  1. It's funny how the people who bleat on about the war the most are the Daily Mail - who were big fans of Hitler and fascism itself - and the Tories, who resisted Churchill being made PM and agitated behind his back for a separate peace with Hitler. Pre-war was marked by British industry actively selling components to the Luftwaffe, knowing full well they were going to be heading this way anytime soon, while the early stages of the war were marked by a series of disasters due largely to the fact we had people in charge purely because they went to private school, and it was only when they were quietly moved to the side and replaced with people who actually knew what they were doing that tactical operations stopped being shit. It's no coincidence perhaps that Britain's greatest wartime achievement was getting its entire army stuck on a beach due to the planning of blue-blooded buffoons, then them being rescued by pensioners on narrowboats. I'd say the greatest thing about Britain when it comes to wars, be it pandemics or armed conflicts, is that it survives IN SPITE of its ruling class, not because of it, whether it's nurses and shop staff hurtling into the front lines, or fellas running around Burma in their bare feet while General Cuntflaps snorts snuff and sips Bombay Sapphire three thousand miles away.

  3. Monday Oct 4: This international shit is getting beyond a joke now. Honestly, it’s fucking outrageous that we’re expected to let our players go nd play for their country and then have to do without them for two games while they quarantine. We pay their wages, their international sides don’t. So if Brazil have to do without all of their players who make a living in Europe, tough shit. I can’t believe the clubs are actually willing to accept this you know. It’s mad. One club alone can’t take a stand against FIFA, but the leagues can. From our perspective, Alisson and Fabinho will miss Watford away (a game in which we got spanked last time) and Ateltico away (another game in which we were spanked) because Brazil have called them up and they can’t refuse to go because FIFA will ban them. The only good thing to come out of this was Klopp’s revelation the other day that 99% of our squad are double jabbed. His comments on that were fucking outstanding, we’re so lucky to have him. Not just as a manager, but as a man. He’s great. Someone you can feel proud of. That’s our leader and he’s fucking immense. Compare him with some of the absolute pricks at other clubs. Still, his comments did immediately have me wondering who the “one percent” is. “99%” basically means there’s only one who isn’t vaxxed. If Lovren was still here it would defo have been him, and maybe Shaq might have been influenced by him if he was still here. But they’re gone, and Klopp said he didn’t even need to talk to the squad about it as they did it themselves. Alisson’s missus is a doctor or something, and the Brazilian lads are all vaxxed so it’s none of them. Klopp didn’t say this in as many words but the impression he gave was “everyone who matters has been jabbed” so that leads me to the obvious conclusion that the one member of the squad refusing to be vexed is…..Loris Karius. I hope so anyway, because nothing against him personally, it’s just that he’s the only one that I wouldn’t be disappointed in as I don’t care about him either way. Same applies to Naby too, but I don’t think it’s him. Tuesday Oct 5: Getting a bit bored with all this talk of Mo being under-rated, under-appreciated, not given the recognition he deserves etc. All I’ve been reading these last few weeks is how he’s the best player in the Premier League and possibly the best player in the world currently. How can you be described as the world’s best but be under-rated? I actually think I preferred it when he was under-rated because every time Carragher or Ferdinand or whoever says it, you know his agent is sticking another zero on the end of the contract demands. It’s a problem for us because while it’s great he’s taken his game up to the level we’ve seen this season, it’s also pricing him out of Liverpool as I just don’t see the club paying him the salary that the best player in the world commands. In his time here he’s been top three in the world in his first season, a minimum of top ten in all the others and currently he’s probably one or at worst two (I’ve not seen enough of Messi at PSG to comment). So his agent is more than justified in asking for a salary that would make him top five in the world. Will FSG sanction that? There’s nothing in their time here to suggest they will, but that doesn’t mean they can’t make an exception. It’s a bad situation for the fans though as this is becoming more of an issue by the week. And although they were on a smaller scale, we’ve seen these scenarios before with Big Sexy (Emre) and Little Sexy (Gini), where it drags on with no deal being done and before you know it it’s the last six months of the contract and Klopp is having to convince everyone that they player is still committed despite the fact he’s off. Wednesday Oct 6: Another PL player is arrested on sex charges. A Brighton player, widely rumoured to be Bissouma. Maybe that’s why no-one went for him in the summer? If he’s a bit of a bad apple that would explain it. Clubs do more and more research into what players are like off the field now before spending massive amounts of money on them, and given some of the things that have happened recently (Mendy and Sigurdsson are both £50m signings remember) I imagine some serious vetting is going to be going on from now on. I hadn’t watched MOTD from last weekend until today when I did the round up, so I hadn’t seen Klopp’s interview post match from Sunday. I loved this line about the atmosphere and how it went a bit flat “People showed up really hungry and we delivered cold chips”. Sensational stuff. What a fucking man. What a character. He’s just the best isn’t he? Wait, Divock is being linked with Barca? This is just too good. I don’t know if it’s us taking