  1. A mate of mine lost his mother a few months ago, he's a functioning alky with a well paid, responsible job, 2 kids whom he sees on weekends. My mate lives probably about 20 miles away, by himself, in a rented bungalow in a small village in the middle of nowhere. About 4 months ago my mate got done for drink driving. No-one got hurt or killed but he was massively over the limit and he had zero reason to drive other than he was a drunken dickhead. My mate was convicted and sentenced a couple of weeks ago; licence disqualified for 18 months, suspended jail sentence. He was fucking lucky imo. Amazingly his long term employer stood by him, he hasn't lost his job, they've sorted him out an electric bike and computer system to allow him to work from home whenever possible. For several months now this mate has threatened to kill himself. I'm part of a WhatsApp group that this mate is in, along with a load of other mates (most of whom know this lad far better than I do), and at 8pm tonight he posts a pic of a load of empty tablet strips, suggesting that he's taken an overdose. I posted a message to the other lads asking them if anybody knew his address and if they did then to phone for an ambulance immediately. Nobody knew it. I phoned my brother (who'd dropped this lad off at home a few times before) but all he could tell me was, "the bungalow to the left of the pub which is at the top of the hill in xxx village" I figured there wouldn't be many pubs in the village and a Google search revealed only 5, one of which is called The Hilltop. I phoned the ambulance service on 999 and this was enough and they were on their way. One of the other lads, who lives in Somerset, also phoned the police. They also had an address for him (2 addresses in fact, but 1 of which matched the address I'd given the emergency services) and they contacted Durham police to send somebody too. My mate sent a picture to the WhatsApp group about an hour ago; he's on a hospital bed, looks like he's pissed himself but he's alive. I'm equal parts ecstatic, relieved and angry as fuck. Angry because my own mother died only a month ago, I've only just been discharged from hospital myself, I'm exhausted by this covid and I was about to go to bed when I flicked through my messages to see if there was anything outstanding. I'm so glad I did. I really have no idea what awaits my mate at this stage, because he lives alone in isolation, with the only support available being us via a flipping WhatsApp group, I imagine that if he's discharged and he's free to return home, then it's only a matter of time before he tries to take his life again. Maybe next time he'll succeed. I'm extremely fucked off, relieved, a little shaken, and fucking knackered. I hope the daft bastard is ok.

  2. The problem with the anti vaccination thing is that it rarely if ever comes from a sane position that can be reasoned with. You could sit these people down with boffins for a presentation and they'd still believe they were lying. This is the untold damage the likes of Trump, YouTube wankers and grifters have done to society. I don't remember anyone not having their BCG when I was in school, and if their parents claimed they suspected it was being used to implant a homing beacon in their kid's arm, social workers and mental health professionals would have rightfully been called forthwith. This is how far we've fallen, we quite frankly indulge, tolerate and even encourage far too much of this shit from dickheads, attention seekers and morons.

  3. Great post. I have a mate who has turned into one of these dickheads. He really pissed me off over the last few weeks. He likes a drink and his favourite tipple is Heineken, so I've started commenting on every one of his photos where he is drinking one with "Heineken causes Penis Shrinkage", and backing up my statement with the assertion that you don't need any evidence these days. If he and people like him can say what they want about Covid19 and vaccines without evidence, then I can reverse that play and say "Heineken Causes Penis Shrinkage" with the aim of getting into his and others' thick heads.

  4. It wouldn’t be compulsory, but you’d lose the right to certain things by not having it. Like you don’t need a driving licence to drive on your own land, but to use the roads you need to have passed the relevant test. That’s not controversial.

  5. Cheers man, I really appreciate that. Not me in The Guardian mate, but I’ve read and been told of loads of cases which match if not exceed my experience of them to date, so there’s been plenty of us singing the same song. There are numerous patients of my clinical team who were listed for a double lung transplant and had been needing 2 week courses of inpatient IVs every 6 weeks for time, who received Kaftrio on compassionate grounds well before it became freely available on the NHS this winter. Many I know of now haven’t been in hospital needing any IVs for a year and are enjoying relative health they couldn’t have dreamt of. My old dear saw this in a magazine recently and sent it to me. All very strange to have lived long enough to witness and benefit from, given the picture in the 1970’s and how new this treatment innovation is still. I’m grateful beyond words, while obviously thinking a lot about the many patients who haven’t enjoyed my good fortune and their families, and not wanting to be too crass given the pain so many are suffering due to Covid.

  6. I'm terrible at these things but here goes. Best Film: I watch very, very few movies now but really enjoyed JoJo Rabbit. Best TV Programme: Preacher. Fucking A. Best Album: Untitled (Black Is) by SAULT. Best Moment: Having had to isolate through all of this, me, the wife and dog managed to get away for a week in October and had a lovely, life affirming time. Worst Moment: Being hospitalised with an infection in June which is ultimately leading me down the path to major surgery, which I'm a bit scared of, in 2021. Best TLW Moment: People have covered them. This community never fails to be anything short of amazing, the support people show each other (including me, someone who posts very little nowadays) is why I'm still here after 16 years.

