  1. Been thinking about posting in this thread but always feel like a wanker for saying this. However, everyone knows I’m a wanker anyway, so why not… 44 years ago my folks were told I likely wouldn’t even make 10 years of age. 11 years ago I was told I had around 2 years left. 4 years ago I was literally 15 minutes with the surgeon already in theatre from being cut right down the middle, intestines out and a stoma bag. 3 years ago I was told I was imminently going to need to go on the double lung transplant list. Now, thanks to a medical breakthrough, I’m deadlifting to Eye Of The Tiger in a commercial strength and conditioning gym and recently fucked a 26 year old who looks like Naomi Campbell. Never had such consistent health and energy in my whole life and am being able to think freely about building a future for the first time. Genuinely feel like Red when he gets paroled in Shawshank. It has been one fucking long uphill slog, 44 years it took me to get here, but if you can just hang on and stay in the game long enough, you never know how things can turn for you. Keep on keeping on. Never give in. Set up a Tinder account with a fake age.

  2. I don't post an awful lot, and haven't done for a long time but I did make a few posts about how bad the start of my year was. I had really bad covid which affected me physically and mentally, was at a point where I couldn't see my bird or anything because I thought I would be horrible to her, didn't see my son either. Lost all my confidence, some days couldn't tell if I was awake or in a dream because of the Insomina, anxiety off the scale, just utterly horrendous, aside from when me ma died the worst time in my life. My work was really supportive but I thought I was done , didn't think I'd ever get to a point where I could work again, two months on with the help of medication I eventually went back to a phased return, and a month after that despite still not really having any confidence back I applied for a lead managers position and got it, I'm now blagging that role every single day, you really don't ever know what's around the corner.

  4. In a statement released on Tuesday, Rooney explained her decision, writing that while she was “very proud” to have had her previous novels translated into Hebrew, she has for now “chosen not to sell these translation rights to an Israeli-based publishing house”. The statement expressed her desire to support the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions movement (BDS), a campaign that works to “end international support for Israel’s oppression of Palestinians and pressure Israel to comply with international law”. “Earlier this year, the international campaign group Human Rights Watch published a report entitled A Threshold Crossed: Israeli Authorities and the Crimes of Apartheid and Persecution. That report, coming on the heels of a similarly damning report by Israel’s most prominent human rights organization B’Tselem, confirmed what Palestinian human rights groups have long been saying: Israel’s system of racial domination and segregation against Palestinians meets the definition of apartheid under international law,” Rooney’s statement read. “Of course, many states other than Israel are guilty of grievous human rights abuses. This was also true of South Africa during the campaign against apartheid there. In this particular case, I am responding to the call from Palestinian civil society, including all major Palestinian trade unions and writers’ unions.” She went on to acknowledge that not everyone will agree with her, but that she did not feel it would be right to collaborate with an Israeli company “that does not publicly distance itself from apartheid and support the UN-stipulated rights of the Palestinian people. “The Hebrew-language translation rights to my new novel are still available, and if I can find a way to sell these rights that is compliant with the BDS movement’s institutional boycott guidelines, I will be very pleased and proud to do so. In the meantime I would like to express once again my solidarity with the Palestinian people in their struggle for freedom, justice and equality”, she said.

  5. Finishing a job. I can’t remember a time when I wasn’t part way through decorating my girls bedroom. It’s been going on for at least 14 years, and she’s only 9. But yesterday I finished, and today I bought her a new duvet cover set, and the bloody thing is done.

  13. This is always worth watching. Life can be pretty scary for Israeli civilians, but fuck me it's grim for Palestinians. I don't have any solution to this. (Obviously. I'd be a right cunt if I did have one and I was keeping it to myself.) The two-state solution, along 1967 borders, is probably the best hope, but it's dead in the water unless the Israeli state radically changes.

  15. Ha. It’s exciting times in medicine mate. Working on the underlying cause of a genetic disease rather than reactively dealing with symptoms. Obviously I had a special interest in this one and took part in drug trials etc in the earlier stages of these type of modulators being developed, so I know a little more about it, but hopefully it won’t be the last chronic illness to be improved in the coming years.

  16. I've actually written something along those lines in this week's diary. It's partly tongue in cheek, but Messi does seem like the kind of bitchy, spoilt little shit to bear a grudge over something like that. I have nothing to base that on other than the impression I have of him, but seeing someone else say it now just makes me convinced I'm right. There's no way the two of us can be wrong. I also think we've missed Gini in the two big home games we've drawn. There's no way we wouldn't miss him, those were the games when he was always fucking immense. I'm not complaining about him being allowed to leave or even that we didn't buy a replacement. I'm just saying, we missed him in those big games because that's where he always excelled.

