Inception. A worthy attempt to do something different in a big blockbuster movie. Di Caprio and the gang enter people's dream world and steal ideas and secrets. They are required to do something much more challenging when they are asked to plant an idea (an inception) in someones mind by entering their dream state. This requires them to go three levels into their consciousness (i.e. a dream within a dream within a dream). Stunning visually. An intriguing premise. However, the script is clunky and the story is never really sharp enough or clearly focussed (even allowing for the initially three levels of consciousness which becomes four). A suitably ambiguous end with a film wide open to interpretation. 7/10. It would have been a 5.5 or a but for the worthy ambition

Predators....good in parts but very tedious in others. Very little gore, action or aliens. Piss poor dialogue. Embarrassing to wath Adrien Brody in this. Story almost identical to Predator (except the alien safari theme). Better than the AVP films but so is VD. 4.5/10

Lymelife...a coming of age drama set at the end of the 1980s in Long Island. A lad in his mid/late teens is discovering the imperfections and disappointments of adult life. A very witty, intriguing and beautifully filmed piece. 8/10

For some reason there is one scene in that movie that always cracks me up but I do not know why. Candy is in the car with his niece and she is surly and angry. He asks her why she is angry and then asks "is it the hat? This hat angers a lot of people" Don't ask me why but whenever I see that or think about it I crack up for ages?

MacGruber. A Saturday Night Live film of its sketch which mocks McGyver a 1990s TV programme. I had serious doubts about this and whether they could stretch it to a full film. They did..just! Some very funny parts. Some not so. Kristen Wiig is funny, talented and georgeous. Ever wondered who ate all the pies? The answer is Val Kilmer the fact fecker. 6.5/10

A great US comedy about a bunch of characters at a Community College. I learned of this from teh Aerial Telly site. Simply superb and some parts of it are absolute genius. Get to see this asap! Community review NBC

Black Death...Sean Bean leading some fellow christians during the plague. THey have heard of a village of godless folks whom the plague has not touched because they are in league with the devil. Hence they ride out to rid the world of them. A surprisingly eery, engaging and intelligent film. 7/10

Charlie Brooker has a splendid new comedy panel show on Radio four called So Wrong Its Right. Its good stuff. The episode where Lee Mack rips him to shred for Tweeting is ace. PS. Brooker is in danger of over exposure on TV

I was holidaying in the area and finding someone in that part of Cumbria is not easy. We staying in Uldale. On Wednesday we were driving down the coast and decided to visit somewhere else before Whitehaven otherwise we would have been in the middle of the incident. As it was we were less than half a mile from the incident in Whitehaven when we heard on the car radio that a gunman was on the loose in the area and anyone in that part of Cumbria should stay indoors. I have never turned my car around and left an area so fast in my life.

Will they do the unthinkable and torture his wife and children in front of him? A film about the usefulness of torture and how much we sacrifice when we descend to this level to defend ourselves. Not as good as it should have been. 6/10