the piss by offering him to them or if they really are in such dire straights they think he can help them. Their fans would fucking hate him. Not only will they still be bearing a grudge over what he did to them, but when you think about the forwards they’ve had, to end up with Div is just something they wouldn’t be able to handle. I hope this is bullshit because, and I mean this in all sincerity, Divock deserves better than that. While Div’s being linked with a move away, there’s talk today that we want some cat named Dusan Vlahovic from Fiorentina. No idea if he’s any good or not but he’s rated at nearly £80m and lots of top clubs are sniffing around. He’s been described as the ‘new Zlatan’ though so that’s a hard pass from me I’m afraid. Thursday Oct 7: You know, I can’t fucking believe that Newcastle takeover has been the go ahead. I feel genuinely sick about this. Sick and angry. And disillusioned. There are so many reasons why it shouldn’t have been given the green light but the two that jump out are how are they seen as fit and proper owners, and how the fuck have the other clubs stood by to let this happen? The PL know these people are cunts. They also know that “assurance” they got was fucking bullshit and there’s nothing whatsoever to stop them spending whatever the fuck they like. I feel like this is a massive nail in the coffin of footy now. And you only have to look at the reaction of the Newcastle fans to know how bad this is going to get. As I keep saying, along with Everton these are the absolute worst fans this could happen to. As much as I despise City, their fans have not actually been bad at all when you consider everything. In fact, the more I think about it, the more I actually think they deserve credit for not being the massive cunts that most other sets of fans would be. If you think I’m giving them too much credit, just watch how the Geordies carry on from now on and you’ll see. It’s already started, hundreds of them turning up at St James’ tonight to pay homage to their new Saudi overlords. Cunts. Maybe some City fans acted like that, but most didn’t and they’re not singing songs every week about how rich they are. I fucking guarantee Newcastle fans will be doing that shit. The media reaction isn’t helpful either. Instead of uproar, we’ve got lowest common denominator twats like Sky Sports News speculating about what kind of super team the Saudi’s will assemble. It’s sickening, this shit is being normalised like it’s ok. There should be outrage, instead there’s excitement. It’s happened with City and that was bad enough but this is a whole other level. The Saudis are much worse than City’s ownership and they’re much richer too. And the press and pundits can get to fuck with all this “the fans deserve success” and the “poor long suffering Newcastle fans” narrative. You really don’t have to look very far to see fans who are more long suffering than Newcastle. Try a few miles down the road, where you’ll find League One Sunderland. That’s before we even mention Bury, Bolton, Derby, Leeds, Blackburn and all the other clubs who have been fucked over by shitty owners. So spare me the “poor Newcastle fans” bollocks. As for what they ‘deserve’, why do they deserve success more than anyone else? Because the North East is a ‘footballing hotbed’ of course. Again, get to fuck. I’m not questioning the passion of Sunderland and Newcastle fans, but this notion they care more than fans in other parts of the country is daft. Newcastle wear that “loyalest supporters” tag like a badge of honour because they’ve got fuck all else going on, but just because they wear footy shirts to funerals, weddings, to go the shops, to go to dinner and basically everywhere they go, doesn’t make them more “loyal” fans than anyone else. It makes them bellends. I had no time for them before this, but now I’m really going to fucking hate Newcastle fans. They’re already wearing masks with the head Saudi fella’s face on it, and there’ll be fucking thousands of them dressed like Arabs this weekend. The absolute fucking worst. “Amanda” can go and fuck herself too, the twat. Friday Oct 8: Ok so my second question yesterday has now been answered. I wondered why on earth the clubs would go along with this and it seems that they didn’t. Apparently all 19 are furious about it and are demanding answers from the PL. Couple of thoughts on that. They can’t say they were taken by surprise as this has been in the news for weeks. So they knew what was going on, which means their anger just be related to a final decision being made without them being involved in it. You have to wonder how anyone could let the Saudis pass a “fit and proper” owners test. Someone’s been paid off here, that’s the only way this makes any sense. Of course Newcastle fans continue to act like the biggest cunts in the world. I’m just completely sickened by them. I said all along this is how they’d be but the truth is they’re even worse. Even I didn’t think they’d be THIS shameless, and outside of Sunderland I doubt there’s anyone with a lower opinion of them than me. One of their fanzines are selling t-shirts with a fella sat on a camel holding a Saudi flag, and the caption “Saudi Mags”. This only the start. We’re 24 hours in and already I’ve seen more shit than I can handle. Mind you, 95% of it has been sent to me by my Mackem brother-in-law who is REALLY not handling this well, as you can imagine. You know what would fix this? If the other 19 clubs just refused to play until the Saudis are fucked off. I’m serious. There’s no Premier League without the other clubs so if they stick together they can basically do anything. They won’t do it, because nobody has got anybody balls. They’ll cry and moan about it but won’t do what it takes to stop it, and in a few years they’ll all be thinking “why did we let this fox in the henhouse?” Except Everton. They’ll be singing “Howay the lads” and wearing Newcastle shirts because the Geordies are stopping us winning the league. ….and that was the week that was.