  18. I despair at how far this nation has fallen over the past few years and nothing encapsulates it more than the fat dickhead at a billionairs holday villa, a billionaire he put in to the House of Lords when said billionaire lost his seat at election, painting on the day his callous mishandling of public health that led to the deaths of thousands needlesly was announced, the same day his former closest aide claimed he didn't have a clue what was in the Brexit deal and they never intended to keep it any way as breaking international law in a toodler level hissy fit is fine. All of this is just the tip of an iceberg at the rank incompetence and callousness shown by these chancers and with every other struggle that is going on that they have created and presided over this is how he spends his time, without a care nor regret. Fuck him, fuck them.

  19. Another international break completely killing the momentum of the club season. International breaks are far too frequent these days, and the recent ones have the adding 'bonus' of scheduling combined with quarantine regulations seeing to it that many players will be missing. Not just for us, but for a number of clubs. In what way is it right that FIFA, UEFA, the Premier League and the national associations have a greater say than the clubs who pay players' wages, the coaches who are unable to prepare effectively, or the players who just don't get a breather? How stupid is it to schedule a lunchtime fixture on a Saturday after an international break? Anyway: Intelligence. Moxie. Skill. Tenacity. Ingenuity. Luck. Life. Superiority. Talent. Accuracy. Nous. Drive. Instinct. Nerve. Gumption. I don't ask for much (and even less than usual given the circumstances). Our last appearance in this fixture was just before the pandemic hit in early 2020. While we'd continued to rack up wins over the preceding week, we weren't looking anywhere near as assured and full of beans as earlier in the season. It came to a head in this fixture when a disastrous second half performance saw us on the end of a 3-0 hiding that was fully merited. Ismaila Sarr bagged a couple, and Troy Deeney with his bee-stung face got the other. We were uncharacteristically sloppy defensively and uncharacteristically impotent up front. It was the start of a mini-slump that led to us being knocked out of Europe and the FA Cup within the next fortnight. The lockdown, while frustrating and with the possibility of null and void being shouted loudly by voices that couldn't give a shit about public health and were more concerned about us running away with the league, at least gave the players a chance to recalibrate. That first lockdown gave everybody time to think. Well, at least those who remained personally unaffected by the pandemic. Back in the days when fixture congestion seemed to be less of an issue, and the only pandemic talk was by people scared that HIV and AIDS would become too prevalent to control, Liverpool's new-look attack of Aldo, Barnesy and Beardo travelled to Vicarage Road in mid-February 1988 to take on a team that had recently sacked their manager. Dave Bassett had been booted out with the club bottom of the league and heading for the drop. They'd fallen away significantly since the Graham Taylor era. Selling Barnes was undoubtedly a factor, but I doubt even they knew his game would go up several levels following his move to Merseyside. Digger was the best player in the country by a mile at the time, which is saying a lot since the players around him were no slouches. We were absolutely flying in the league and dismantled the Hornets 4-1 on an absolute quagmire of a pitch where all the available grass was between the touchline and the stands. Beardsley fired in the opener, Aldridge bundled in the second, Beardsley dribbled around the keeper for the third, and Barnes scored the 4th against his old club with a close range finish after the ball was nodded down to him just inside the six yard box. There was time for a consolation from Luther Blissett, but Watford had been well and truly outclassed by us. They weren't the first and they wouldn't be the last in 1987/88. Or the Eighties in general for that matter. The big draw at the box office in February 1988 was Good Morning, Vietnam, starring Robin Williams on top form and directed by Barry Levinson, who would go on to make Rain Man the following year. Williams had a gift for delivering funny and poignant in the same role, and this time he played a DJ for the Armed Forces Radio Service, trying to deliver news, comedy and music to entertain the troops in Saigon, going against the wishes of some of his superiors who didn't like his attitude and casual insubordination ("You are in more dire need of a blowjob than any white man in history"). For the audience (and the grunts on the front line) he was easy to warm to and side with as he balanced trying to do his job and see the humanity in the 'enemy'. It's part of a slew of 'Nam-set films released from the mid-80s onwards, a lot of which were of extremely high quality. War films in general, when the story is interesting, told well and with amazing cinematography, can still be utterly compelling. Anyway, back to Watford. New manager bounce incoming? It's generally hard to tell but the combination of new manager up against a Liverpool team missing a number of players, playing after an international break and in an early kick-off is what twats like Jake Humphrey would be only to happy to wank off to live on air. We just need to dig deep, do what we are well capable of, and get the result. Dilly Ding Dilly Dong should just be the advertising slogan for a Saigon bank, not a manager the English media have a real love-in for.

