  2. It's great news about Razoray, and we've shared a couple of mutual experiences re chemo side effects! He knows that I got the all-clear a couple of weeks ago, as regards the danger of my cancer spreading to the brain. It was weird having that outcome on the back-burner whilst focusing on a certain magnificent sporting event, but such is life. I'm undergoing stem cell transplant soon and have got an operation on Monday for a Hickman Line to be inserted. I only just got rid of the Picc Line in my arm, and now have to get this thing that goes into your chest and neck. The Picc was a pain, initially having to wrap my arm in clingfilm before getting a shower. On one occasion, I waited for my wife to come to the ward and help me (do it for me), only to find out that there was no shower working on the ward, and I would not be allowed to use another ward's shower due to the danger of cross contamination. After 3 days of this I was a bit ripe, in a festival wet-wipes kind of way. Luckily there is a brilliant elasticated arm cover that you can get for £15 (it has definitely been worth buying it) and it arrived a day before the shower was fixed. Being stuck on a ward with everything being done for/ to you made me feel a little infantalised and frustrated, particularly having previously an NHS worker. There is so much time to kill, as the hours drag by. Keeping myself clean, in spite of all the chemo side effects, took on an even newer and greater importance. So, feeling a bit annoyed and pissed off that it will be an even bigger pain to shower with the Hickman than with the Picc, I did some browsing to see what was available to keep the line dry and sterile. There was really only one website selling the bags, so have decided to wait until Monday and see what the medical staff can do in terms of waterproof dressings. Anyway, I came upon this website during the search and immediately felt a little less inconvenienced and sorry for myself: http://wiggly-bags.yolasite.com/ I'm not affiliated with these people in any way, in case anyone is worried. It's just I know how much stress and anxiety this experience has caused my wife, so can only imagine what it might be like for the parents of such young children undergoing such a horrible illness. Cancer really needs to be cunted in the bastard.Despite all the chemo discomfort undergone as a patient, it is horrible to see what friends and family have to go through, as they want to help but are left feeling helpless. But as Razoray has found out, people can amaze you with their kindness.

  7. Good man, Jarv. Great post. After best part of 20 years having the very shower issue you mention above every few months, I’ve now been prescribed the below for free. Revolutionised the whole process of treatment, because I don’t have to wait 2 weeks for a proper shower without loads of fucking about anymore. My happiness was off the scale such that I was tempted to wear the fucker to the shops. Its a matter of time.

  8. I posted on the dark side lately that I was diagnosed with tongue cancer before Christmas. I had surgery where two-thirds of the tongue was removed (replaced with graft from thigh) and had intensive chemo and radiotherapy which finished in March. Lost 3 stone in a rough 6 months but came off the morphine last month and went back to work on reduced hours 4 weeks ago. Work have been extremely supportive and everyone has been so genuinely nice but one colleague blew me away last week. I would deal with this guy intermittently but wouldn't know him that well. He sent me an €100 e-voucher for flights saying that I've had a tough time and will deserve a holiday when better and he just wanted to put something towards it. Some people are class.