  10. Cheers Cath and Dec, that means a lot. Suddenly feeling well and having clear lungs as a baseline is very strange after a lifetime, but truly incredible. I could feel the meds working within literally an hour, haven't coughed once since the day after I got them 7 weeks ago - it made my mum well up when I saw her as she's so used to me doing so constantly - and started Couch To 5k last week, which was seriously painful but previously unthinkable. The whole thing is mental, even more so for coming in the middle of Covid, having been locked down on my own for much of the year. To see how happy it's made family and friends even during a shitty time all round has been life-affirming.

  11. County Donegal, way up on the North West. I'm biased but it's a really beautiful county. We have some derelict buildings on the site that we'll demolish and use as stones for a brick wall for the front boundary of the site.

  14. When we signed Matip on a free, not a single soul on this forum suggested him before the rumours started. Same goes with Hyypia, Agger etc. To be honest, I cant think of a CB we have signed the last 20 years, apart from VVD, that people wanted us to sign before it happened. Im pretty sure we will sign a CB, and I have no problem with the fact I have no idea who we will sign at this moment in time, I trust Klopp and Edwards on this one.

  15. Best Film: I don't seem to watch films anymore, too short an attention span. Someone posted a youtube vid that was 1hr 30 minutes recently - it was of a dude living in the wilderness building a log cabin, so that. Best TV Programme: Mr Inbetween Best Album: Doves latest one probably Fittest Bird: A youtuber I follow called Lexie Limitless- Fittest Bloke: I dunno some guy I suppose. Best Moment: My son being born in February Worst Moment: Wife and Mother in Law putting Ketchup on my Christmas dinner Best TLW Moment: Tony complaining about other people's confectionary choices

  18. I don't think it should be made compulsory, as in forcibly jabbing someone (jokes aside) but pubs, airports etc and possibly even schools have every right to treat you as a potential health risk if you've not had one.

  22. We've known since moment that little dinocunt went through VVD that we needed a centre half, and that was compounded when Gomez went down. That is nigh on 3 mths to identify who and get to work to make it happen in Jan. It isn't a case of 'emergency stop gap'.....we literally need to buy a top class regular starter and partner in the long term for VVD for obvious reasons. The injuries have just brought that need forward one window.

  25. yup - it's all being planned and designed right now (some of the house designs are a few pages back in the thread on page 4). dock in the bay is reasonably straight forward and ready to go. there is an existing trail from the main road that needs upgrading/stabilizing to accommodate construction vehicles. solar power array just needs the right installer. septic and water as well. the forest is currently under a provincial forestry plan that reduces our tax bill to basically zero. we can harvest some wood in the future (and i'd like to) but it requires a change to our forestry plan. despite what many might think, we're not minted, so all takes time and careful planning. designing 110 acres of property with amazing views everywhere does have its challenges.

  27. Except they haven’t. Minamino was an impulse purchase because of his release clause. VVD had burnt his bridges at Southampton and both clubs just wanted it done as a premium. When we did really need backup in Roggo’s potential title season they wouldn’t cough up.

  29. They're always slagging him off, but they can fuck off too. Johnson and Cameron were spawned by the system the likes of Heseltine spent their lives protecting and propagating, Eton, backscratching, all that bollocks. The only difference now is Johnson has taken a massive shit on something he values, therefore it's time to open one's mouth. All these cunts are silent though when bedroom tax and food banks and the likes are on the agenda. They're all cunts, past and present.

  31. Just bought a small site in rural Ireland, we can't wait to begin the house planning. Couldn't go too far off grid because we have the kids in school, but it's in the countryside on a road that is only shared by one other house. We monitored the traffic over the space of 18 hours one day and there was only one tractor passed the entire time. The only sounds you can hear are the animals and wildlife in the adjoining fields that stretch for kilometers north, south, east and west. Views over a huge lough and on out over the Atlantic Ocean.