  22. Yeah, I'm not really a shithousery mark to be honest. I don't look at the likes of Ramos or Pepe or Diego Costa and think 'aren't he and his shithouse ways hilarious'. Not really of the school of "he would bring your sick mother or child into it if gave him an advantage" being a positive trait in a footballer or a human being and struggle to separate the two on/off the field. Some of the greatest players of all time, their will to win hasn't made them horrible bastards like Suarez in the process. EDIT: The Diouf "sewer rat" comment was made by Neil Warnock for his on-field behaviour. https://talksport.com/football/5884/warnock-el-hadji-diouf-sewer-rat/

  23. From time to time, the original lyrics to classic songs come up at memorabilia auctions and it's interesting to see how the songwriter's thoughts developed. (For example, the original lyrics of "In My Life" had "some for better" crossed out and replaced with"some for ever, none for better".) I'm pretty sure that any Oasis lyrics wouldn't have any amendments like that, because the first words that pop into Noel's head ("did you ever feel the pain, in the morning rain") make it through to the final song.

  26. Cheers mate. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve had plenty of good periods of health and times during all that, I’ve cracked on with it. Just that the threat was always there and the dips were severe, relentless and draining. Particularly as it sinks its teeth in more the older you get. This here now is like when we get one of those rare summers of weeks long sun, so you can let’s say plan on a Tuesday to have a barbecue that Saturday, rather than the standard year’s looking out the curtains pensively an hour before. Consistent and without taking it for granted, able to make some longer-term plans and feel peaceful about life. Long may it continue.

  29. Isn't there something to be said for not tolerating mentalism? Because of social media and there being more outlets for 'fringe' opinions which in turn generate clicks, we've just humoured these people too much. They don't deserve a voice and they don't deserve respect. We've got to find a way to put them back in their box, playing with model railway sets or listening to CB radios or whatever it is they used to do, safely out of sight and out of mind.

  31. Said it a million times. It is beyond baffling how millions of people see him as a good fit to run the country. I wouldnt trust him to look after a goldfish Its always fun when engaging with a tory to ask what his greatest attributes are,or his greatest achievement. I thought the Cummings stuff would be the turning point,I would have thought that the fact that he was happy to sacrifice countless old people, would mark a sea change ,but it's barely made a dent. The media have fully sold this bumbling buffoon image but he has got the empathy of your average serial killer. Said it the other day but the domestic incident a while ago has been erased from history. Every word out of his fucking mouth is a lie and his attitude to violence against women is disgusting. I utterly despise him and if you cant see through him, you are a fucking simpleton.

  35. The sheer incompetence is off the scale. My lad sent all the relevant forms off for his provisional HGV licence 6 weeks ago and still hasn't heard anything and yet there are 100,000 vacancies that need to be filled as a matter of urgency. Grant Shapps isn't taking anywhere near enough flak for this. The DVLA, DVSA etc are all under his department and yet the Gov't spin is 'there is a world shortage of HGV drivers'. So fucking do something you bellends, never mind making excuses sat next next to a fucking flag, people have put their names forward to do these jobs, at least give them the opportunity to actually qualify to do them.

  39. Frank makes some excellent points, but I disagree that 1st July 1916 can be pinpointed as the start of the mistrust of the ruling class. That was indeed a terrible day, but the impact of the casualties was localised, most poignantly in the areas where the “Pals Battalions” were raised. In the days before radio and National newspapers, not to mention heavy censorship of military information, most of the population were simply unaware of the disaster at the time. The War didn’t discriminate and the ruling classes (or at least their offspring) also suffered badly. To name just one - the Prime Minister’s son, Raymond Asquith, was killed later in the Somme battle. I think disillusionment started after the Great War was over. Returned servicemen were poorly treated, and the whole “Homes Fit for Heroes” plan from the then Liberal Government proved to be an empty promise. There was mass unemployment in the 1920s, followed by even worse times in the Depression. Any person who participated as an adult in the Second World War had experience of the 1920s and 1930s, so went into WW2 with few illusions. My parents were part of the war generation, and they told me that the reason for the landslide Labour election victory in 1945 was that most of the population blamed the Conservative party (primarily Stanley Baldwin and Neville Chamberlain) for getting the country into another World War by not standing up to Hitler earlier.

He's the best young player I've ever seen and, if not for weird circumstances, would have come back to Liverpool long before he was forced to choose between Man United and Stoke. Michael Owen scores the goals Halle-lu-uh-yah.