  9. Difficult one this because the injury disrupted Joe's season and he only featured sporadically after his return (usually at right back) so he was never able to get back into any kind of groove. It would be unfair to judge him based on that though so instead I’m rating him based on his form pre-injury, which was sensational. His partnership with Big Virg (with Alisson behind them) was almost impregnable and it felt like we only conceded about three goals in the first three months. I know that’s not the case, it’s just how it felt to me. They never even really got to play with Fabinho shielding them either. Joel Matip was brilliant in the second half of the season, but the prospect of Gomez again linking up with Van Dijk, and with Fabinho destroying souls in front of them... well it’s mouth watering. Going into the season I didn’t expect that level of performance from Gomez. I know some probably did, as there have been calls for him to be given a run at centre back for a while. Not from me though. I'll freely admit that I’d have kept Ragnar Klavan (don't really have much of a choice seeing as I wrote it at the time!) as I felt like we were leaving ourselves a little short with just the four centre halves, especially as three of them have a history of missing a lot of games. As it turned out, I was half right as we did end up in a situation where Van Dijk was our only fit centre back and we had to use Fabinho there. That being said, Fabinho was brilliant when we had to cover there, so allowing Ragnar to go was the right call, especially as it gave Gomez his opportunity. I’ve always felt that Gomez looks like someone who could go on to be a superstar, but I didn't see it happening this season. You could see it though. Some players just stand out from the rest, and he did. He just looks smooth. He’s quick, strong, good on the ball and right from the very first game he played (at left back) you could see he had that something about him that great players have. Would I have put as much faith in him this season as Jurgen did? Nope. Two reasons for that. Firstly, the injuries. He’s missed so many games it was difficult to know if he was the same player he was before. Not only that, even if he was the same player he was before, he basically missed two whole seasons of development and gaining experience. So even though he was only 20 going into the season, he was an inexperienced 20 playing a position where experience is one of the main requirements to being successful. Young centre backs make mistakes. It goes with the job. That’s just a fact. It’s such a difficult position for a manager to put his faith in a young player, which is why they are often loaned out. Let them make those mistakes for someone else, or alternatively play them at full back until they've got enough experience to make the switch. You can throw a kid in up front and let him run around and freestyle a bit. If he’s talented, he’ll learn on the job while still making a contribution. You can play them in midfield or full back too, as they have enough players around them to help them out and cover for any mistakes. Centre back is a whole different ball game though. That’s why you rarely see top clubs playing youngsters in that position. Along with goalkeeper, it’s the one position where experience is just as important as talent. Gomez had all the tools and we knew he had massive potential, but I’ll admit, I was worried when we went into the season with Matip and Lovren sidelined, and Gomez as the only option to play alongside Van Dijk. I couldn’t have been more wrong though. Joe was a revelation. The mistakes that you expect from young defenders were nowhere to be seen. In fact, I don’t actually recall any. I’m sure there must have been one or two, but none jump out at me. That’s credit to Gomez but also to Virgil, who must be the easiest player in the world to play alongside as he’s so calm, so dominant and is always talking. Would Gomez have been so accomplished if he’d started the season alongside Lovren or Matip? Doubtful. And I don’t say that to diminish what Joe accomplished. He still has to go out and perform, and he did. Van Dijk makes it easier for the whole team though, which is one of many reasons why he’s the best in the business, Gomez was lighting it up alongside him though and if Virgil was the best in the league you could make a compelling argument that Joe was number two. Of course I’m biased, but who was better than him? Look around the league. Other than Laporte I don’t think there’s anyone who could say they were performing at the same level as Gomez. And then he got injured. He was playing right back that day, which directly contributed to the injury as he wouldn't have in that situation had he been playing in the middle. Klopp blasted the challenge from the Burnley lad but it really wasn't anything out of the ordinary. 99 times out of a 100 Gomez would have just walked away from that unscathed, but Joe doesn't seem to have much luck. The poor lad is cursed isn’t he? Some players are injury prone but Gomez just seems to be incredibly unlucky. It’s not as though he’s constantly picking up muscle injuries like Adam Lallana, or crying off with various different ailments like Dejan Lovren. He’s done his ACL, he’s done ankle ligaments and he’s broken his leg. He’s only 21 and he’s had those three major injuries already. As I say, cursed. Players who continually suffer from muscle injuries are not really any use and need to be moved on. That’s my definition of injury prone. Gomez has been prone to injuries, but is it fair to say he’s ‘injury prone’? I’m uncomfortable using that label on him based on the nature of the injuries he’s had. It also hasn’t helped that it appears his injuries have been mis-diagnosed on more than one occasion. It happened last season and cost him a place in the Champions League final as well as the World Cup (rumour has it that it also contributed to Buvac’s departure, as ‘the Brain’ felt that players were being rushed back from injury before they were ready). It happened again this year and cost him three months of the season. I don’t know if it was avoidable or if there is any blame to be attached to anyone, but two seasons running Gomez picked up an injury that was said to be one thing and turned out to be something different. The initial timescale for his return ended up being doubled in both instances. It cost him a starting place in two Champions League finals. He may or may not have played at right back last year, but were it not for the injury suffered at Burnley he would almost certainly have been lining up at centre back in this year’s final. Hopefully there are more to come though. It’s so tough because any time you lose your place due to a long term injury, it’s going to be heard getting back in when the standard is so high now. Last year he was being rotated with Trent at right back, but his injury opened the door for Trent to play every week and just look at how good he’s become. This year Joe’s misfortune presented an opportunity for Matip, and he was so good that no-one could get the shirt back off him. That’s how it used to be when we were so dominant, and even though football has changed and it’s much more of a squad game these days, Klopp is still operating a policy of if you’re in possession of the shirt and doing well, you’ll keep it except when you need a rest. Matip didn’t play every game in the run in. He was rotated with Lovren, but because he’d played so well he was always brought back in for the big games. Gomez was out of the centre back equation because he missed all that time. At least his versatility meant he still got some minutes filling in for Trent and he got on for a few minutes in the final too which was well deserved. The competition for places is fierce now, especially in midfield and at centre back. Joe deserves better luck next year and if he can stay fit then Klopp really is going to have an embarrassment of riches to choose from. Rating 9 /10. It’s a pre-injury rating. Overall I could have gone lower if I’d factored in the second half of the season, but both Matip and Fabinho were rated on the second half of the season when they played regularly, so applying the same criteria for Gomez how could he be any less than a 9? Best Moment: The goal-line clearance in the Anfield derby, or maybe turning on the after burners and delivering a crunching challenge on Lucas Moura against Spurs at Wembley. Worst Moment: Breaking his leg at Burnley. The future? As long as the injury curse is lifted this lad is going to be an all time great. I’ve got no doubt about that whatsoever. He’s been around for a while already but still has another 12 years in him before his pace starts to go. Fingers crossed, half of those years should be alongside Van Dijk so yeah, I think we’re looking at someone who could go on to be one of the best ever.