  38. Dejan Lovren has reached out to victims of the earthquake in Croatia by offering 16 families shelter following the tremor which has hit his homeland. The earthquake on Tuesday had a reported magnitude of 6.3 and struck 28 miles southeast of the nation's capital Zagreb in Petrinja, a town of some 25,000 people, leaving one child dead and at least 20 injured. Upon hearing the news, Lovren took to Instagram and posted up a message in Croatian offering rooms at his hotel to those most disadvantaged including families with children. He posted: 'Dear citizens of Petrinja, I am making my hotel in Novalja available to the 16 most endangered families. 'If you need temporary accommodation, contact my team at info@joelhotel.com or Whatsapp 0996769971 with your details. Advantage of families with children.' Lovren's hotel on the Island of Pag and is named after the Zenit defender's children Josip and Elena.'There are not many hotels on the island but this is something different – unique', he said of the hotel back in 2018. 'It's a beauty, I would say. It is peaceful, somewhere you can enjoy the restaurant and the swimming pool and the views at sundown are amazing.' Officials said a 12-year-old girl died in Petrinja that was hit hardest by the earthquake. At least 20 people were hospitalised with injuries, two with serious ones, they said. 'The centre of Petrinja as it used to be no longer exists,' Croatria's state HRT television said in its report. 'One girl died and there are injuries and people inside collapsed buildings.' The quake was also felt in Zagreb, where people rushed onto the streets, some of which were strewn with broken roof tiles and other debris. Patients and medical staff were evacuated from Zagreb's Sveti Duh Hospital, many left sitting in chairs in the street wrapped in blankets. Croatia's state news agency Hina said in total the quake was felt in 12 countries. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-9096231/Dejan-Lovren-offers-shelter-16-families-hotel-Croatia-earthquake.html Early reports claimed the earthquake caused wide damage, collapsing roofs, building facades and even some entire buildings. The same area was struck by a 5.2 quake on Monday and several smaller aftershocks were felt Tuesday.

  42. Are people still rolling out this flu line? Jeez I'd assumed it didn't need saying at this point but the rolling 5 year average for flu and pneumonia may be higher than that for Covid but 1) we have generations of experience, vaccines and treatments for those things, preventing many deaths, and 2) the Covid numbers are low because of the measures, lockdowns, etc, taken to keep them that way. Should we just forget vaccinations and treatment of flu and pneumonia and see what damage it does?

  43. Just got around to watching this documentary on the discovery plus ➕ app on sky digital. Holy shit, those swedes are a dodgy bunch aren't they........... Not sure whether I should ruin it or not. But there seems plenty of evidence to suggest something untoward happened to that ship. The Swedish government in the first few days they'll do everything in their power to salvage the vessel and bring up the bodies. Then within weeks blatantly refuse to do this claiming it was too deep. Its only 70 metres below the surface. They've never bothered to actually investigate the ship for damage to see what caused the sinking. They sent a British salvage company down to see if it was possible to bring they bodies or ship up, when told it was easy enough to refused. Even though the British drivers got onto the ship and counted over 170 bodies they themselves could have resurfaced there and then. But they weren't allowed. The Swedish government, along with thread Estonian, Finnish and a free other baltic started then signed an agreement to declare the sight of the wreckage a grave site, which then made it illegal to dive there. The Swedish government then dropped 100,000 tonnes of rocks onto the wreckage from a barge, in an attempt to encase the wreckage. The swedes then had an "independent enquiry" into the disaster and the head of the tribunal openly admitted he burned the evidence after drafting up his findings as he thought there was no point in keeping any of the evidence...... Wtf!!! For any of the enquiries they never took statements from shut of the survivors. So when they published their findings, none of the timeliness fit with what the survivors went through. After 20 years the swedes admitted the Swedish military had smuggled Russian military equipment through Estonia and brought it to Sweden via the ferry itself. They admitted to doing it on two sailings a week and two weeks before the sinking, but wouldn't confirm whether they did on the night of the disaster. The list goes on and on. I'm even leaving out the most obvious and clear part of the cover up. But it's a great documentary and certainly one that should be watched.

  44. Fucking awful that, CD. I've been through something similar with one of my best mates who has made a few suicide attempts in the last couple of years. (In truth, they've been fairly half-hearted attempts, but if he tries again his already-damaged internal organs might just decide they can't take any more of his shit.) It messes with your head massively to find yourself simultaneously worried, sympathetic and angry. I hope you've got someone non-judgemental that you can talk to to unburden all your feelings.

  45. You are incredibly stupid, and a self righteous, passive-aggressive bellend to boot. Despite your towering academic accomplishment in getting a degree in Ecology, you've been massively wrong at every stage of this. Your attempts to invoke 'civil liberties' re vaccination are as laughable as your initial assertions about the response to the virus being 'embarrassing' or your weaselling about a second wave. A second wave fully defined by your own chosen criteria, I should add. A definition which you never thought would be met, and yet one which you couldn't being yourself to acknowledge. I genuinely hate you for continually popping up in this thread and spouting your bullshit while people on here and their relatives are suffering. Your reckless behaviour in going abroad, your bitching about wearing a mask while shopping (ffs) and now you're complaining about a fucking vaccination. What's the matter with you?

And here I am thinking I have it tough with two herniated discs in my back and knees which my surgeon described as "fucked". Thankfully I've been able to muddle by through Brexit and the world being riddled with shithouse AIDS while living on about £20 per week, so I am lucky not to have to suffer the way she has.
