acceptable. Coutinho signed for Inter from Vasco da Gama as a 16-year-old, though he remained with the Brazilian club until he was 18, and is regarded as one of the most promising young players in Serie A. Despite that reputation, Inter are considering the approach from Anfield as they look to improve their finances. The player has placed responsibility for any transfer firmly on the Italian club by stating that he wishes to impress the coach Andrea Stramaccioni. Coutinho told Sky Italia: "The Liverpool offer? I'm happy with these offers, because it means I am doing my job well. But I think Inter have faith in me and I want to show my value here. I don't feel that I'm on my way out. I hope to stay at Inter. The young players feel the faith of the coach and of the club." The Liverpool defender Danny Wilson, meanwhile, has admitted he has little future at the club under Brendan Rodgers. The Scotland international has made only nine first team appearances for Liverpool since joining the club for an initial £2m from Rangers in 2010 and is now on loan at Hearts until the summer. The 21-year-old, who has not made a senior appearance for Rodgers, said: "It's going to be difficult for me to have a future at Liverpool. They have four centre-backs there who are fighting for two positions really. You see players who played in past seasons not playing as much now. I have not really managed to force my way in. My only thinking now is to get out and play and what happens, happens."
  18. Brendan Rodgers is confident of completing the £8 million signing of Inter Milan midfielder Phillipe Coutinho before Liverpool's FA Cup tie with Oldham. Rodgers is in advanced negotiations with Inter over a deal to sign the Brazil international and Liverpool expect to seal their second January signing by the end of this week. Liverpool's first bid was rejected last week but they are ready to offer a £6 million down payment with further instalments taking the transfer closer towards a final £8 million. Talks between the two clubs resumed on Monday and barring any late hitches, Coutinho should join Daniel Sturridge as the latest arrival at Anfield this month. Coutinho's versatility appeals to Rodgers, the Liverpool manager, as he can play in central midfield and as a second striker. The 20 year-old was signed from Brazilian club Vasco da Gama and given his first-team debut by former Liverpool manager Rafael Benítez and has established a reputation as one of Serie A's most prodigious young talents. His age also fits the profile for Rodgers, who could still move for Blackpool and England under-21 international winger Thomas Ince before the transfer window closes next week. Coutinho could even make his Liverpool debut against Oldham in the FA Cup fourth round at Boundary Park on Sunday. Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers hopes to secure Inter Milan's Phillipe Coutinho ahead of Oldham Cup tie - Telegraph Be interesting to see the times' take on it, usually as reliable as they come regarding us.
  19. We really are going to great lengths to call out Blackpool aren't we.
  20. How do we know what Liverpool offered him? It could have been 5-10k below Gala at 80/90/100k, it could have been 50 or 60k below Gala. Nobody knows. But if we weren't going to pay him close to parity with them then he was never going to come.
  21. Recently signed Jones on a new contract too.
  22. @SiClancy: According to the French paper Le 10 Sport, Liverpool have submitted a £5m bid to Ajaccio for Mexican goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa. It wouldn't be a transfer window without us signing a goalkeeper.
  23. Against the dross yes. He put in his usual invisible man shift at Old Trafford last week.