  11. These aren't really Tories any more to be fair. You only have to see the reaction of traditional conservatives like Heseltine, Major, Clarke, the likes of Peter Oborne and Hitchens. They're virtually suicidal watching it all. It's like it's a virus that's mutated, like Bird Flu or something. Raegan and Thatcher unleashed it. They took the shackles off everything, made greed good. Decades of saying things in the states like 'government is the problem' led to an outsider who talked of draining swamps taking the reins. Over here it allowed a billionaire and millionaire class to consolidate everything, and the more they hoovered up, the more that took from us all and chipped away at us as a country - our ability to consume, to earn, to build, to live, that in turn impacted their bottom line too, as nobody was able to buy what they were selling. With no 'real' money they gave us debt to spend instead. Housing debt, student debt, unregulated banking debt, until eventually they ate through that too. The state stepped in, they found a way to screw that too, making private debt public and at the same time hoovering up the ruins of what they'd chewed through. People started to notice. They didn't like it. So that anger was repositioned through their media outlets which were also bought and paid for. Blame the poor, the disabled, the foreigners, anyone but them. It didn't work so the gloves came off. Now anything goes. It doesn't even pretend to care about you anymore, it's a savage system that would sell anything to anyone, sell the presidency to the Russians, sell our infrastructure to G4S, anything goes, all that matters is that they stay at the top and you're kept at bay. Trump and Johnson are the final act.

Goes straight into the title race in the my-old-favourites-that-aged-best league, with Northern Exposure still the race favourite (current enjoyment weighted against age). Twin Peaks drops to mid-table, Dead Like Me in a hopeless relegation battle, about to sack the show runner.

  15. Some very valid gripes here , but the one that worries me most is the phone bullying and shaming of mainly elderly people. Was in a job a year or two back where I ended up speaking to an elderly lady who had 12 separate charity dd’s and said she had taken the phone out of the wall on occasions as her name was obviously being passed around. Managed to sort most of the dds out and got her registered for TPS , but this must be happening a lot I would imagine.

  21. The season they were stopped from turning up to win the European Cup they didn't really kick up a fuss and hardly mentioned Heysel. Even after beating them in 2 FA Cup finals they were ok. They started getting horrible around the time Duncan Ferguson was there because we went about 3 years with our beating them. But it was more of a "ha ha you lot are shite and can't beat us" rather than anything about Heysel.

  22. Those Evertonians around then knew the score, Heysel could’ve arguably happened to any English team with a “firm” in Europe. We were no angels but were nowhere near the level of some of the hoolies around then, and we’d been in Europe twenty odd years with no major incidents attributable to us, whereas Leeds, United, Chelsea and, yes, Everton and others, had previous for smashing up ferries and the like. Obviously the brakes were put on after Heysel and following the Taylor report, seating came in and there was focus on removing hooliganism from our game. Since then many have regarded us as the culprits that brought English football shame and Bloos in particular as the catalyst to their subsequent failure, disregarding the fact that others have got on with things since, as it’s much easier for the newer generations to blame us than face the truth that they’ve done next to fuck all to keep up.

