  1. It's the 12th May 1996, a day after Liverpool's defeat to Man U in the F.A Cup Final, you've travelled back in time with all the football knowledge you have gained since then. Somehow you have got a job as Liverpool's Football Director and have convinced David Moores to spend £15m on players. Which players do you and Roy sign?

After looking at who we did sign we actually only spend significant money on Paddy Berger. Terrible transfer window. No wonder we struggled to compete.

Salah with 8 goals already in the league this season, I decided to take a look at how quick he has reached that tally in his other seasons with us.

Last season he did not get there before in the middle of February and only in the 21/22 season did he reach 8 goals before the beginning of November.

23/24: Scored his eight PL goal on the 29th of October

22/23: Scored his eight PL goal on the 13th of February

21/22: Scored his eight PL goal on the 24th of October

20/21: Scored his eight PL goal on the 8th of November

19/20: Scored his eight PL goal on the 14th of December

18/19: Scored his eight PL goal on the 8th of December

17/18: Scored his eight PL goal on the 18th of November

It still feels like he's underrated doesn't it? He's been so good for so long that certainly outside of the club, his achievements don't get the recognition they deserve.

Scores tons of goals and is always available. Probably only be when he's retired when people will look back on his numbers and realise how good he was.

I've never really bought in to that argument.

You could argue that somebody like James Milner was absolutely ran in to the ground but he's still going 20 years later.

Some sports stars just aren't physically cut out to last. I actually think with Owen if we'd used him sparingly, we'd have missed his best years.

Another thing that people never really think about is that in many ways he left us at the right time because he was never going to be suited to the way that Rafa Benitez wanted to play.

I used to think it was a bad idea playing youngsters too much too soon but from what I've read the evidence doesn't back it up. Some players have their peak in early on and some later. We definitely got the very best out of Owen and like you say, if we hadn't have played him that much we would probably have missed out.

  4. Would have loved us to have signed the real Ronaldo before he went to PSV but he probably had his career worked out & that would have just been a stepping stone.

I remember us being linked to Roberto Baggio when he was out of the Inter team. Was desperate for us to sign him and couldn't wait to get his name on my shirt.

The one player I had wanted us to sign as he was my fave non-liverpool player was Jari and luckily we did although a couple of years too late. I could hardly believe it even I saw it in the Echo. Amazing player.

  5. Don't want to think about a time when he's not our keeper. So important that we make the most of him & improve other areas of the team as in two or three years when he's not in our goal, it's going to be even harder to achieve success. By far and away the best keeper we have had and the best the Prem has seen I'd say.

I think we're all agreed that we need another centre back. But we need to be honest about what kind of player we're likely to get.

Virge, we're surely agreed, will play most of the games. Konate, the consensus seems to be, is first choice to partner him, but needs some rest, so he's likely to play, what - 75 per cent of games, at best?

So who do we need? Again, the consensus seems to be that Matip is no longer good enough, and neither, often enough, is Gomez. So presumably we should be aiming for an affordable and available CB - ideally under 28 - who is better than Matip or Gomez, but who'll not resent too much being limited to, barring an injury crisis, about twenty-five per cent of all games.

That's a pretty limited market as far as I can see. Is there a realistic target?

If we are continuing with the current tactics then a left sided centre back who is comfortable in the left back position would I think be the priority. Don't think the way we are currently playing is helping Robbo much.

I've said it before but all transfers should be agreed before the window ever even opens, bar two things:

    1. the medical

    2. the formal signature

Agree with this 100%. There's nothing stopping clubs from sorting out their transfers outside of the window. I just think the whole thing is bizarre.

With one week left of the window I think we can say that a lot will happen in the next few days. We are now at the time in which both buying and selling clubs have to decide on who to go for and who to sell. The deadline is near. Will be an interesting week.

They should make the transfer window seven days long. Clubs sit around ; seemingly fuck about for months & then all of a sudden spring in to action with 48hrs to go. I'm sure lots of stuff is going on behind closed doors but the whole transfer market scene seems so unprofessional & a load of bollocks for the most part.

Biggest rebuild ever it was touted as. We've spent about 55m net.

All this talk about midfielders, and all these caveats being thrown out to justify the club's lack of spend and decisiveness, can somebody please explain to me why the fuck we haven't bought a single defender?

Robbo, Matip and Gomez are all either on their last legs or shite. Virg is in his final couple of years too. We therefore have Konate and half of Trent (if he decides he can be arsed to be a right back).

There are so many fucking great young defenders out there, a lot of them on release clauses too. "The market is crazy" rhetoric doesn't fly.

And the market isn't going to become any less crazy. The Saudi Clubs are only dipping their toes In the water st the moment. They'll come for the likes or Salah soon enough.

This window started with so much promise. Their were defensive minded midfielders out there that we could have boxed off early but decided to penny pinch.

Now with not long to go, I'd say it's Imperative that we sign at least one centre back. Matip will go next summer anyway, Gomez is a bit shite and Robbo is not the answer for the new tactics.
