Offal Report Liverpool U21s suffered a 6-1 defeat away at Wigan Athletic in their EFL Trophy opener on Tuesday night. Leighton Clarkson had given the young Reds a one-goal lead prior to half-time before their League One opposition went on to stage a second-half comeback. Goals from Kal Naismith, Joe Garner and braces from Charlie Jolley and Ollie Crankshaw ultimately secured the three points for the hosts. Liverpool will look to respond in their next Northern Group D fixture when they travel to Tranmere Rovers next Tuesday. Surviving an early scare as Wigan hit the post, Barry Lewtas' charges took control of the first-half proceedings. Jack Bearne and Liam Millar went close to opening the scoring during the first period before the deserved opener finally arrived in the 44th minute. Good play from Millar on the left saw him put the ball across the face of goal, with Clarkson arriving at the back post at the right moment to convert. But Wigan returned from the interval rejuvenated and turned the contest around completely by the hour mark. It was level moments after the restart when substitute Naismith rose highest on a corner before he then turned provider by supplying the cross for Jolley's header. They added a third six minutes later when Tom Clayton headed a lofted ball over the onrushing Kelleher, allowing Jolley to tap into an empty net. And to complete the game's scoring, Crankshaw netted with a drilled finish and header, with a Garner penalty sandwiched in between. Liverpool U21s: Kelleher, Sharif, Savage, Clayton, Beck, Cain (Balagizi, 84), Clarkson, Woodburn, Bearne (Dixon-Bonner, 64), Longstaff (O’Rourke, 84), Millar. Unused substitutes: Jaros, Quansah, Bradley.

The side put out against Wigan had 2 changes from the 23's side that started in the defeat to Derby, Kelleher in for Jaros, and Sharif in for Bradley. There were a couple of lads from the 18s on the bench tonight, Balagizi and Quansah. Kelleher playing tonight confirms to me that Adrian will be between the posts at Lincoln on Thursday. Sharif is not long back from a long term injury, so needed the game time. The absence of Rhys Williams in the game against Derby and tonight against Wigan is intriguing to me. I'm sure I heard Steve Hunter mention that Rhys was up training with the first team which is why he missed the game against Derby. Rhys had a pretty successful loan spell at Kidderminster last season, and for me, would be a better option to play against Lincoln than Koumetio and/or Van Den Berg.

    Upcoming Games

The GF has threads for upcoming films and TV shows, so the TNF should really have a gaming equivalent. I originally posted this in the PlayStation 4 thread, however it makes sense to me to post it in here as well to kick off the thread. Middle-earth: Shadow of War has been officially announced and is scheduled to release on the 22nd of August. Announcement trailer below, with the gameplay reveal due on March 8th.

Offal A late flurry of goals saw Liverpool U23s wrap up their pre-season programme with a 4-0 win over Huddersfield Town on Monday afternoon. Barry Lewtas’ side scored four times in the final 16 minutes of the friendly in Kirkby in their final warm-up game before kicking off the 2020-21 campaign with a mini-derby against Everton this Sunday. The young Reds had been frustrated during a goalless first half at the Academy, with Paul Glatzel, Liam Millar, Luis Longstaff and Jake Cain either off target or denied by the goalkeeper from the best of their chances. But their efforts eventually yielded significant rewards in the closing stages and it was Glatzel who broke the deadlock from the penalty spot in the 74th minute. Fidel O’Rourke was felled inside the Huddersfield area and his fellow forward stepped up to coolly send the ‘keeper the wrong way and put the home team ahead. It was the catalyst for a surge of goals, with Liverpool’s lead doubled on 80. Cain’s cute pass from the edge of the box invited Tom Clayton to overlap along the left-hand side and his delivery was slotted in by Elijah Dixon-Bonner. The same scorer soon increased the advantage to three. Leighton Clarkson’s defence-splitting pass freed Longstaff on goal and though he and Dixon-Bonner were thwarted by the goalkeeper, the latter finally put the ball in. And Lewtas’ charges added a fourth with 86 on the clock, Cain again involved in the build-up as his cross from the left allowed Longstaff to strike and seal another encouraging display.

Offal Liverpool U18s made it three wins out of three so far in pre-season as Leicester City were beaten 4-1 at the Academy on Tuesday. Marc Bridge-Wilkinson’s side have now racked up 14 goals and conceded only one in their warm-up games for the 2020-21 campaign. The young Reds started brightly in Kirkby but the visitors came back into the contest and enjoyed the clearest opportunity to open the scoring when a penalty was given against Jakub Ojrzynski. But the Liverpool goalkeeper made immediate amends by saving the spot-kick. The hosts soon capitalised further by taking the lead themselves with 24 on the clock. Layton Stewart’s determination allowed him to send in a pull-back from the right that invited Tom Hill to convert. Stewart made it 2-0 himself 10 minutes before the interval with an audacious finish, the 17-year-old striker beating the ‘keeper with an outstanding lob from the right-hand side. And the Reds produced a third three minutes later as a flowing team move involving Conor Bradley, Stewart and James Balagizi resulted in another pull-back to Hill and his second goal of the game. Bridge-Wilkinson’s charges extended their advantage in the early stages of the second half, with Luke Chambers’ foray down the left leading to a cross that drifted straight into the net. Leicester partly reduced their arrears with a penalty but it was Liverpool’s day in the Kirkby sunshine and the U18s continue to build up nicely for the new season.

Offal Layton Stewart netted a hat-trick as Liverpool U18s beat Crewe Alexandra 5-0 in a friendly at the Academy on Sunday. The Scouse striker - who last month signed a new contract with the club - was joined on the scoresheet by Tom Hill and Mateusz Musialowski as the young Reds' pre-season preparations continued with a resounding win. Hill opened the scoring shortly before the half-hour mark by converting Luke Chambers' cross in emphatic fashion, before Stewart's fine finish made it 2-0 after good work from Harvey Blair. Marc Bridge-Wilkinson's team extended their lead on the stroke of half-time when Stewart pounced on the rebound after Conor Bradley's header had been saved. Stewart completed his treble in the 62nd minute when he cut inside from the left and found the net with the aid of a deflection, and new arrival Musialowski's impressive cameo off the bench was crowned with a neat finish late on.

Had some real bad luck with injuries when out on loan at Oxford. Broke one of his feet early in the campaign, and when he came back around the Christmas period, he picked up the same injury, but on his other foot, which then kept him out for the remainder of the regular season. He did return just in time for the playoffs which he was involved in - He started the first leg of the semi-final against Pompey, playing 55 minutes, but was on the bench for the second leg and the subsequent final that they lost to Wycombe (he came off the bench very late in both these games, but did convert Oxford's first penalty in their semi-final shootout win against Pompey). Definitely a candidate for another loan spell away from the club. Hopefully an injury free loan too. He's been linked to a couple of League One clubs, Pompey most notably, though there are some rumours knocking around that he's wanted by clubs in Belgium, Holland & Germany too. I'm a fan of Woodburn and do hope that this coming season is far more productive for him, and subsequently us.

Offal Liverpool will face Port Vale, Tranmere Rovers and Wigan Athletic in the group stage of the 2020-21 EFL Trophy. The Reds were drawn into Group D of the northern section of the competition, which sees teams play each other once only. As an invited club from the Premier League, a Liverpool U21 side are scheduled to play each of their three group matches away from home. The winners and runners-up in each group for both the northern and southern sections will progress to the last 32, with the tournament then undertaking a knockout format. Fixture details will be confirmed on Liverpoolfc.com in due course.