  5. During the war we were asked to pull together, stop complaining, put up with hardships and, if necessary, make the ultimate sacrifice in order to defeat the danger posed by a facist regime from a foreign land. Today we are being asked the same in order to support a facist regime from within our own Islands. They may not be dropping physical bombs on us but they’re certainly a threat to our lives and liberty. I vote we tell them to go bollocks.

I love Hear you Me and JEW are one of my favourite bands, also love the others but I have had to go with Brothers in Arms as it just reminds me of days growing up, being in my dad's car whilst the album was on constant repeat. There will be a time when my dad will no longer be here and I reckon when I hear that song I'll be a blubbering wreck.

  10. Blitz spirit? Fucking hell. For people like this, the war is seen as something like Allo Allo. They should be tied to a chair and forced to watch The World at War. This, sadly, is more realistic of what was happening to many normal people- Durning Road disaster 1940 An estimated 300 people were sheltering in the basement of the three-storey Ernest Brown Junior Instructional College when it was struck in the early hours. Among those sheltering were workers from nearby factories and passengers who had left trams during the air raid, in addition to local residents. The bombed building crumpled into the shelter with the college furnaces exploding and people scalded by boiling water and steam. Burst gas pipes were set alight while above the basement fire raged amidst the bombed out building. Wardens, firemen and volunteers worked tirelessly to recover survivors and it took two days to pull the bodies out from the shelter. Finally, with the fear of disease rampant, body parts that had not been recovered were covered with lime and the basement was sealed.

  11. 12 Angry Men. Absolute masterpiece that’s still relevant now. Been waiting to see this again for over 20 years and caught it on film 4 the other day. The mrs hates old movies but she’s not well and is couch ridden so as the caring husband I am, I put it on. Even she loved it and surprisingly, didn’t ask one question about what was going on. One of the best movies I’ve ever seen. 10/10

  12. My grandad was the son of County Durham farmers. Low level tories, basically - decent bit of land and an income to match. Then the war came, and he went into the RAF. Five years later and he said he'd realised how much working lads had sacrificed, how reliant the country was on them and how they had more than earned a stake in steering their future. He joined the Labour Party and became a councillor shortly after. Somehow I don't see his Road to Damascus moment featuring in the Mail's version of the war mind.

  13. During the war my grandfather was in Burma fighting on the Tiddim Road. He won the Military Medal during that campaign when he went into action as a Warrant Officer and came out as an acting RSM basically leading because there were no officers left. He was a career soldier and eventually ended up training soldiers as his last posting. After he left the army he threw all his medals away because he felt medals were all bullshit. I’m very proud of him doing that. Daily Mail readers would probably have a different view on that despite the fact that he is a perfect example of what they think Tommy was