  23. Boca Juniors - Riquelme. Dundee - Good friend of my grandad played for them. Hibs - One of the other teachers on the "internship" was a Hibs fan. He also stayed in the city after the internship finished. Became good mates. Arsenal/Tottenham - Simply can't split them. I have no strong emotions about either side. Newcastle - Rafa Benitez. Actually I liked them before that. I like the city as well. Fenerbahce - Dirk. Not really arsed about Turkish football though. Find the attempts at simply having the highest decibel level, etc, utterly tedious. Tuneless shite. Borussia Dortmund - A great football club. Sampdoria - They were my Italian team when Football Italia was on telly. Lombardo, Vialli, etc. In fact they were probably just about on the slide by about the mid 90s, they won stuff in the late 80s and early 90s. Been to the derby, probably about ten years ago, and I reckon it's the best derby in Italy. AC Milan - No strong opinions either way with Inter and AC Milan. Mourinho managed to sour any positive thoughts I had towards Inter as a club, so I'll go with AC Milan simply for the utter brilliance of those 90s teams. That team on Fifa 98, my word. Roma - Mate of mine has a house in central Italy, and I used to go there every year for a week or two. Fucking incredible part of the world. Two of the lads in the town, one supported Roma and was a fascist, the other supported Lazio and was a communist. They didn't choose the easy life. Made up that Lucas won the cup with Lazio last season, can't be liking that club though. Fucking hell, they're a deeply unpleasant fan base in general. So, I'll go Roma. Athletic Bilbao - Quite like both of the Basque clubs. Aldo at Real, and San Sebastian is a phenomenal city. On the flip side, David Moyes. Going to have to go with Athletic Bilbao though. With their recruitment policy (admittedly increasingly less strict) to have never been relegated. The San Mames (old one) was a great stadium as well. Real Betis - Not close this. Got good mates who support Sevilla, but they're a shite club. Atmosphere at the ground is generally awful (been there for games against local rivals, Malaga for example, not a peep for 90 minutes). People say the rich support Sevilla, and generally have no idea about football. The people support Betis. It's largely true. Betis is a great club, and Joaquin is fucking ace. I'm biased, but this is the best derby in Spain by a million miles. The whole city, and surrounding towns, goes in to melt down for a good week before the game. Feyenoord - Dirk. Hattrick to win the title. What a guy. Benfica/Sporting Lisbon - Not arsed about Portuguese football at all. Olympiakos/Panathinaikos - Or Greek football.

It was absolutely hilarious listening to all the right wingers tying themselves in knots trying to excuse Johnson and make out that the story was the neighbours reporting his domestic to the police and The Guardian. They were also making complete fools of themselves over that Mark Field assaulting that climate protester. Apparently she could have had a bomb in her tiny handbag. 29. I remember as a kid standing in Birkenhead on a cold wet Saturday all day collecting for poppy day. A mild shake of the tin and people throwing a few pence in, no forced begging. But we got fuck all for doing it except the knowledge it was for charidee. If there's a job where people have to accost you in the street and use charidee to guilt you into paying them a cut then that isn't a job, nor is that charidee. That's a charity using guilt to force the public to throw cash at it. Some charities do marvellous work, it's a shame that many exist to exist and looking at their head offices, their pay to their top executives it's not hard to see why they need to exist. Helping their cause seems to be a means of getting tax free cash for that pays for that exclusive London address. And yes I've been to such places so they do exist. A friend of mine who gained more medals than Mutley while serving 24 years in the military, got some percentage bonus for each and every time he was posted to a war zone, and he had racked up one hell of a lot of those detachments. Feeling guilty after his most recent one he phoned one of those numbers on the advert for a charity to make a donation. Unfortunately, this seemed to put him on a list, he was bombarded with texts, phone calls and letters. His generous act only seemed to be like blood in the water and his information shared as they all honed in looking for blood. Again, I do give to charity and I do know that a lot of charities do excellent work and do not use questionable tactics to gain donations. Until more is done to stop those that use those tactics then the good charities will suffer.

  34. Just lost a friend to this over the weekend. He was 31, started in his sinuses/inner ear, and they had apparently got it down to smaller than a pea then it came back, and spread. His liver got the worst of it this time around and he succumbed to it. A few months back I lost my aunt, she had colon cancer, beat it, was clean and free about 1.5 - 2 years, and then had a small recurrence in her lungs. I think with her it was ultimately the treatment that killed her and it seemed to be that they got the cancer this most recent time but she developed Pneumonia and couldn't shake it as her immune system was so fucked from the recent radiation and chemo. She was 74 so it was a bit easier to deal with but quite honestly it's still shit all the same. One of the hardest parts with her has been my grandmother, 98 years old and had to cremate her daughter because of this shit. I don't very much like posting this kind of thing on here but reading the other replies I thought I'd add my own. I wish everyone affected by this disease whether it be directly or through the loss of a friend/loved one all the best.