  17. Out of interest, in person, or in highlights? Then what are you doing engaging in this thread? Given your logic, 'the best of all time' would only amount to What is the best team of the last 10-15 years (not that that wouldn't also be an interesting thread in itself). The original post was 'All time Liverpool XI' and could also include Ronnie Moran at LB as a candidate, Billy Liddell as a winger, albert Stubbins as a forward; but as none of us can remember them (well, ok, Stringy), so they haven't been mentioned. The tread encourages us to compare apples and oranges. Obviously players now have access to better diet, training, conditioning, analysis tools, footwear, and kits - not to mention footballs: vs Which one would you like to attempt to try to bend a freekick with? Or try to keep goal in the rain wearing this ensemble Or this? I take your point that you can look at how players performed back in their day without being able to imagine how they would perform if they grew up later, fair enough. My point was that technically, I think Clemence was a better keeper than Allison, even without today's access to sports science. I only mentioned how much better he would have been as an aside - not to justify my belief. If you choose to impose your metrics on this thread (which I belive was originated in the hope people would enjoy it), then that is your choice. Personally, I'm going to enjoy the tread that belarus started and not get bogged down in semantics.

When my uncle and his mates were younger they were all into acid and other various narcotics, one day they were all sat there and in coordinated fashion put the telly on mute and started mouthing things to each other to make one of them think he'd lost his hearing. Not into drugs myself but that's the kind of craic I'd be looking for.

  21. I’m half way through this and it’s the most enjoyable podcast I’ve listened to this season out of any. Really really good. I’ve a 3 hour drive to Shannon Airport early tomorrow morning so this will start the journey. Although when Jules announced at the very start that he doesn’t give a shit once a player leaves the club I did question the casting for this episode, but luckily Jules has been really good and I’ve found myself agreeing with him the most I think. So far I’m 100% in agreement with Chris on Suarez. I’m particularly loving the Diouf comment. The Coutinho and Sterling stuff was what I feel too. With Coutinho I’d go further and say that I think Klopp would have identified him early doors as someone he could move on for big money as he didn’t fit the style anyway. I reckon it was all a show about building statues, etc. I’ve stopped it at the Torres chat. I’m looking forward to my early drive now. I suspect the Alonso chat won’t annoy me at all…

  26. Last I heard Brasil were refusing to release PL players early even if they arent scheduled to play in the remaining game. I understood if the non UK player(s) had visited or played in a red list country, they only had to isolate for 5 days if outside the UK. I think the Brasilian players could play for their clubs on the weekend they return but, Brasil's last game is early Friday morning UK time. That gives virtually no time to get back to the UK and be ready to play in a Saturday game. My opinion it is disgraceful ANY club is scheduled to play a 12:30 kick off in such circumstances. But we all know the 14 smaller clubs now rule the PL despite all the bullshit about the 'big 6.'

It's not like we haven't moved the weights in the past. I've thought for a while now we'd get some better fights if we dropped in a new limit at around 17st and above is super heavy.

  37. I don’t think that argument holds any weight at all (no pun intended). It’s universally accepted that he is a brilliant boxer in terms of how he creates angles, the way he delivers his jab etc. He does things that you normally see from lighter fighters. That’s actually unique. The last two fights with Wilder were scrappy in the sense that he completely altered his game plan to just turn the bouts into a war rather than a boxing match. He boxed his head off in the first but got tagged so he realised there’s no point in just boxing his head off you may as well just try to take his head off. He can do everything. He absolutely destroyed Wilder across the three fights. The only thing that allowed Wilder to be in the fights was his freakish power. Aside from that, the trilogy was so one sided.

  38. Michael Owen scored 158 Liverpool goals, won the Ballon d'Or while at Liverpool, won the FA Cup pretty much by himself in 2001 and contributed more than anyone to our treble cup season in 2001. He's the best young player I've ever seen and, if not for weird circumstances, would have come back to Liverpool long before he was forced to choose between Man United and Stoke. Michael Owen scores the goals Halle-lu-uh-yah.

  39. Just finished this in the Oaks Park cafe. This is in the grounds of the now demolished mansion built by the chap who started both the Oaks and Derby horse races. £6.99 including tea. I didn’t realise that the sea of beans were included so now I feel dirty and sordid. It’s granary toast with butter because I’m middle class. Lovely spot all the same though the ambience is slightly ruined by the fact that some poor chap broke into the park at night and hung himself from a tree within sight of the cafe. The grieving family have erected a shrine with a photo which stares across as you eat. Puts my complaints about beans into some sort of context.
